Connecticut!

Also, I get $4.50 a dozen unless them give me a carton on the spot then it's $4.00 a dozen at the farmers markets

Shoprite is getting $2-2.60 per large white dozen, more for brown eggs. I'll bet anyone who wants eggs from hens that eat unadulterated feed and bugs would pay up to $6/doz. or more for free range. I would consider any chickens that were out in the yard for a few hours a day "free range". As opposed to being cooped up and fed feed with hormones and antibiotics. Not to mention "pink slime"!

Hi Folks, One of my customers is holding a great event on March 31st. She will have easter hunts, petting zoo, free tractor drawn hayrides, refreshment stand, and is a great lady!! Her feed store has lots to offer not only for the poultry in our life but, other livestock too. Hope some of you can make out there with your little ones!!!

Beth, I got notice about that one. I'm glad you posted about it, for the shoreline peeps especially.
The same day, Saturday March 31st, is a Grand Re-opening and "Chick Day" at Labeniec's in Berlin--now right across from the DQ, a little west of where they were before. (Here's a little about it: http://aslabieniec.com/events)
However, it's also my niece's baby shower, so I might miss all the good chicken stuff that day.

Hi all,

I plan on reading thru this whole thread. I live in Watertown CT just north of Waterbury. My neighbor is getting chickens and we talked about helping each other build coops easier with 2 people. He has rasied chickens for years and I plan on learning from him and this site. thank you in advance for any and all help

Not yet but I am researching which is easier for a newbie. I am open to suggestions I am looking to start with 4-6 chickens I will be building a coop and run large enough for 10-12 so down the road if I want to do more I will. I have just over a acre of land with nothing but woods in the back about 15 acres behind me.

Smart of you to plan for more. Our first 6 bantams are coming in 3 months....but we're probably getting a 4x6 coop. Technically we could add a number of chickens, but I like the idea of their having more space if we add some large fowl later. I'm already lobbying the husband to consider chicken math, but he's an engineer and doesn't get it. He likes regular math. And things not changing on him.

If I had my way, we'd be getting Easter Eggers for their cute chipmunk faces and various colored eggs, Barred Rocks or Dominiques for their good looks and classic dual-purpose New England hardiness, Rhode Island Reds for the same, and some Golden-Laced Wyandottes because they're be-yoo-tiful. Even Silkies, which we're getting, can live here, but I'd rather have gone for tougher larger birds so my worry-wart self would have less to worry about. I figure if some of these breeds were kept in ye olden days before electricity and fancy-pants coops, they'll still do well today.

I have more eggs right now than takers for them...any favorite recipes featuring eggs? I need to increase my repertoire. This morning I hollowed out dinner rolls. Put some cheese in there, and cracked in an egg..then baked until the egg was set. Delish!
