In your words, I'm reminded of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech:
In your words, I'm reminded of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech:
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
45 years after that speech, a man born of an interracial couple at a time when that marriage was illegal in nearly half of the US States, has been elected to the highest office in this land. That he will be sworn into office 80 years and 5 days after the birth of that great orator who fought for the rights of many, is something we ought to all celebrate, no matter our political leanings. This could only happen when the majority of Americans saw him not as a black American, but as the best American to lead this country at this time.
Freedom for all in America didn't happen on July 4, 1776 but is something we continue to work at in our country. I hope that some day in my lifetime, we will see the election of a woman to lead this country and I will celebrate that day just as I celebrated this one, no matter the party. Each step forward makes us stronger as a people.
Never forget that this country is the only country in the world that is built on an IDEA, not on the shared ethnicity of a people.
E Pluribus Unum. Out of many, One.
