Come On AC we want some eggs!

Fast approaching 36 weeks without an egg in sight. I did some research today on the Ancona breed. They are apparently prolific layers who generally begin laying around 5 months of age. Well someone forgot to tell AC that as she's almost 9 months old. On the positive side, if she ever does lay an egg, then she will get to lay longer since she started later. Right?

Happy 36 week birthday AC, today was my DD Chayla's birthday too. She turned 9yo. Fortunately for her, her job isn't to lay an egg. Unfortunately for you, your job is to lay an egg. That's pretty much your only job.

When will you do that? How much longer will you make me wait? I'm growing tired of looking at your butt side and guessing if you are close to laying. Watching carefully to see if it's an egg you are dropping or just another enormous poop.

I must respectfully request you begin laying by your 1 year birthday or we will be forced to consider an alternative plan for you. I know that's not what I want and that's not what you want to hear, but I simply cannot keep a hen that doesn't lay. It's just not practical. Or so my DH has informed me.

So PLEASE lay me an egg. I don't want to loose you. :/

Might try telling her your beginning to think shes a rooster. Ask her to prove it. Then remind her that roosters usually get shipped out from there.

Haha! That sounds like a plan. However she won't respond to such an obvious ploy. As a matter of fact I believe she is now laughing at my threats. Guess she knows I'm all talk.

AC turns 40 weeks old tomorrow - and still no eggs from her. I vascilate between being disappointed and okay with it. I want her to lay so badly that every time she stops and pushes I watch and hope it's an egg coming out. Nope just another blob of poo.

But here is something encouraging, yesterday while I was cleaning the inside of the coop - AC came in. She walked to the corner by the door and squatted down like she saw the rooster do months ago when he would show her where to lay. She didn't stay too long - but still - that's something right!

Then this morning when I went out to clean I found a softshelled egg in the manure box. It was located on the right side - under where I saw AC sitting last night at dark. But I thought it couldn't be hers as it was big enough to be about medium size - too big for a pullet's first egg. However when I opened it up to cook it for the chicks - I found it was a double yolker! So now I'm thinking - maybe it could be the right size for her first try at an egg - and it being softshelled would make sense for her since she's not been laying like all the others.

I'm so hoping that it was AC's first egg and not just a defective one from one of my other layers. I guess time will tell - like if she lays another egg in the next several days.

AC turned 41 weeks old today. She still has not laid an egg. The double yolker I found must have been from my White Leghorn who was temporarily having laying issues - probably due to molting. I'm so bummed for her. She is so sweet and playful - I would hate to have to say goodbye to her. I plan to wait it out to her 1 year birthday and if she's still not laying by that date - well, we may have to decide another fate for her. :(
