Hi all!
Does anyone have a rooster we could er...borrow for a few days? We have a a leghorn that goes broody and my 8 yr. old was very excited about letting the chicken do the incubating this time. We have borrowed an incubator over the years and my source is off eloping Anyway, we treat our 3 girls very well here and we could pickup and drop off unless someone wanted to checkout the digs and talk chickens

. We have an enclosed run where everyone would be for the 3 or 4 days. I know beggars can't be choosers but a gentle rooster (so that the offspring would be docile) would be very much appreciated. OR, as a last resort, if anyone has an incubator they'd like to lend out...thanks!

Our chicks will be here early next week. So I spent a bit of time this morning building the chick staging station. First was the brooder. Our mud room gave up a 3' x 3' space for this. This will be home for the little buggers while I build the coop. Some pics below. What do you think?

Peg board tops for good ventilation. There are stops holding the angled piece.


Adjustable brood lamp base. It can be lowered in 1" increments. If it does get too cold, I have the ability to add another lamp.

This looks really great! The only thing that I see that worries me is the heat lamp. Do you have another way of securing the lamp other than the clamps and the cord? I learned the hard way - when I was setting up for my chicks (thank goodness they hadn't been there when it happened) the lamp, which was only secured to my brooder by the clamp, fell on the brooder floor. I wouldn't recommend hanging it from just the cord either, since that's just an accident waiting to happen! I tied a piece of baling twine to the metal hanger that came with the lamp. Good luck!

Thanks. The lamp is actually supported very well. It's near impossible for the lamp to fall off the board. If you look closely where the clamp attaches there are a series of screws every one inch. The screws are like pegs that hook onto the clamp legs and prevents it from sliding or wobbling off. Worst it will do is have the shield angle down and hit the board.

The lamp is currently set at 12" high. I put the screws every 1" so I can easily keep track of the height. If we get a cold spell I have another heat lamp that I can hook up in a similar manner.

Greetings from Plainfield. I've been a bad BYC member. Joined a long time ago and once I got my girls up and running, I kinda stopped posting on here.

Well I am going to try to turn it around and do some more posting. Just to reply to OmeletMan. Not sure why you have the peg board on top. it looks tall enough so they chicks shouldn't jump out. other than that, it looks good. you may want to go ahead and grab a second lamp. I had one to start and got a second to cover an entire end of my brooder. Not an expert, just my opinion

My girls now are two years old and I have the itch again this year to get my chicks. I stayed tough last spring when the local Agway and Tractor Supply got the chicks in.....I'm not staying strong this year. My wife doesn't know but the brooder will be set up in the basement tomorrow and there very well could be little chicks in it by tomorrow night!! shhh...don't tell. Oh, if anyone has any scrap material that could be used towards a small coop that they want to get rid of, please let me know. I'll be glad to take it off your hands. I plan on building something smaller than what I have now, but need material none the less. thanks

Peg board was laying around. I wanted to be able to cover it to keep it warm in case temps drop.

Does anyone in CT have an empty bator or broody?????

I have eggs coming out of my ears!!! I have filled both my bators, I have a friend that filled my bator at her house and his hatching, then I have a friend using a shelf of his bator for me. All 5 of my broodies are full with eggs under them and I am still collecting 4-6 dozen eggs a day.

If anyone is interested I have Duck, Turkey, Silkie, Bantam Cochins, Olive Eggers First Generation Project, and Orpingtons.
