sorry thats not me i'm out east in lebanon. the 9 i have are young but they're my 1st chicken venture, i have had cows since i was a baby and we had some pigs for awhile. i'm looking to get rid of an ee roo if you know anyone interested, and i'm also looking for some more pullets probably 2 or 3, preferrably buffs or americuanas, but i'm not very picky as long as they'll be layers.

Lebanon is a beautiful town. I love the eastern part of the state. I'm
sorta central CT south of Waterbury. Not a lots of chickens here.

Hopefully someone will do a CT Chickenstock.

I am in Fairfield Cty -

I was all set to build the coop I have been designing and get my chickens, and then found out that my town has a law that any chicken coop must be at least 300 feet from any human dwelling. I only live on 1.3 acres, so I can't get 300 feet from both neighbors on either side of me -

What town are you in? Many towns have distance requirements but 300 feet
seems a bit high. If your friendly with your neighbors and don't want 100 birds
you should be ok.

Fairfield County, "The Gold Coast" as refered to by people in the northeast
portion of the state, is not that bad on chickens. I see them around more
than you might expect.

The worst parts are near Hartford. Heck you can't even hang laundry in
West Hartford.

i worked out in the fairfield county area, shelton/bridgeport for about 6months. i saw some people w/ chickens out there, even 1 person who had them in the basement in old kitchen cabinets, although i think they had a fighting thing going. i hear that purple on the w. hartford/ farmington valley area i also worked there it wasn't much fun all the people thought they were better than you. i was in a trailer park the other day out in eastern ct, where i work now, there was a person who had some hens there, not sure its legit but they had them. i think you could probably get away w/ a few hens if you build a small inconspicous coop out of the way, if your neighbors are cool. heck you could give them some eggs as a trade off. i think the biggest thing w/ zoning is the odor/ waste factor, i have 9 and they don't really smell at all, i do however have a compost pile which their waste goes into. i smell the big egg farm more which is about 3mi away.

Hello from North Windham!

We've got three old lady hens right now; a barred rock and two little girls whose breed I am clueless about. I got them through one of my former student's mom who works at UCONN. They came from UCONN and she never was able to tell me what they were. They lay smallish white eggs, but the hens are not as small as bantams. Anyway, we're thinking of getting chicks for the first time this spring. I'd like some red sex links and maybe blacks too. I'm also thinking maybe Orpingtons? They seem really pretty. We've had the reds before and they've always been the friendliest of all the breeds we've had. We've had barred rocks, a cochin, and a silver spangled hamburg as well as our reds over the past 10 years. We'll be building a larger coop over the winter. I'm really looking forward to this new venture but I'm nervous about mail ordering chicks. Sounds like lots of people have had success with it though so I'll be looking for reassurance when the time comes!
