Connecticut!

Hey, Phineas and Ferb is a great cartoon-I'm sure even the d'uccle appreciates it!!
What treat do you use most often? I haven't found something yet that they love enough that they'll come on sight of it.

Luke13:34 :

Mine will come running when I yell "Treeaaat!" in a high, shrill voice (of course, one should actually have a treat with them when making this noise!). My large fowl also have been trained to go back into the run when I clap my hands. Sometimes they will follow me when I do this. When they are not so quick to obey, I have a long stick that I use to help round them up (guiding - not hitting or touching the birds). The bantams simply give me the middle claw and go running under the fence into the brush.

You know you live in a chicken-loving house when you come down stairs and see your kids watching Phineas and Ferb with their d'Uccle.

Calling "treat" can mean anything except their regular feed. Usually leftovers from dinner. I also make up a treat mix of "Classic Backyard Bird" seed, BOSS, cracked corn, oatmeal, raisins, cut alfalfa, cut comfrey and powdered kelp (ratios may vary throughout the year based on what I have in stock. more oatmeal in the winter to help keep them warm). I shake this all up in an old Deli Cat container. I can give this a shake without even calling "TREAT" and they know the sound and will come running. Happy Hen or Flukers dried worms are also a favorite, but are rather expensive. Watermelon is a sure hit.

I have been using the "TREEAAAT" call since my girls were babies and I first brought things to them in the brooder. But with persistence and consistency, older girls will pick up on it. Our bantams were brought in as hens and they picked up on it pretty quickly.

EDITED TO ADD: Yours are still little right now, right? Mine didn't like too many treats to begin with (they assumed I was out to poison them!). They like a bit more variety now (except for kidney beans which are NOT to be trusted!). Give them time and keep things age-appropriate for them and keep the grit available.

I started the "TREEAAAT" call this week ~ my daughter was giggling because of the new sounding call for them.

That honey bread sounds very yummy!
Maybe I can try some October 1st?

Tina they're almost 3 months old now ... and yeah they tend to look at new foods like they're poison -but the dog is more than happy to act as their taste tester in most cases - in fact I've seen her take scraps from them and then they take them back - like corn cobs

I've been chanting 'baby baby baby' and 'birdie birdie birdie' (well, sounds more like 'boydee boydee boydee' now) since they were little whenever I wanted their attention, and it DOES get their attention-but they don't come to me. if they're out in the open they'll come to the coop when I call, but when they're deep in the bushes-fat chance, regardless of what I call or what I'm holding. I'll keep shaking their treat plate (a cheap pie tin great for holding scraps and making some noise with) and hope that they figure out the tin means food and they should come to it... Of course, that might be asking a lot of SOME of them. Yesterday my light brahma tried climbing up the wire sides of the range instead of using the ramp to get into the coop - the coop she's been living in for quite a while now!

Well, I just finished up my quarterly testing for the State of CT, Dept of Ag. It took almost 5 hours to test 125 birds of my 200+ flock. Thankfully I do not have to test the weee little ones

otherwise that would have taken another 5 hours!!!

Anyway what is all the CT chicken folk up to this weekend? I'm actually off tomorrow

I'm thinking of going crabbing OR go out for dinner or something to treat myself for the 65-70 hour work weeks I've been doing the last 2 months. I could go for a nice Seafood platter
