Consolidated Kansas

I met Josie today. It is always so nice to meet one of you in person!
On a sad note I am a bit in shock. I thought my Mom was doing better and I had relaxed a little about her condition since she had been able to eat again for a couple days. I went to visit her and my Dad was there so I visited with both of them. Nothing seemed amiss.
And then I found out after I left that my oldest sister had taken her to the pulmonary specialist this morning because her oxygen level had dropped so low during her physical therapy. He examined her and told them that it was time to call in Hospice and just make her as comfortable as we could, that her lungs had deteriorated so much. Mom knew and she said nothing. My Dad didn't know, but my sister was going by after work to tell him. I feel like the earth has been ripped out from underneath me. I can only imagine how my dad feels.
My Mom said she was going to beat this thing but my sister said she doesn't think Mom realizes how serious it is at this point. She has fought this thing so long.
I didn't go to town all weekend because I was sure she was doing much better. I guess I had myself convinced she was going to get well.

I wish I were there to give you a real hug.

Oh no, Danz, I'm so sorry that your mom is not doing so well. I've not dealt with any parents being that ill before, so I just don't know how I would handle that. Just know that I'll be thinking of you and I'll keep you and your mom and dad in my prayers.

Hawkeye, looks like your new grand-chicky will be a splash, does it look that way to you?

Yes!!! I do think it will be a Splash! I'm SUPER excited about that! I think that is really my favorite color! :) It's all silver right now, but I expect that the black will come in soon enough.

Anyway, I hope so! I held it again a bit ago-- mama Yoda was drinking and eating. It's getting around a bit better now. It doesn't fall over at every step. But its still not strong enough to really walk really good yet. It's just hanging out under Yoda. Hopefully by tomorrow it'll be doing a lot better. I'll introduce it to the water and food tomorrow.

We've been monitoring her and no-one else is picking on her at all. I did put the bluekote on it to protect it - boy that stuff doesn't come off anything. I still have blue fingers and a blue splashed shirt as well. Looked at her tonight when we got home and it's already looking a lot better. No blood to speak of, just raggedy looking broken feathers.

It might be the stress, but for some reason the ducks are refusing to go into the pond. oh well.

Glad she's doing better. No idea why they aren't playing in the water.

IVY, it's strange that every one of the chicks that have hatched so far have been black. Is black dominant or something? I just had another chick hatch in the hatcher downstairs & I can't tell yet for sure what color it is because it's still wet, but it looks like it could possibly be lighter than the rest. I have one other egg pipping today, but it's an Easter Egger. I have people wanting those too, so I had put some in for them. I candled the eggs that are in the hatcher & I doubt that three of them are going to hatch, but we'll see, I was surprised before, so I could be again. IVY, I have Royal Palm eggs in my incubator right now, but they haven't been in there long enough to tell anything at all. I'm going to pick up some more next Weds. when I go to Derby to get my hair cut. There is a guy in north Wichita that has Royal Palms & is selling hatching eggs. I would rather drive up there & pick them up than have them shipped, lower risk that way. He has crossed some Royal Palms also with Bourbon Reds & boy are they beautiful in the pics. He is trying to talk me into some of those, but I don't know, he says they're bigger than the Royal Palms, which I really don't want, I prefer the smaller ones in my situation actually. We don't need huge turkeys here with just the two of us. I don't think there are as many Royal Palms around either as there are other breeds of turkeys. I'm going to have to build a pen just for them. What kind of pen do you have yours in?

This is the Royal Palm/Bourbon Red Crosses he has. I do think they have pretty coloring. I will see them next week when I go pick up the eggs. I have never hatched turkey eggs before, so we'll see how it goes. I have hatched chickens & ducks before but never turkeys. I want to try peacocks too as soon as I can get my hands on some eggs. I definitely need a bigger incubator. I found a guy in Oklahoma that builds them & they look really nice for $200, that sounds like a good deal if they work good.

Oh, yesterday my GP pups were barking at something, so I went out to see what they were barking at. There were wild turkeys over the fence in the neighbor's field & they were barking at them. I guess they didn't think they belonged here, but they're all around us all the time. I hadn't seen so many wild turkeys until I moved here.

Those turkey are gorgeous! I really like the red color!

Danz-So sorry to hear about your Mom. You will all be in my prayers.

Trish-Yes, those royal palm/bourbon red crosses are really pretty. Is that what they call a calico?

It looks like I may be getting a few blue slate/royal palm crosses this year. I don't know how that will turn out. Anyone have any ideas?

Also, there is a slight chance the hen that I just got may have mated with a narraganset so we may get some slate blue/narraganset crosses if she did. I'm just going to hatch whatever I get for now and hope for the best. If I get some I don't want to keep there is always turkey with dressing and gravy.

Wow. So much to catch up on!

First thing I need to say is Danz, I'm just so sorry to hear about your mom's worsening condition. I'm praying for all of you.

You described what it feels like perfectly. The earth is ripped from under your feet and you look around and can't imagine that all of nature hasn't felt the same cataclysmic shift, yet it doesn't seem to have. I suspect your mom protected you from the news as long as she could. She just wanted you to have a nice visit. I felt shut out when my mom tried to protect me, like she didn't need to share the bad news with me. That's not how it was from her perspective. She had my Dad to lean on and wanted me to be able to focus as best I could on my own family and life. Hang in there.

I met HEChicken this evening. So nice to meet you and so much fun to be able to show off my birds and talk about chickens. I truly enjoyed it.

Hawkeye! I'm so happy you have a chick!!!!! That's fantastic! I hope Brinsea can help solve the incubator dilemma.

Ivy, that's just the pits about your birds and bad dog. So sorry to hear it. Thanks for asking about the wretched ankle. I am finally walking without the crutches! I'm still wearing the fashionable boot. It aches after I've been up and around awhile but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm so glad you didn't do any serious harm to your knee yesterday. I understand because I have one troublesome dog that starts disagreements with the others. During the first week she started in and I jumped up to stop her -- forgot all about my ankle, then grabbed the crutches and got myself all tangled up in them. I thought those crutches were going to be the death of me on many occasions. They're so necessary but cripes! Sure hope the rest of your recovery goes smoothly.

Tweety, my girls still talk about your duck's swimming vid. Hope "solitary" gives your naughty duck a fresh perspective.

Pikeman did you get your girls yet?

Here are some of my egg pictures:
This one is day 6
This one is day 8, one of my 'hopeless' eggs
Day 6
Day 6
Day 8, another 'hopeless'...I think this one looks promising, not sure.
Yet another Day 8, looks interesting with that divit there. What's that all about?
Day 8. This one is hopeless; all clear. The black spots are dirt.
THIS day 8 shows promise! Look at that veining! And I see movement inside!!!
Another day 8 showing some veining and movement ^_^

What does anyone else think? Normal? Bad, Good? Wish I could've gotten better pictures :/

I just typed a whole big thing & lost it, arrgggghhh! IVY I just went out this afternoon & was looking at the chicks in the brooder & they're getting lighter in color. They started out black with lighter wings & now the lighter color is spreading. Have you ever had them hatch out black & then get lighter? I can't tell much from the one that just hatched today, it's not fluffed out yet. I'm going to get some more Royal Palm eggs from that guy next Weds. but I think he was kind of trying to talk me into the crosses too. They are pretty, but he says they're bigger & I think I want to stick with the smaller ones to start out with. I can always go back later now that I know he has them & get some of those if I decide to. He said he got started with shipped eggs, so I guess sometimes at least they do make it. I would rather pick them up though than have them shipped since he's within driving distance & I have to go to Derby anyway, so I won't be that far away from where he is that I can't drive there.

Here is the incubator I'm looking at that this guy is building & selling in Oklahoma. It looks well made & from what he wrote in the ad & in the email to me it sounds like they work well.

The only thing about it is if I get one I would have to buy two more turners because it doesn't come with any. I have one that I'm not using in the incubator I'm using for a hatcher. It's supposed to hold 200 eggs. I would love to have the kind Danz that you & IVY have, but I just can't afford it right now & unless one falls in my lap for a great price I probably won't be able to get one. I'm going to kind of wait & see what they have at the swap meet at Mulvane, because my friend says sometimes they do have them there. I'm hoping to make it to the next swap if I can. It's just not going to be easy because they start that one so darned early in the morning & my 40th class reunion is the night before. I'm still looking for a few rabbit cages too if I can find them cheap.

Danz, I'm sorry to hear about your mom, hugs to you.

ok so here is a photo update, my 3-4 week old babies!!!

Here is Chicklet!

Here is Hellen Keller, My 2 year old calls her honey killer! She is our bantam

Here is Lillith, or Leroy, the jury is still out. Pretty sure its Leroy, but I don't really know what to think.

Here is Susan B Anthony, she is the most skittish!

They are all getting so big, I can't wait to get then into their coop, DH and I are going to be working on it non-stop this week!

Nice meeting you the other day! Glad to know there is someone else in the building that's as crazy as I am!

Cute chicks! Amazing how fast they grow. Not sure what you are doing for a coop, but if you need shingles I have a bunch of them. They were given to me for free for my coop & I've used all I need. I'd be willing to pass them along if you want them. They are a light brown 3 tab shingle & I probably have roughly 2 bundles worth of them. You know where to find me if you' want them. If you don't need them, the same offer is open to anyone else on CK list.

Hello all,

Lillith/Leroy is having diarrhea. Smelly smelly loose diarrhea. I don't know what could or would cause that in a 4 week old chicken, I have given a couple of the freeze dried mealworms, and they went out last weekend, but other than that I am unsure. Should I be worried?

One of my birds has had this problem for a few weeks now. At first they were really runny & REALLY stinky. Now they are more 'normal' but still STINK someting awful. My chicks have been on medicated chick starter from the beginning so I'm not sure what it is either. I've tried the yogurt thing with no luck; they wouldn't eat it. May have to find something I can add to their food. The chick doesn't really seem bothered by it so I just haven't worried about it too much.

It was great meeting you too!!! I could definitely use the shingles, My husband and I are working on the coop right now, we have the base done and 2 of the walls framed, I am trying to convince him that 8x4 would be much better than 4x4, I want room for more just in case!
