My first computer was a Windows XP laptop, and that thing definitely taught me patience, rational thinking, and hoarding all in one package. That's when I think it's fine for a child to have a computer, when the child is much older and can benefit from knowing how to use such a device.

Course, I can't say much about screens but we didn't even get cable until 2005 ish? It was local broadcast and PBS. And library/video store tapes.

If you know what you're doing you can get rid of them for a bit.

Though it seems someone once took it upon themselves to fill the "notes" feature on one with potty stuff. Um.... Yah.

Absolutely. Windows xp taught us all patience. older is definitely better.

My first laptop was a lenovo ThinkPad, it was about 3 inches thick and a sophisticated method of moving the cursor that looked like a pencil eraser, right in the middle of the key board.
Playing Carmen Sandiego was a real treat with that thing. And it had built in games that I can still hear the music for.

I was given all of the old PCs Dad was going to toss. It turns out that it really was a good learning experience. I still use that practical knowledge I learned with them to this day.

Oooo trackpoints. I do not like those. I have a Fujitsu tablet PC with one of those. It was really painful to use.

And the VAIO mini PC my Uncle sent over with one of those. It was super slow and had bad ergonomics to top it all off. Dad really liked it though.
