I sent an e-mail to a bunch of Denver politicos in support of having food producing animals (FPA) in Denver city limits. A push is being made for 8 chickens and 2 miniature goats (all girls). Baby goats temporarily allowed until weaned (I think). The focus is to provide fresh safe food for people who need it, especially those on a lower income. I even mentioned that quail are great in apartments, and that schools could easily have a small flock of chickens, thus not only providing fresh eggs but also helping children understand where some food goes to AND a way to get rid of edible trash. Here's a response I got today:

Thank you for writing in support of Denver ’s food producing animals ordinance. A public hearing will be held on the proposed ordinance on June 13th, 2011 starting at approximately 6pm. I will make sure that Councilwoman Boigon is aware of your support.

Just thought BYCers/Denverites might want to also write letters or attend the meeting. This is the only info I have on the meeting but I'm sure a google search will turn up the place.

Thanks for the info. I live in Lakewood but I would like to have a mini goat do they get along with dogs ?

Pat: We don't have dogs so I can't say 100% but I have chickens in with my 4 nigerian dwarf goats, and from time to time I see chickens "roosting" on my wether! They do play "chase" sometimes. Our buck tries to headbutt the chickens but he's just playing.

One of our neighbors has large labs, slightly bigger than our biggest goat. THEY don't get along but that's probably because the dogs sneak over and bare their teeth at all of our critters. My goaties know when someone is threatening or friendly. Very smart.

MyKidLuvsGreenEgz and ghillie these are for you!!!

He doesn't seem to mind me being in the coop. He will actually walk really close to me but won't let me touch him yet!! He may never get there but I will keep trying. I do have to say also that he is much bigger than he looked in that kennel!!! Once I let him out it was like he grew instantly. My husband was amazed at how big he is!!!
