Hello,
A quick question....

Are the hens combs fully formed by the time they start laying? Mine are 15 weeks and the hens combs still seem very small. I have noticed their ear flesh has gotten bigger & redder.

I have Barred Rocks.

Thanks,
Laurie

some breeds just have small combs. My amaracauna has just a nub of a comb

but she lays pretty blue eggs every day!

Around 17 weeks two of my pullets' combs, my Hyline and my Barred Rock, seemed to grow over night. The Hyline then started laying at 19 weeks after the comb turned bright red. I am still waiting on the other to lay, the Barred Rock.

I bought 8- 6 were "guaranteed" to be pullet. We found out my 2 rir are roos. the other 4 are red sex links. they are 15 weeks. I went to feed last night, and noticed 1 of the red sex links comb had grown over night. I was way worried I had another roo. I'm glad to hear she is just getting ready to lay. We have 4 out of 8 that are roos. I'm praying everyone will get along together. We don't won't to get rid of any.

Thanks y'all.

I will keep an eye on their combs, and hubby will be building the nesting boxes this weekend.

I hope they lay sooner rather than later.

My barred rock is 19 weeks and still not laying. Her comb and wattles have grown a lot recently though. And she's noisy as hell. In fact my mom and my neighbor are terrified of her because of all the noise she makes. Funny thing is she's 2nd to last in pecking order.

My RIR's comb is very red and jiggly and her earlobes have grown. she sure is making a darn ruccus every morning at sunrise... got me scared she might be a he! Her body seems to tall and lean for a hen and her tail is black... PLEEEAASE lay an egg!!!

I have noticed ONE of my seven hens' comb is getting bigger. Yipee! Hubby finished the nesting boxes (boy they are big & take up a lot of space, oh well).
