Comb questions

Curious, so I looked it up.

If your girl is a true Polish, she will have a duplex comb ("V" comb).

The duplex comb of the Polish will do wild and wonky things.

With the single comb rooster, you could get 2 duplex single combs, so a "crown"

If you bred her with a pea comb rooster (which you don't have), you'd get virtually no comb at all.

If you breed her with the mixed rose comb rooster, you'll get 50% single type mix, so those crowns, and 50% modified rose comb duplex.

That's assuming she is DvDv...math changes if she is only single for duplex.

Duplex is only partially dominant, so it modifies but doesn't dominate.

Fascinating.

Hmmmm

I know I've petted her top knot down enough to find her comb. I didn't want to hurt her when I gave her a hair cut so she could stop attacking the air when someone ran past her. I know its small but i have no idea what shape. I want to say it looked kinda like a pea comb. If it wasn't "freeze you solid" cold out side i would go wake her up to see. Oh well tomorrow is another adventure.

Cool. I know my 2 roos were backyard mix. They were advertised as "free alarm clocks." LOL. Their roo (grandpa) was a SLW. I don't know how pure he was.

My first hatching (aka fine you broody piece of ****) I had 2 hatch out if six eggs. I wasn't set up for chicks and neither are still alive but I had a EE hatch with a pea comb and a little yellow fluffy with a standard comb.

Here are pics of my roos.

Btw... What colors are you working with for hens...that will help too.

LofMc

My hens are 6 Buff Orpington (some of those are sporting the wavy combs), 4 RIR, 1 Polish (I know I have at least 2 of her eggs because I watched them drop still wet), 2 EE (Wheaten pea comb), 3 Plymouth Rock (2 white, 1 barred), 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte, 1 Speckled Sussex, 3 dark Brahma (they are still pullets but I know at least one is laying. The roo started dancing and mating her about 3 weeks ago and I've seen one of them poking around the nests.)
