Connecticut!

Yeah I guess you would miss out on the frost then

I parked outside and had a touch of frost but, not bad. I felt bad for my flock though. Some of them are moulting and don't have all the feather warmth back on yet

Watch everyone is going to get sick now with the cold temps going to the hot temps and then back to the cold temps!!! I hate this time of year

Well, it was cold, but where I was there wasn't any frost. I do park in the garage though...so maybe I was just unaware. The forecast for the weekend..in the 80's on Sunday! Crazy weather!!

yea i hate it too. its like the weather cant make up its mind lol

Okay, we had a new voice coming from the basement this morning. It sounded like a chicken blowing a kazoo. I knew Gazpacho, my Bearded Quail D'Anver, wasn't the only roo.... so WHO was it???!!! Must have been one of the Silkies... I either have 3 girls and 1 boy, or 3 boys and 1 girl. Out of the four, the suspected boy is the one who only has 4 toes per foot. Either way, I think that's a good reason to get more Silkies, don't you???? And I can't get just one, because it would be lonely without some brooder mates (chicken math.)

Good news: The guys put the floor and studs for one of the walls to the raised coop so far!! Hoping they can get it finished by Thanksgiving! They had to change my design because we are building on a hill in the backyard, and the front of the coop is about 4-5 feet off the ground. The people entrance will have to go in back because it is only about a foot off the ground. Bummer.

Hello All,
Haven't been here in ages so thought I'd check in with an offer...about a year ago there was a thread about using coffee chaff in the coop as an alternative to shavings. I called a few coffee roasters but wasn't able to find one who would save their chaff for me. Finally, yesterday I got an e-mail from a roaster who said I could pick up 6 15-20 lb bags per week. I'm making my first trip out there tomorrow. Will have to figure out if the cost of gas is worth the free chaff! For anyone using chaff now or for those who would like to try it, let me know. I'm in Oxford. Sorry I missed the Derby get together. Thanks, Becky

That's a great score. I wish my guy would give me that much at once, that would set me up for months. I've been using chaff almost since I started. I love it. It's free, uses something that would otherwise end up in trash, and smells good. The 2 big plusses I see are that it's better for the compost pile nutritionally (if you compost), and it's so easy to clean up the coop. You use a big kitty litter scoop and sift out the clumps so the chaff goes a long way. If you are like me and just prefer to keep the coop tidy every day, it's a great way to go. If I had a big coop I might re think it. The downside is that every time someone gets flappy it all floats through the air and gets in the water. My intention was to switch to nipple water system, but I haven't done it, I just tip out the junk every morning.

I really need 2 more nice black pullets. I am depressed b/c that batch from up north I did a real good look over and out of the 10 I got, only 4 wind up being pullets

At first I don't know about you but, I couldn't tell! It took this long for the saddle feathers and combs to start showing their Cockrel side

I still like them and will most likely Keep and Extra one incase something happens to my Brutus Boy!!! But, man those Orps are HUGE!

As for the silkies you should send me a PM b/c I currently have a few youngsters I'm going to list on Auction and would give you first dibs if you are intersted.

I did try this one time and regret to say it did not work for me b/c when the stuff dried out every morning when my flock would come flying out of the coop that stuff was seriously airbourne. But, like Jill said for a small setting and maybe if I had a different set up I would definitely give it another try
