Another question for everyone...I have a year old Buff Orpington, Ginger, that has always laid a nice big egg about every other day. Lately she has been randomly laying an egg in the pen/coop/run and then goes into the nest box and lays another egg that is soft and usually broken. They have free choice oyster shell and she was eating all flock but is now back on layer feed. Anyone know what could be causing this? It has been going on for about a month. It began one day when she laid an egg in their run at about 8 pm. She acts normal, she is a very vocal girl but has not been vocal after laying the first egg but is after the second. It is almost like she has no idea she laid the first one. What is going on with Ginger?

It sounds as if her hormones are out of balance, causing her reproductive system to overproduce, but incompletely in the second instance. I'm not sure how to fix it, I usually start trying fallback things like high protein treats, plain yogurt, fresh vegetables, ACV in the water if you don't do that already, electrolytes in the water, etc. - but I can't say any of those things would fix the problem. Has her comb/wattle color paled?

As an addendum, I have sent Mr Abbots a message on FB advising him to be up front and open about his intensions regarding 'adopted" chickens via the Colorado Chickens FB group.

Just catching up (working WAY too many hours lately) and had some thoughts:

1.) Newbies - I am a newbie. I know that I have felt "dissed" in several forums because I had a question or comment and it seemed everyone on that forum was so wrapped up in the already ongoing stories that no one replied or it was a quick "welcome aboard" but not an answer to my question. Just my 2 cents worth.

2.) Ducks - they need to be able to keep their feet wet most of the time to prevent bumblefoot or at least have a very soft surface (super tough in Colorado) and they have to have water deep enough to put their entire head in it. They get eye problems if their eyes don't get submerged on a regular basis.

3.) Broody hens - anyone who is "done" with chicks for the season is making me cry, my one and only broody hen never gets serious about it until July...

4.) Goats - they are great fun but the intact males do have an odor, and life is much easier if they don't have horns. They can turn a bramble patch into a beautiful lawn - even the pigmy goats (and many of those produce great cashmere, or is it mohair/angora, can't remember which one is the soft undercoat).

5.) krcchickens - that sounds just like my flock!

6.) Please tell me the potential hoarder guy is not in Aurora!

We borrowed a commercial sized incubator from a neighbor who raises game birds for the shooting clubs around here. It overheated and cooked 48 babies. In the meantime, our broody hen had hid away 2 eggs and presented us with a pullet and a cockerel who are both still here. Decided the best deal was to let her handle it

That would be cool. Since this winter is going to be a nasty one, I'm sure, I've been looking all over for a heated auto-waterer for the new coop. It appears no such thing exists.

You need to invent one. Make one for me, too, while you're at it, please!

Did tons of chores here today, in between the rain that is, it was nice having the rain the first day, but it sure is getting old fast! I know we need it, but why can't it rain in the middle of the night!

Kiowa feed had Flax seed at one time, not sure if it is organic though......

P funk, Why do you say it will be a nasty winter? Just curious! LOL You could modify that roof fairly easy, just make it higher towards the middle of the run area, and put a gutter on the outside of the house area, just my two cents worth!!!!!

I don;t do FB, so have no idea who this man is asking for animals, but everyone who is rehoming an animal should at least do a farm visit, will give you peace of mind. You can also do a contract that if they end up having to rehome the animal, it comes back to you, or you at least have first right of refusal. Is a simple contract, and yes, it is binding once they sign it. You can find examples on line, just google animal sales contracts, or ask a good rescue in your area what they use.

I know there were other posts, but my mind just went blank!

This winter will be the worst on record because this summer will as well. My brother lives in Phoenix and it's like 120 there. Death Valley should hit almost 140.
