Wendell - we used a rope and pulley system for our BBBs. None of us were strong enough to get a wet bird out of the scald water without major injury or burns. They are very heavy!!!!!
Just a FYI.

Yup, we're ready for it. My older kids will be there, as well asa couple of their friends who want to learn how it's done. Nothing like free labor! LOL

Wow Wendall, those are some big turkeys! You did turkey's last year as well, right? How were they in comparison to store bought, butterball or whatever brand? I've been thinking about doing two or three turkeys, but wondering if it's worth it, I hear they eat a lot.

We did. Personal opinion only: I would take a home raised turkey over a store bought turkey any day. The Narragansett that we ate last year was more tender and with better flavor. Juicier and with WAY more dark meat that a broad breasted. BUT, we always try to buy a couple of the cheap on sale turkeys every year to freeze and eat later through the year. As we start getting our own Narragansetts in their own run, we should be able to keep a few on hand for eating as needed.

That all being said, the two Bronze Broad Breasted that are so huge are now eatting about 5-6 pounds of 20% pellets EACH EVERY DAY! The Narragansetts don't eat nearly as much. BUT, I am getting $3 per pound dressed weight for the two BBBs. From what I hear, $3 per pound is pretty cheap for what you are getting.( nice fresh, never frozen, babied spoiled farm raised turkeys...) If I were living closer to Denver and raised alot of them and could market them more, I think I could get close to $5 per pound. If they dress out at about 35 pounds each, that brings in $210. That is just over breaking even. The Narragansetts don't get as big or grow as fast, but don't eat as much either. Christy Godsey raises Royal Palm turkeys I think and she raises lots of them.

Wow, that is a lot of food! I guess if you could get top dollar it would be worth it. I drive Marksheffel FREQUENTLY, and there is a house at Fontaine and Marksheffel that has, at least, twenty turkeys foraging in the front yard. I'm guessing they sell them, because why the heck else would they have that many?
I guess I'd have to pick the right breed, because I really do not need a 35lb turkey.

LOL I was thinking the same thing, when I buy a turkey I try to get one 10-12 lbs :) I am hoping to try the White Midgets next year, they seem more my size.

I haven't posted in a while, been busy with school. Tonight we had our first predator attack. We are pretty sure it was a fox, broke the necks of both of my EEs

. Totally my fault, I hadn't locked up their run when it got dark. Luckily my DH heard the ruckus and went out, saved my Buff Brahma, she is missing all the feathers on one foot now. Otherwise everyone else is ok. I am really sad about both of them but especially Luna. We have an elderly couple that lives next door and she frequently flew over the fence (it is only 3') and would tour their yard. They loved her and looked for her every day. At one point I felt bad that she was in their yard and put up a reed fence, their daughter told me how much they missed seeing the "white chicken." I feel really bad, I will have to break the news to them this weekend.
Does everyone agree that a fox would do this? No bite marks, just broken necks. I live in the city and I think food is getting scarce for it. It is a black fox with a white tail, very unusual looking in the city. I know it has visited in the winter because I find very large paw prints in the snow on the nest boxes.
