Connecticut!

We do the same thing. One of these days we will have to do a more permanent solution.

How long will an extension cord last that way? We're constantly smacking into ours. Will it keep several years if buried?

~ "buried" I don't mean way down into the dirt - just a slight covering of mulch to hide it. Very temporary.
Our new mulch path out to the Hen House is now "crispy" when I walk on it -- frozen wood chips.

Well Its Official for me!! Frozen water everyday now

I've tried for years to ask the DH to allow me to put heated waterers but, its a no go. I would need 13 of them and he said that's too many fire hazards

So, I'm back to my water de-icing. Which I will share incase any of you out there are like me and not allowed heated waterers.

I use the black flexible rubber buckets. Every night I empty them out at dark b/c chickens while roosting are not going to get off the roost in the dark to drink. I remove all ice, scrub, spray with a non-toxic corn oil spray evenly, and then leave to fill at first light. The reason for the corn oil is it helps keep the ice attaching to the sides and makes it easier to break up during the day to keep water available. It also makes it easier to empty the ice out

I also use plastic waterers in my brooders but, the heat lamps used don't allow them to freeze thank goodness. But, for the silkies I can not give them open containers of water. So each evening I take the waterers into my basement where the woodstove is over night and defrost any ice, dump refill and put back out in the first light. Same thing with those I spray them with the corn oil b/c it helps keep the ice from really forming.

Best Wishes to all during this winter season!!!

*** Edited to say make sure you bring the spray oil in at night!! Those freeze too

I learned that the hard way

Okay CT'ers... I need your brain power. As you know, it's a bit too cold to paint or stain right now. My coop is progressing slowly and we're down to the trim, ventilation, roosts, nest boxes, runs, and the other details. Please view my BYC page to view pictures. The interior and exterior are made of rough milled barn board. These are my issues:

1) Windows are hinged at the top, and have friction stays (see picture on my BYC page.) I need to attach 1/2" hardware cloth and screen to the interior of each window opening (will cover edges with interior trim around window.) I also need to be able to open and close and latch the windows from the inside of the coop (built on a slope.) Windows are single paned. I will post a couple of pictures of hardware that I was considering using to do this, but there are 7 exterior windows, the windows swing open at an angle, and we don't want this to cost a fortune. Your ideas/suggestions are needed!

2) The gaps in the barn board floors will be caulked. It's too cold to paint them right now. I want to use pine shavings on the floor, but do not want the floor to rot out before we get it painted. I also want it to be easy to clean. This goes for the barn board walls as well. Again, money is an issue as I am not working. I don't know where to find cheap linoleum, and I don't want to take away from the rustic barn look either. Your ideas/suggestions are needed!

3) There is a ridge vent. We will also be adding soffit vents and vents on the ends of the coop. We may even be getting an exhaust fan to put on the roof. I was planning to put chicken wire all along the ceiling (above or below the rafters) so that the chickens can't roost up there and the air can still circulate. I purposely designed an entryway so that no one escapes when the door is opened. Screen doors will access the inside chicken area from the entryway. Should I close in the top of the entryway area and use it for additional storage, or leave it open to allow more air flow? Your ideas/suggestions are needed!

4) Roosts will be attached to the walls along the front and side of the coop. Not sure what to do about poop boards. I am not planning to use the deep litter method at this time. I was going to run nipple waterers along the same walls, under the poop boards so they can not be roosted on. Your ideas/suggestions are needed!

Did I forget anything else? This stuff is keeping me up at night!!!

Well, it sounds like you have it all figured out and it's going to be really nice! The window thing. I just don't think it's a big deal to get at them from inside. I know you said that outside access is sloping, but how often do you need to fiddle with them? If you have other ventilation it's open in Summer and closed in winter. the floor. I had the same issue as you with painting mine. We decided to leave the raw wood till spring, and you know what, Spring came and went and it never got painted and it's fine. Don't worry about it too all much. It looks like you are doing just fine.

Okay, I'm the only one I know who can kill a thread for an entire state!!! Lol.

Good news CT friends - I went down to feed the chickens this morning and found our first egg!!!! It was in the brooder with the 16 chickens that are not even 20 weeks old yet!!! I quick threw a plastic tub with shavings in there and the Silkie is checking it out. Hope no one breaks the egg!!!! I have no idea who laid it. I needed to be blessed with some good news!!! Praise God!

It's funny because I've had a plastic tub in the cage with the D'Anver pair for about 5 weeks now. They are about 5 weeks older than my other chickens. Yesterday, Gazpacho was rearranging the shavings in the tub and calling to Amelia Egghart to come and check it out. He's so cute with her. He tosses some food pellets into the water for her because he knows she likes to eat them wet. When I put a treat in the cage for them, he gets all excited and stands nearby calling her over to let her eat first. What a gentleman!!

Maybe I should put the egg in the cage with the D'Anvers????

If it's the first egg it may be what they call and egg fart which is small in size and a runny white inside. I'd say yeah maybe give her a hint

You didn't kill the thread I think this time of year with the holidays all us regular chickie folks are a bit pre-occupied but, we'll all be back come winter after holidays talking about how we long for spring and summer again!!
