It sounds like she has been put through the ringer, I really hope the worst is past and they send Beth home next week. Sounds like she is holding up though, that's one tough cookie you have there. You will have to cook her some of those new eggs when you get her home.

Candled this first egg and it doesn't look like it has a yolk. Too funny.

Tell your girls 'This is for momma!' and I am sure they will start giving you yokes.

Actually Wendell, you're making me think. First egg I got this morning was very small. Went in to compare it with yesterday's and one of yesterdays was very small too. It's a very dark brown egg (compared to all my others except the Wellies) about the size of the one you posted. I wonder if #39 has made her breakthrough. Going back to your pic to look at the color.

ETA: Nope, it's much darker than yours looks............sigh.

Hi everyone! I haven't been able to catch up on everything, was out on the west coast for a week for a wedding and vacation and when I got back my car broke down! The last few weeks have been interesting to say the least. I'm getting a new car tomorrow (gotta clean out my soon-to-be-old car tonight) but the only part you might be interested in...

MY WELSUMMER STARTED LAYING!!! :weee :clap :celebrate :yesss:

Hers are very dark brown with darker brown speckles, and we knew it was a new girl because they were all in and out of the coop all day on Saturday. It's funny how they all go into the coop to watch. One light brown from the cochin in the morning, then a dark brown one in the afternoon! They are almost as big as the cochin's even though she has been pumping them out for a month now.

They are beautiful :love

The rest of the girls are really hormonal so I suspect they will start soon too. Always crying, flapping around, squabbling over treats. Now that these two have started laying they are pretty relaxed compared to the young'uns. It will be nice to have a sweet calm flock again.

Is everyone enjoying this lovely fall weather? Wendell, I'm glad to hear Beth has turned a corner. Mo, I recommend Biaggi's or Silver Pond. Minchi, I'd love to do a canning class!

I still have a month until mine start laying, probably best since they are still in there temporary coop. I am almost done with there real coop, I swear. Just got to paint some more, cut a few more boards screw them together and insulate, and put the roofing tiles on. I also need to level the ground... It will be nice and cozy once it is done and have a mini porch for them since they seam to like the deck so much. There is a chance I might move so the coop is designed to be taken apart and moved.

Canning would be great, there is so much to learn.

Congrats, Jenelle! It's so danged eggciting, isn't it??

You're right Minchi...canning is awesome, and it's as addicting as chickens are! I'm just finishing the apples I had on hand now...chatting between processings. I'm hoping to scrounge more though...all I've got now are a couple batches of applesauce (1 of cinnamon and one of caramel vanilla) and a big batch of "regular" apple butter and am trying a small one of caramel vanilla. Went today and picked up some fingerling potatoes and am gonna try them this week...I've never done potatoes before, but I'd like to have pints of them and veggies and meat so we can have 3-can heat'n eat meals, LOL Got some nice sweet potatoes as well, so I need to check into how to can them. What fun!

Okay last post, for the day... I have to get some work done.

I started a thread on the idea of getting together sometime to learn how to cook/can from some of the other members. I have an idea for a neutral location that we could use. If you want to consider this or want to join in please respond to this thread and give me some feedback. Thanks!

Just let me know when and you guys can come over here. I have everything here that you guys would need. It is too much work to drag everything out when so much can be done in the span of a couple of hours here. I usually always go through canning of beans, meats, homemade laundry soap, no knead bread, yoghurt if there is a desire or kefir, I can show people what vinegar mothers look like, how to do your own vanilla extract... cold process soap, candles, body butters, lip moisturizer, etc. I just have to know what people want to learn and I can show. Get a sock loom and I'll go through the steps to make socks. I guess what I'm saying is you all can come here.
