Chicken friends, have you ever had a hen that crows? We thought Chipmunk was a roo because he crowed, but it's an unusual crow, not at all like Penguin. But the mannerisms are more like a hen. He/she roosts everywhere and broods like the hens. This morning our Alpha Male roo did "the dance" around him/her. Here's the pics side by side. Also, no cockspur nob. What are your thoughts?

Welcome to BYC!

I think I see some pointy shiny saddle feathers on the '?' bird.
So I call cockerel.
Females can indeed crow, but usually not at that age.

FYI.....semantics, maybe, but can be important communication terms when discussing chicken behavior.
Female chickens are called pullets until one year of age, then they are called hens.
Male chickens are called cockerels until one year of age, then they are called cocks(or cockbirds or roosters).

Thank you. I'm a newbie so I'm trying to learn all the terms and characteristics. He sure likes to crow but only after the Alpha crows.

The one with a question mark has pointy saddle feathers..typical signs of cockeral..and it crows..id say it's a roo. Some roos mature slower than others. I have some cockerals hatched in may...they aren't even crowing yet while some in the same hatch are.
