Colorado

Took some more photos yesterday, these are of the 4 older RIR chicks. These hatched 3/29 and 3/30, and I think I have a cockerel and 3 pullets in this group. The one I'm pretty sure is a cockerel hatched from a Ron Fogle egg, and the 3 I think are pullets hatched from Greathorse (Paul) eggs, for those who follow the Heritage Rhode Island Red thread. Paul is here in CO. I just went to visit him this past Saturday and picked up more RIR eggs along with a dozen SLW eggs. His place and his birds are gorgeous, and he is a treat.

These first two shots I refer to as "Sky" shots and show the width of back. These are young birds so I expect more filling out, but if you notice the one in the middle of the three all together in this first picture, that is the one I believe is a cockerel, his back is the same width from shoulders to tail. That is very desirable.

In the third pic the cockerel is the one to the right

Here he is out front

Here the cockerel is the one to the left, the one on the right is one of the Greathorse chicks

Greathorse chicks in the front, cockerel all the way in the back, can just see his head

Cockerel out front again

Cockerel on the left and Greathorse chick to the right

I was just reminded that I haven't posted the chicken plucker info that we talked about during chickenfest.

I got my parts from http://dux-industries.com/.

As I wanted only the drum assembly, and it wasn't specifically listed on the website, I called and made arrangements over the phone. Great people to work with, and got a good price. The parts were shipped out very quickly.

Oh ya, and they sell their tabletop models on eBay.....

DH works in southern tech center, his boss gave him a raise to keep him close to work so our options have become limited.  :(

if aurora is close enough to make the boss happy, then elizabeth probably is too. the traffic from aurora to dtc is horrid, so time wise, it will probably take long to get to the dtc from aurora than it would from elizabeth or franktown.

thanks all - I've been building this since December, and what with weather and work it's been slow. I only had room to build it on the deck, so I was at the mercy of the elements.

So. I need some advise. Have a broody. I don't really need any more laying hens. I am maxed out after I trade a couple birds with Mayah.
I really, really wanted some bantams and it looks like the Urch order isn't happening.

so my bantams from him aren't coming...I am pretty sure.
So, here is my questions. I can get some hatchery bantams from Privett hatchery, can I give some day old bantams to my broody? She is a Welsummer. She raised out some Easter eggers in February. I know Pozees said that she and Mayah both had bantams squished by standard broody hens.
Is this a bad idea to try with a proven broody mom?
So sorry to hear about the Urch order. If your broody has already proven herself you should be good. I've had big hens hatch a huge clutch of bantams eggs and had awesome sucess. If adding the chicks to her just be sure she accepts them and they accept her. Believe it or not sometimes they won't accept the hen. My broodies are good and there is a significant difference when they are sitting on eggs or keepingchicks warm. So like I said just watch them and make sure they are taking to each other. Oh, it also helps that the chicks haven't learned to eat on their own too. It makes for a smoother transition.

Last picture.
Those look like red stars to me and they all look like pullets to me as well.

Wendell, so disappointed at your lack of hatch. Keeping fingers crossed for the next one.
Wendell, what are we going to do with him. How many hens do you have with him? I'm starting to wonder about him.
