Glad you didn't lose power! Sorry to hear about all the make up days for school though

That stinks for teachers, kids, and parents

They went back today. No decisions about when the rest of the days will be made up until the December Board of Ed meeting. Guess we won't be making any plans for April vacation.... I had really hoped to go to DC but we'll have to wait!

My friends in Hamden, CT Told me its unofficial but, they are losing their April Vacation too! She only knows this b/c they book an event there for the Chamber of Commerce during the April Vacation and the school officials contacte the Chamber telling them they need to find a new place. Maybe if this winter isn't that bad they will let you keep it

I don't know how it happened, but Ivoryton never lost power from the last storm. Schools never closed either. Pretty amazing with all the trees we have around here. I guess Irene took out all our weak ones! Feel badly for everyone without power or heat - some for more than a week. Hope eveyone is fully restored by tonight.

Been working hard on the newly expanded chicken run and barn deck. Almost complete. Two more long days should do it. Will be posting photos soon. When it's ready I'll have to integrate our three separate groups into one happy family, in theory at least.

Last month we lost our bantam cochin roo Napoleon and a pullet (Scooter) to an unknown predator living in some small caves in the retaining wall along he property line. Exterminator suggested I pour ammonia and mothballs into the openings as most animals hate the smell and will move on. It seems to have worked, no more tracks or disturbed earth along the wall.

Charlie, one of our mutt roos (originally named Charlene) has taken to pecking my pant leg (or fingers, if he can get to them) when he wants to be let back into the coop at dusk. He's allowed to free range during the day, but he doesn't want to go in the main front door, which is propped open, with the rest of the birds. He wants to be let in through his "private entrance" in the back of the coop (opens onto the egg-laying section). He'll come and find me if I am anywhere outside and peck at me until I pick him up and carry him to his door. Then he hops in and I swear dismisses me like I am part of the staff or something. It's the darndest thing.

Rudy is happy with his girls from Pam, they're happy too, they run up to me now!!! I love it when my chickens run up to me hehe makes me feel so loved, Taco trusts me more then Waddles and Iris right now, she's comfortable enough to let me pet her for a little bit, they followed me around in the yard when i had a cup of food to throw on the ground for them to scratch.

Some of my poor babies are getting picked on by the others and I know it's because they are too crowded in the brooder (I can hear them fighting on occasion.)

I have tried to bring a few up and in the pen, just to give them a stress break. It's heartbreaking seeing them with feathers torn out or spots bleeding on their backs.

This just started within the last couple of days when I noticed a bald patch on my Golden Campine.

(The coop is not finished yet!)

I don't have any other cages to separate them and I'm not sure who the instigator is.

Do I clean the area on the back with warm water and Dawn soap and then rub on Neosporin? Do you think it will get better once they are out in the coop - they will have much more room! I blame myself for putting the chicks before the coop (like many of us!)

Hi, Your babies are at the age when they are getting sexually mature and are figuring out pecking order. Unfortunately you can treat the bare spots but, the only thing that will solve the issue is more space. Crowding leads to feather plucking and pecking. Also if they are confined too long it will stunt their growth and develop other bad habits like toe picking and eat feces etc.... Any chance of you buying some inexpensive used dog crates on craigslist or at tagsales? PM me if you need help b/c I'm only the next town over.

I LOVE seeing pictures of them!! It looks like you are taking good care of them and they are very happy! Taco is the most friendly of the three. Waddles has always been a bit more skiddish and Iris isn't overly friendly but they ALL love their treats.

I've never had chicks fight like that before. How old are they? Are they very crowded? Maybe you should buy another cage or two and separate them to give them more space. If they are too crowded, the fighting will continue.

yes i can tell Taco is the most friendly, Waddles came out alot more than Iris, im not pushing them to love me cause i know im new to them and dont want to freak them out, so they have fun running around in the yard and play in the dirt under my ramp to my back door, i love them and dan actually got attached to them too, its kinda funny, he's like i love watching them waddle. i have more photos and a video of them on facebook, i couldnt share the video to your sensational silkie page.
