Okay, I did manage to take a couple of pictures before I left when the chick was still a bit wet. I set it down on the ground and then you can barely see it-- but I'm going to post it anyway! Then the next two pictures are from just now when I got home. It's fluffed and chirping! :)

Here is proud mama sitting on baby!

Here is newly hatched baby!! (BELOW)

Here is a better one-- I felt terrible for setting it down and held it up and right after this, I quickly stuffed her right back under mama Yoda. (BELOW) OH-- she has a vaulted skull!! Which I think is pretty neat.

Here she is when I got home-- all fluffed. But she's sooooo teeny tiny!!! (BELOW)

And a close up of my new baby Silkie!!! (BELOW)

OMGosh, it's AMAZING!!!! I couldn't stop thinking about her all day! It's a good thing I was gone all day so she had plenty of time to dry out under her broody mama. I just took the pics and stuffed her back. I'm not goign to mess with her too much right now. Her mama got up to eat and drink when I got home. Yoda does that-- she loves my attention and talks to me when I come out to see her. So I was able to hold the chick long enough to get some pics. Soooooooooooooo excited!!!!!

Its a lot of fun, don't give up hope on incubation. I just wonder if you should send the bator back, and have them check it a the factory and make sure it is right.

I'm starting to wonder about that too! I think Zorro's fertility is okay-- because I've had 3 of his eggs here recently start to develop and then die and form blood rings. One even got a bean in the middle with veins going outward.. and it died on Day5, I believe. So sad, NOTHING is growing in there. I've been chatting back and forth with Brinsea. They are having me check a few things which is taking hours/days to do and then we'll see where we end up with it. Sigh.

Hawkeye, that's so darned cute! Congrats again, I'm happy for you!

IVY, I'm so sorry to hear about your birds & the dog. Some dogs just can't be around poultry. I have one tiny little 5# Yorkie that fortunately stays in the house most of the time, but she chases chickens whenever she gets the chance. I don't know if she would harm them, but I don't give her the opportunity either. My GPs outside haven't bothered the chickens at all, but love chasing & teasing the cats & have killed two of our baby kittens so far, so go figure. You just don't know what drives them. I'm sorry for your loss at any rate. I hope you didn't hurt your knee either when your crutch broke, wow be careful, you don't want to end up back in surgery.

Yay for Zorro's fertility! :) Very very cute chicky!!!

There are so many posts I inteded to reply to, but got so wrapped up in this disaster with the dogs I've just hardly been able to think. Anyway, Hawkeye, congratulations on your new chick. Are you sure the kids aren't shaking that incubator or something?

Danz-glad you are getting things rolling with the construction. Hope all is going well with that.

Trish-Congrats on the cute baby bunnies. On the ameraucanas, my lavenders are definitely lavender when hatched. The blacks are black with white or lighter colored tummies, etc.

Tweety-Glad the one that got picked on is doing okay, but one other thing is kind of important. Be sure you isolate the guilty party, but if one of your birds gets badly pecked or something you will want to isolate or protect that one, too. There is nothing like an open wound to entice the rest of the gang to peck and pick on them.

Karen-How's the hobbling along going? I think I'm doing pretty good right now, but kind of stiff and sore tonight.

If I've missed other questons please forgive me. I'm still so upset it's hard to think straight.

We just got back with a pair of blue slate turkeys. These are the same age as the others. I wanted to get a tom in there with the remaining hen as soon as possible so she didn't take off with some of the wild toms or something. The blues are checking out their new digs right now. I was surpried at how much larger the blues are than the royal palms. I hope I can keep these big guys calm. It looks like they could be a real challenge to handle if they are pretty wild.

I have 5 eggs from the royal palms in the incubator. I hope they all hatch. I guess I can raise some pure blues this year and then hopefully next year I will have my royal palms.
