I just added 3 new laying hens ..golden commets to my flock yeasterday after realizing that my 2 Barred rock hens are young roos. They havnt started to crow yet but tail and saddle feathers sealed their fate. Go figure as soon as i got them fully trained
o well thats life. Also im still 50/50 if my RI RED is a roo...dont know ITS age but im guessing between 10-14 weeks, in north haven I cant have roos but they have too much of awsum persionalities to be dinner "for me at least" but seince the reasion for keeping chickens is for eggs to eat not hatch the roos must go
The intergration so far has been very smooth, I kept the 3 new commets in a large wooden crate with poultry wire over top and my BR roos esp the dominte1, once he heard them he ran up 2 the box and walked around like.. "comon i know theres some1 here but i dont see any1"...so once my 4 originals went inside to go get their beuty sleep I let the 3 commets out 2 wonder around the coop area which I fenced in a large area around the coop.
I went inside to cook sum dinner 4 the parents and when i went back outside the commets were no where 2 be found i was so mad that i lost all 3 of my new birds in less than 6hrs of having them...to my amazement some how they went back in2 the crate i kept them in during the day which is 3 feet high, and no way to get back in. Sure enough all 3 were sitting inside ina row..my chickens never seice 2 amaze me haha
With my 4 originals asleep in the coop i put the 3 commets inside with them ...when i woke up this morning it was like they had been there seince the begining like the old1s didnt even realize i added them eventhough the new commets are still timid of the roosters
Now comes the hard part..the fact that i cant keep the 3 roos...im assuming the ri red is going to grow up 2 be a nice roo 2 so hes going go while hes still young. So if any1 here is interested in the rocks or the red i will reluctantly give 1 or all 3 to any1 here who would like 1 or all of them. The rocks were $11 and the red was $5 but BYC member gets them for free. They can be picked up if you live far away or if you are close to north haven I will even drop them off to their new home.
Otherwise on Monday they will be taking a field trip 2 the Middlesex Livestock auction. i have never put anything in the auction b4 but dont know what else 2 do with them and want to get rid of them ASAP b4 they start crowing. I realy think some1 here should take them or at least 1 of them. I have no doubt that they will make a great addition to any flock in need of a roo, rather than going to the auction.
