My first computer was a Windows XP laptop, and that thing definitely taught me patience, rational thinking, and hoarding all in one package. That's when I think it's fine for a child to have a computer, when the child is much older and can benefit from knowing how to use such a device.

Oooo trackpoints. I do not like those. I have a Fujitsu tablet PC with one of those. It was really painful to use.My first laptop was a lenovo ThinkPad, it was about 3 inches thick and a sophisticated method of moving the cursor that looked like a pencil eraser, right in the middle of the key board.
Playing Carmen Sandiego was a real treat with that thing. And it had built in games that I can still hear the music for.
