Connecticut!

Hi Lisa,

The guy in cheshire only has Hatchery stock orps and there are only 2 left from what I understand. If you do not mind breed standards that would be a great way to start! They are from Mcmurray

Please feel free to post any question on here about your new venture with Chickens in CT!!! I know new chick 203 is doing a nice demo this weekend and showing folks her set up. Maybe if it is not too far from you, you could go and see?

Best Wishes to you!!!

Welcome Lisa! The event is in Ridgefield and will give you a great intro. There will be 3 of us with different types of wet ups with our coops open for visitors too. Check it out and we may be able to connect you with the right people. Buff Orps are pretty popular.

CAN NE1 PLEASE HELP OUT A FELLOW CT BACK YARD CHICKEN OWNER??? Im a 22 y/o from north haven wit a passion for cooking and all things cullinary i went 2 UNH and GATEWAY for cullinary arts and restaurant mgt......i got my first mini flock 2 1/2 weeks ago in hopes of having fresh organic eggs so i got 2 barred rock hens...guessing about a lil over 1yr old and 2 pullets 1 road island red and i think the other is a buff orpington based on size n colore she doesnt have a full comb yet tho where as my red is smaller in size but has a full comb. the 2 rocks came 2gether n the 2 others were part of a 4pack i split with sum 1 else at the Middlesex Livestock auction i got them from. i built a nice 8'x4' coop for them with 3 nesting boxes....they eat layer pellets and crumble and also have sum fresh curshed oyster shells ( i work @ Union League Cafe in New Haven so i have access 2 the shells and pulverize them my self) fesh water ..the works i am doing everything i am suposed 2 and they seem verry happy i let them out for a little bit each day and they have gotten 2 know me and are well behaved little girls haha....the only thing i cant figure out is if im doing everything correct whay wont they lay any eggs for me. they dont seem 2 be molting and are all at laying age 1may still b a few weeks 2young....but can anybody help me or give me some advice..i am getting frustrated and dont know if i should try getting 4 new ones and staring over or what? any responses would be greatly apreciated...THANKS

thanks ..i am hoping thats the case ..however the guy who but the rocks in the auction came up 2 me after and said
''thoes were my birds they r about a year old and r good layers'' but who knows maby he was selling them b/c he has 2 many or maby they realy wernt laying well for him n he wanted 2 get rid of them ..i guess thats the risks u take when buying at an auctionn but b/c im new i didnt know where else 2 get laying hens

johnny dont give up on them yet i have bought hens an not had them lay for 4-6 weeks after getting them.it is very stressful for them to move coops an be put with other birds.the ones you bought from the auction may be old birds that are done laying that is not a great auction to buy birds at alot of the time you are buying someone elses problems.keep us posted on how you make out.just think of how long it takes you to fell coftable when you move into a new place with new room mates.give them some time you are doing everything right you can try to put a few eggs from the fridge an sometimes that triggers them to lay.

Lisa

When you show birds each breed is judged by a "BREED STANDARD" Sush as color, comb, breast shape ect. It depends on what you want for your flock. Do you want birds with good taste or do you want birds that taste good?
