Colorado

I'm seriously looking at one of my ayam cemani roos that has had the crow reduction surgery (he's about 15% as loud as his daddy was... and his daddy was LOUD) as a candidate for freezer camp tonight unless someone wants to buy him for $150 (cost of the surgery). He is from Mike Bean's non Smithsonian line. I have ayam cemani pullets too.

I had 23 roos earlier this fall... these are the last (favorites) left. This was inevitable.

The ac line I have atm throws out 10% all black saturated babies.. a lot of culling would need to be done, but they are surprisingly heavy birds. Boss the ac roo I'm trying to rehome easily weighs 6 lb or more and was hatched late August

Otherwise he is in grave danger of becoming magical healing Korean ginsing soup in his very near future. I'm so sick and desperate... it's my next resort.
That would be some very expensive soup!!! Maybe you could pair him with a pullet, and then co-own them with someone responsible to get some chicks or hatching eggs back. That way he is not crowing at your house, and you still will get offspring from him...... just a thought!

I read that article, about the flu shot this year being for the wrong flu. Apparently the strain "drifted" and a different one became the main one. I was a little upset about that, I hate getting sick and have gotten the flu shot the last 8 years...the article came out a week after I got vaccinated. One of my daughters has already gotten the stomach flu, the rest of us lucked out and had no issues.
Been making fudge all day, 9 lbs done, 6 to go. This is way more work than someone who can't eat it, should put into it, but everyone LOVES fudge.
I'm pretty irritated my chickens aren't laying yet, even though they all seem to be done molting. None of the older Cochins, or legbars have started back up. I'm feeding a bunch of free loaders.

We just culled a couple older hens, and I'm wondering if my Cochins are over the hill as well, but there's really no excuse for the Legbars not to be laying. I'm getting just one egg a day, from one of the legbar mixes.
The fudge is awesome, but I get sugar induced migraines, so tiny tastes to make sure it's not grainy is all I get and that tends to be too much as well. I made chocolate covered cherries last week, like the yummy store bought ones, and had four of them, which ruined my whole next day...now just thinking of eating one makes me nauseated. Lol. They took all day to make, and I just had to try them. My "genius" doctor said, then don't have sugar...I almost called him a name after that stupid comment.

Just give them til early Jan. You should start getting eggs again after the lengthening daylight triggers them on. I don't call mine freeloaders, I just tell them they get to make a choice, the breakfast table or the dinner table. Seems to work great!

I love fudge. I've never made it though. I keep meaning to try but my time keeps getting full from other projects (like 7 puppies running around!).
I couldn't live without sugar. Is it just sweets or does sugar in any recipe, like banana bread, bother you?

Our girls are free loaders too and I'm so tired of it. 1 egg yesterday does not make up for the couple months of nothing, but it's a start. Hoping everyone else catches on. I don't even know who laid it. It's a pretty dark brown but hopefully it wasn't my BCM since I'd like darker from her. I have a feeling it was my BA. Her eggs are about that color and she is done molting.

I'm hoping it's the limited daylight that's causing the slow down.
All sugar, 90% of the time. There are times that I don't have a full blown migraine, just a headache, but Tylenol won't take care of it. The prescribed medication knocks me out for a couple hours, so I can't take it during the day.
I make the Fantasy Fudge, with the Marshmallow fluff...very easy, and yummy, and all kinds of flavor variations.

Can someone help me find a local breeder?  I am in the Colorado Springs area and can go as far as Denver/Boulder.  I am hoping to get some chicks (pullets) in the next few weeks.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!
I am in Centennial, CO and am looking for bantam Orphingtons and other super friendly breeds to buy as chicks this spring. I really don't want to order online because I only want to start out with two chicks and see how it goes. Friendliness is most important, followed by egg production. This will be my first time raising chickens. Please let me know if you find any promising breeders I'm Co! I'll drive anywhere if it means getting healthy chicks!

There are quite a few breeders in CO but I'm not sure about bantam Orpingtons. You should really consider starting with 4 chickens. They are flock animals and do better with more numbers.
I plan to breed some bantams (frizzles and silkie/EE crosses) in the spring. I'll be posting on BYC when they are ready.

I think someone on here has posted some, but can't recall who, has been a while though...... they were Chocolate Orpintons (I think) if you want to do a search. Yep, agree you should get at least four or five, that way they will stay warm enough in the coop in winter. I have Bantam Cochins if you are interested.

eta, Welcome to the Colorado thread!!!

Anyone near Pueblo have any young buff orpington or silkie hens? Im looking to add two more to my very small flock. If you want to call it that.

I just recently had four youngsters, three were for sure roos which found homes. Kept the only hen I thought I had, which was the smallest and kindest out of the flock. Yesterday, I brought home two beautiful and sweet hens for her... or so I had thought "her". "She" started crowing and when I was able to see them close together, after introducing them, my heart sank. I swear "she" developed a comb overnight.

How "lucky" was I getting four silkie roos from the same clutch?

It seems like there has been something up with everyone's pullets and hens this fall in terms of laying. I have 8 month old pullets going through a full molt and every last pullet from this year quit when we had that cold blast last month. I've gotten 4 eggs this past week from the pullets. I stockpiled eggs in October and just ran out. Good timing. They need to pick up the pace.

Oh you made fudge for the whole board? ;) love fudge, I have suffered from migraines all my life, so I can empathize with your situation. I try to avoid sugar as much as possible as well and I use other alternative sweeteners, raw honey, brown rice syrup and coconut nectar syrup. Are you willing to share the migraine med your on? I ask because the only one that I have found that works for me is Frova. However my insurance now will not cover it and there is no way I can afford the $400 price tag for 9 migraine pills for a month. I used to blow through the pack by mid month, but lately have had a reduction of migraines. I consider it age and just a complete change of eating habits.

Sugar for me is my nemesis, I love it and once I have it then I crave it. After stopping all processed foods and sugar, the craving goes away after about a week.

Hi Lacey and welcome to the Colorado thread. We will be hatching babies this spring from the following mating with our Buff Orphington roos - Easter Eggers, Barred Rock, Delaware, Dark Cornish, Rhode Island Reds and Welsummer's. We have a friendly flock, been raise since chicks together, the friendliest of our flock are the EE, BR and Delawares. Our roo's are friendly, they have been handled a lot and aren't agressive at all. Never had a single issue with the roosters, they have always been complete gentleman. Now they won't be purebred birds, just a barnyard mixed flock, you are more than welcome to buy some eggs or chicks from us. Our flock was immunized at the Hatchery against Marek's and have been healthy since day one.

Hi and welcome to the Colorado thread.

Agreed, something has been up with our flock. They have been looking ragged and their coats have lacked sheen. I believe we had some soft molting in our 8 month old girls, I added FORCO (priobiotic supplement) to their feed this week and noticed this am how shiny and soft their feathers look and feel. We have been averaging 19-20 eggs a day from 23 hens. We have three broody girls so I am pretty sure they are not laying, but not 100% on that. Yesterday we got 14/23, so not sure if they are slowing because of the upcoming solstice and longer days or just a rest day after having a day when they laid 20/23.
