Connecticut!

Hello Connecticut BYC

we have to rehome our handsome rooster Benny, does anyone need a roo for a pet or breeding?

we are in Bristol.

The Haddam show was great. Lot's of lovely birds, good fun and good burgers too.

it's the kind of event that makes you want a bigger coop.

Thanks Johnny,  She was snuggling on my chest while I was watching tv, then the dog barked and she ran under my ear / hair.  Made me feel real mommy like.  lol.  Since then she has had a major attachment to me.

Thats funny....i had 1 like that she used to sit with me when she was a chick and in the house....last year the 1st nice day i opened the window and was watching Tv while they were roaming the yard and she jumped through the window and came inside and sat on the couch next to me....i thought it was so cool...then she pooped on the carpet lol

Wonder why it became an issue- neighbor complaint? I'm putting up a fence I don't want to deal with mine giving me grief and I have a permit.
It started with a neighbor complaining that she has asthma and that the smell of the chickens made her sick. The ordinance came from the 80's when someone in plainville was trying to keep a horse. lol I'd say a horse is much different than a few chickens!!!

I live in Berlin and they make you have 3 acres to have any chickens, or even a bunny rabbit. Some of the laws are ridiculous if you ask me. You need the same amount of land for 1 chicken, 1 bunny, and 1 horse. Doesn't make sense. Thankfully we have more than 3 acres.

A bunny?!?!? Do you get in trouble if one hops across your yard....? VIOLATION!!! VIOLATION!!!

It is pretty ridiculous to have the same chickens and horses in the zoning req.'s

That woman's yard is not at all tiny, at 21,000 sq. ft.. Almost a half-acre. In fact, mine is not all that much bigger! Not sure how the neighbor is being so affected by chickens. Even if the woman never cleaned up after the chickens, it would take a while for them to really stink enough to waft into another person's yard. I can't believe that the Town of Plainville Zoning Board wouldn't at least compromise and say should could keep at least a few chickens, with the caveat that they are suitable confined and that she keeps things clean (she could just compost in a closed bin or something). Perhaps there is a little history between these two? If it's really the neighbor's asthma, wouldn't their be other triggers like pollen, cats, bunnies? Things probably going to be a little bit tense along that property line, if it wasn't already... Well, I don't know either of them so this is just my own conjecture. Bummer to have to give away her chickens.

Painful as it is, I can understand having a "no-rooster" rule in residential areas with smaller lots. I am still trying to rehome mine. They are living in the garage, as I hold on to hope that I will be able to place them as pets. They are noisy- no denying it. It would be nice if there was reasonableness exception to the rule- "no roosters outside, from 8 p.m. - 8 a.m." Treat it the same as a barking dog situation. For now, just hoping that my nice, very quiet neighbors on the one side will be patient, and that the guy on the other side doesn't decide to be a creep about it because he has nothing better to do. I'd still be afforded some backup from the permit, but don't have time to do battle at the moment.
