Beautifully written, TheMartianChick!

In your words, I'm reminded of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech:

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

45 years after that speech, a man born of an interracial couple at a time when that marriage was illegal in nearly half of the US States, has been elected to the highest office in this land. That he will be sworn into office 80 years and 5 days after the birth of that great orator who fought for the rights of many, is something we ought to all celebrate, no matter our political leanings. This could only happen when the majority of Americans saw him not as a black American, but as the best American to lead this country at this time.

Freedom for all in America didn't happen on July 4, 1776 but is something we continue to work at in our country. I hope that some day in my lifetime, we will see the election of a woman to lead this country and I will celebrate that day just as I celebrated this one, no matter the party. Each step forward makes us stronger as a people.

Never forget that this country is the only country in the world that is built on an IDEA, not on the shared ethnicity of a people.

E Pluribus Unum. Out of many, One.

Some of you guys are able to express yourselves very well and are well spoken. I wish I could write like that. I expect I am of simple upbringing.

<-------- Tips his hat to yall.

Naw, doesn't have anything to do with the upbringing. Some folks are just born with what's known as "the gift for gab!" Hahaha! I've been accused of it a time or two myself.

There's nothing like reading an eloquently written word though.

I am gonna have to take exception with that. If President Obama was running on my side of the isle and had what I consider to be my values and policies I would have voted for him. I did vote the other way but not based on race.

I am sure you meant no ill will, but believe it or not being a conservative does not make you racist.

While I understand where Purr was coming from, I have to back you up on this, mjdtexan. You are, of course, absolutely right. There is another thread where a young poster is insisting that the majority of Obama voters voted for him because of his race. That sentiment is no more or less offensive to me than the idea that those, like you (and my mother), who did NOT vote for him were against him because of his race.

No, being a conservative does NOT mean that you are a racist. I'm sure Purr didn't mean to imply that. Heck, I'm a Southern Baptist, NRA member who votes Democrat most of the time (though I'm declared Independent)--try THAT dichotomy on for size! Makes some heads explode. My husband's "Obama/Biden" bumper sticker was right below his Ducks Unlimited and Remington stickers, which always gave me a chuckle.

I did not mean to imply that anyone was a racist. But I do know people and some in my own family who would not vote for a black man.

Your right, I know em too. We probably all do. At least those of us in the 40ish age bracket.

That's sad, Purr....I wouldn't have had any problem voting for him if it wasn't for the whole trust issue....I don't think it's right for people to only look skin deep. Glad that's not you!!!

That's true. I was hoping that a lot more people would write in my name for President; however, I woke up this morning and found that I'd been beaten. Hopefully, Obama did not beat me by just ONE vote because in my humility and not wanting to appear over-confident, I voted for him.
That's okay though, in 2012 I'll know better.

Joe, you know there is no such thing in IN as write in vote. At least here it's all electronic, no write-ins......sorry. Start earlier in 4 years so you can get on ballet.

I hope for the best for our nation and new government. At least the election phone calls will stop......

So that's why I lost! I should have known, typical fascist Indiana politics. Did you notice the tones of disbelief this morning when the news commentators spoke of Indiana: They couldn't belief that "The Big Cornfield" went Democrat (by less than 1%), and for a black man at that.
