Consolidated Kansas

There are so many posts I inteded to reply to, but got so wrapped up in this disaster with the dogs I've just hardly been able to think. Anyway, Hawkeye, congratulations on your new chick. Are you sure the kids aren't shaking that incubator or something?

Danz-glad you are getting things rolling with the construction. Hope all is going well with that.

Trish-Congrats on the cute baby bunnies. On the ameraucanas, my lavenders are definitely lavender when hatched. The blacks are black with white or lighter colored tummies, etc.

Tweety-Glad the one that got picked on is doing okay, but one other thing is kind of important. Be sure you isolate the guilty party, but if one of your birds gets badly pecked or something you will want to isolate or protect that one, too. There is nothing like an open wound to entice the rest of the gang to peck and pick on them.

Karen-How's the hobbling along going? I think I'm doing pretty good right now, but kind of stiff and sore tonight.

If I've missed other questons please forgive me. I'm still so upset it's hard to think straight.

We just got back with a pair of blue slate turkeys. These are the same age as the others. I wanted to get a tom in there with the remaining hen as soon as possible so she didn't take off with some of the wild toms or something. The blues are checking out their new digs right now. I was surpried at how much larger the blues are than the royal palms. I hope I can keep these big guys calm. It looks like they could be a real challenge to handle if they are pretty wild.

I have 5 eggs from the royal palms in the incubator. I hope they all hatch. I guess I can raise some pure blues this year and then hopefully next year I will have my royal palms.

Hey, Ivy, where did you get the blues? Do they have a lot of darker splash spots, or are they more solid blue?

We've been monitoring her and no-one else is picking on her at all. I did put the bluekote on it to protect it - boy that stuff doesn't come off anything. I still have blue fingers and a blue splashed shirt as well. Looked at her tonight when we got home and it's already looking a lot better. No blood to speak of, just raggedy looking broken feathers.

It might be the stress, but for some reason the ducks are refusing to go into the pond. oh well.

IVY, it's strange that every one of the chicks that have hatched so far have been black. Is black dominant or something? I just had another chick hatch in the hatcher downstairs & I can't tell yet for sure what color it is because it's still wet, but it looks like it could possibly be lighter than the rest. I have one other egg pipping today, but it's an Easter Egger. I have people wanting those too, so I had put some in for them. I candled the eggs that are in the hatcher & I doubt that three of them are going to hatch, but we'll see, I was surprised before, so I could be again. IVY, I have Royal Palm eggs in my incubator right now, but they haven't been in there long enough to tell anything at all. I'm going to pick up some more next Weds. when I go to Derby to get my hair cut. There is a guy in north Wichita that has Royal Palms & is selling hatching eggs. I would rather drive up there & pick them up than have them shipped, lower risk that way. He has crossed some Royal Palms also with Bourbon Reds & boy are they beautiful in the pics. He is trying to talk me into some of those, but I don't know, he says they're bigger than the Royal Palms, which I really don't want, I prefer the smaller ones in my situation actually. We don't need huge turkeys here with just the two of us. I don't think there are as many Royal Palms around either as there are other breeds of turkeys. I'm going to have to build a pen just for them. What kind of pen do you have yours in?

This is the Royal Palm/Bourbon Red Crosses he has. I do think they have pretty coloring. I will see them next week when I go pick up the eggs. I have never hatched turkey eggs before, so we'll see how it goes. I have hatched chickens & ducks before but never turkeys. I want to try peacocks too as soon as I can get my hands on some eggs. I definitely need a bigger incubator. I found a guy in Oklahoma that builds them & they look really nice for $200, that sounds like a good deal if they work good.

Oh, yesterday my GP pups were barking at something, so I went out to see what they were barking at. There were wild turkeys over the fence in the neighbor's field & they were barking at them. I guess they didn't think they belonged here, but they're all around us all the time. I hadn't seen so many wild turkeys until I moved here.

Ivy, I'm sooooo sorry about your birds and turkeys that your dog killed! That is incredibly heart breaking that he just won't stop doing it. :( Maybe you can put an ad on Craigslist and say how great he is, but warn people he should not be around poultry or fowl. I'm really more worried about you nearly having that fall and almost breaking your crutch! That sounds REALLY scary!! Which turkeys did he kill?? Was it your new Royal Palms??

Either way, it's terrible and I feel so bad for you.

Checoukan-I got the blue slates from the same lady I got the RP's from. She is also the one we gave the ginger red hen to as a "therapy chicken" for her handicapped daughter. She named the little hen "Pippin." We saw Pippin this afternoon. Boy, you talk about a sweet, spoiled little hen! Rosie, the ones we got appear to be more of the solid blue color. She said she has not had any blacks or splash hatch from these, so maybe these are the strain that breed true.

Trish-I don't think the black is dominant. I have always read that "theoretically" you should get 50-50%black/lavender. I guess it's kind of like roosters and hens. Theoretically you should get 50% of each, but you know how it goes. It always seems like there's too many roosters!

My turkeys are in a very large pen that we had used as a pen for one of our boer bucks and the does that we put with him. There is a metal shed there that is about 12' x 8' or so. I put a roost in there and their food is in there. The pen is not tall, and if their wings weren't clipped they could fly out. The pen is big enough I don't think there is any way I could ever cover the whole thing, so I will have to keep them clipped until I am sure they are going to stick around. Hopefully I will be able to let them free range some day and they should know where their house, food and roost are. I'm not too worried about predators with our 3 GP's. The only problem we have had in that regard is our own dog, Digger, the german wirehaired dachshund, who will be going to a new home soon, one way or another.

Hawkeye-Yes, it was the royal palms. We had one royal palm hen left, and I just added a pair of blue slates so the hen wouldn't be by herself. I couldn't find any mature royal palms in a hurry, so this will be a fun project anyway, and I will have my pure royal palms next year.

Had to show some pictures of Hawkeye's handiwork. Once I figured out how to put it on her, I let my little Brahma hen that had the broken leg model the diaper Hawkeye made. The dark on her head is pine tar. A couple weeks ago I let her out in the yard and the roosters tore a chunk out of her head. No success for a duck diaper but the chicken diaper works great.

I met Josie today. It is always so nice to meet one of you in person!
On a sad note I am a bit in shock. I thought my Mom was doing better and I had relaxed a little about her condition since she had been able to eat again for a couple days. I went to visit her and my Dad was there so I visited with both of them. Nothing seemed amiss.
And then I found out after I left that my oldest sister had taken her to the pulmonary specialist this morning because her oxygen level had dropped so low during her physical therapy. He examined her and told them that it was time to call in Hospice and just make her as comfortable as we could, that her lungs had deteriorated so much. Mom knew and she said nothing. My Dad didn't know, but my sister was going by after work to tell him. I feel like the earth has been ripped out from underneath me. I can only imagine how my dad feels.
My Mom said she was going to beat this thing but my sister said she doesn't think Mom realizes how serious it is at this point. She has fought this thing so long.
I didn't go to town all weekend because I was sure she was doing much better. I guess I had myself convinced she was going to get well.

Oh WOW!! It looks great on her! Fits great too!! I'm so glad it will at least work for injured birds. Just keep it on hand for your roosters or birds that absolutely hate to be confined in the kennel. Best of both worlds! YAY!! Wish I knew how to make a duck diaper!! If I could see a tutorial or pattern I could make it up and send it to you. Let me know if you run across one, and I'll start hunting again, too. I sure thought this was going to be IT.
