Community service

Still don't know what it really is. Never heard of that, not that I can recall. I have an issue with required community service, but anyhow, carry on. Just had no idea what IB was, LOL. BUT, if I was going to do volunteer work, a nursing home would be a great place to go. They love young folks to visit usually.

Yeah, that seems to be the general opinion. I'll see if I can find some nursing homes around my area. There actually aren't that many, most of the old folk seem to live in estates, there are several in my suburb.

IB doesn't only require community service, there's also 50 hours of creativity and 50 hours of sport, which I'm also going to struggle with seeing as I've been avoiding sport for as long as I can remember.

ray's two cents :

Hmm, working with disabled kids sounds like it might be cool. Pipe cleaner spiders too.

I'm not really a chatter, despite what my post count might indicate, so I don't know how much good I'd be to the old folks. I tend to go all quiet when I'm talking to people I don't really know.

(Although if they just need a listening ear, that's a whole other story...

I worked in Animal rehabilitation and with the local Indian Education groups as a kid.

You can also volunteer at the hospital or the local animal shelter. There is often a need of people to just visit with the sick who have no family.

There are also other groups like the salvation army, meals on wheels, and hotlines in need of volunteer counselors.

If you are interesting in animal rehab, most ares have a local rescue group, zoo, shelter, or other such things that are in need of people to just come and "socialize" with domestic animals, or help tend to sick or injured animals,c lean cages, groom, feed and so on.

The local rehabbers found out that I had the patience to raise mammals, and started sending me orphaned babies. That was a pain but I did it.

That is a good education for teaching teenagers about teen pregnancy when you have to get up every hour to feed a hungry baby then find someone to watch it and go to school the next day. And forget trying to get homework done , be apart of after school activities and hang out with friends when you have something young and delicate in need of constant care.

There's so much you can do!
I work at a National Wildlife Refuge two weekends a month and every Wednesday evening at a local non-profit ranch where they provide equine physical therapy to children with disabilities. If you keep your eyes open, opportunities are sure to pop out at you! Don't scratch one off your list just because the description doesn't glow at first; give it a try! You never know what you'll find.

As far as ideas go, most libraries need help, schools as well, and non-profit doctors offices are all good places to start. You could try working some community functions as well. They're usually one or two day events, so if you don't like it, you don't have to do it again. You might also check your area for organizations whose sole purpose is community service. They're always happy to have new members.

I have a friend who was raising a baby possum.

Had to carry it around in a satchel all the time while she was at schoool, had everyone swooning over it despite the fact it was actually pretty ugly.

I don't think I would have the patience to do what she does. I would love walking dogs though, maybe I could kill two birds with one stone there with the 'Action' part of things too...

I don't think killing birds with stones is a good way to get into animal rescue.

As opposed to SACE, which apparently makes it harder to get into overseas universities although the school likes to claim that isn't true.

Well first I'd learn to spell Bacc,,,, bacca,,,, Baccalaureate.

Then I would check to see what others have done to get some ideas. Then I would call Social Services and see if they can refer you. Check with the Public Library and see what they can tell you. They might be able to refer you to organizations that need help. Animal Shelters, Veterinarians, Food pantries, Salvation Army Shelters, the YMCA, or the local hospital.

Or just come to my place and clean the coop.

Is there a dog pound near you? they are usually in need of Volunteers for dog walking.
or a homeless shelter that needs help?

Plus you need to do a course to be able to look after wildlife, one of my friends did one to look after joey's, and they are very demanding, 3 feeds a day (or 4 depending on their weight) and outside time, helping them go to the toilet etc.
