OK.... Are those two roosters the same two Hawkeye was selling????
You know, I wondered the same thing.

Grand Champion Rosecomb pullet, Same pullet Overall Grand Champion

Its hot!!!
Congratulations - what an amazing achievement!

OMGosh!!!! THOSE ARE MY roosters!!!!! I sold them for $5 a piece-- they want $40??!! WTH!?!??!?!?!! Those poor boys!!!
OH NO! I did wonder, since they were two white silkie roosters, so soon after you sold yours but then I looked at the price and thought "Surely not, Hawkeye sold them for $5 apiece, where on earth would they get off asking $40 for them".
But... I lost two hens today as well. Found one while Josie was here and the other one just while ago. This d*(&*(($%^* heat!
So sorry about the hens. And isn't it always the way, that its the ones we most care about keeping that go the first?

Ouch - I'm sorry that you are loosing so many birds Danz! :(

I took out the camera tonight and got some pics to share:

My Big girls! :) The all crowd around me when I'm out .

Now... Here's the funny stuff. I refreshed the pool and the ducks always immediately get in.
I've seen the first part of this behavior before and was going to tape it to see if anyone knew what was going on..
but as you'll see at the end of the video, I think my question was answered.

I can't believe how grown up your hens are looking - it seems no time since you were sharing their day-old pictures with us. That ducky dance is very sweet. How old are they? My muscovies are 9 weeks old now but I don't really know how old maturity is in a duck.

Danz-Yes, I have some of the rosecombs. Originally, Checoukan got her rosecombs from me, but that was a number of years ago. She has since added more birds that she got from Rick Hare out of NY. They are awesome little birds. The ones I have now are hatched from Checoukan and Ricks birds.

Oh no!!!! I hoped it was purely coincidental!! No wonder you couldn't understand their correspondence in email... I apologize for laughing at their spelling. I sure dont see any humor in what they did with them. I wonder if they even know that they need to be fed!!! Poor babies! Trish, I am sorry you lost a chick. I have wondered what that kind of chick looks like. They sound extra unique :-( I hope you have more. Danz, I know your granddaughter will treasure the memories of her summer trip to see you :) Not every girl gets to stay at a bird zoo :) and learn all about them :). The dress preference is a nice thing, I think. I loved to dress my girls in dresses when they were little and they both love them still. Won't catch me in one often though:) Sorry the heat is causing you so much loss... This heat wave is merciless. Saphire,I love that splash hen! What breed is that? Wow!!! Grand Champion!!! Congrats!!! Please share a pic! ( sadly, I don't know what a rose comb is) I want to learn :) I am planning on checking out the Douglas County and Shawnee Co poultry shows. Is anyone on here entering in those?

T
his is Jade. The one that I'm wondering if he/she is a roo. Jade's the only one with the comb. These are the blues from Chooks, but Jade also has red/brown splotches.. you can see them in the second pic.

This is Amber, the previously splayed leg chick And this is Amethyst - she's a lot lighter in color than the other two.

So pretty!!!! What is the white one with the black lines on her neck? My crew does the same thing. They must be at my feet. Makes it tough to walk doesn't it:)

medawinks, the chick was one of 4 that I just got from Chooks recently. Josie has some of them & there was a photo several pages back of one of hers. They're a mix of lavender Orpington with porcelain Isabel so they're lavender with cream lacing over their feathers. It made me so sad to lose one already.

This heat is just horrid & it's supposed to get worse by the weekend. I worked out there today on my pen & got everything done except put a tarp over the top. I went ahead & moved birds in there tonight because the grow-out pen was too crowded, but now I'm thinking I may have to move all of those birds into the new pen to try to keep them cooler. It's in the shade & while it's hot everywhere it's still cooler than in that little pen where the chicks are because they don't have much shade there. I just may have to try to make it chick proof by getting some more dirt to put around it & then I will feel safer moving them all in there. I have my older 4 Swedish Flowers in there & I just moved my Cream Legbar chicks out there tonight, so since I have expensive chicks out there I need to make sure they don't overheat or get loose either one. The newest Swedish Flower Hen chicks are still in the utility room in a crate & will be until they get too big for it. My last egg goes into lockdown tomorrow, the Cream Legbar egg that traveled to Dodge City. Oh I hope it hatches, that would be great to at least get one chick for all the trouble I went through to get those darned eggs & the money I spent. After that egg I'm done hatching for this year. If I can just keep the rest of the birds alive through this summer that will be great!

Danz, I'm sorry you're losing birds, we all need to do a rain dance for rain & some cooler air. This summer & last were just awful, but I don't remember it getting so hot so early last year though. I think this year is just even worse.

Thanks! My ducks are about 21 weeks old now. :) They just started this behavior no more than a couple weeks ago.

She is a Delaware. They are very heat and cold hardy and fairly friendly - not as much as my barred rock or buff orpington, but not super skittish. I'm pretty sure it's one of the Delawares that is laying the egg.

We got another good egg this evening! I can't wait till a second one (really all the others) starts laying. Do different breeds start at different times?

I can't remember the brand name but I get mine at Dillons. Maybe Hodgson Mill or something like that? It claims on the bag to be 100% whole grain. I also know a lady in Derby who grinds her own and I've bought several 5lb bags from her, freshly ground, for $3 a bag. I don't get to Derby all that often and its a long drive for flour, but when I know I will be there, I'll give her a call and stop by and get some. If you are ever going to be in Derby, PM me and I'll give you her contact info.

Thanks, I'll do that. I haven't seen it at our Dillons, but I don't go there very often. I'll have to remember to check again.

love all the pictures and i think I'm getting the silkie bug also they are so cute Josie i love the picture of the Silkie/cochin pullets i think they are super cute my son says "Mom i hope your not thinking about getting those kind of chickens they look like mini Sasquatches"

its another hot day when does it start to cool down here in kansas?

Mini Sasquatches -- cute!

Until last year it didn't routinely get THIS hot in Kansas, although we did have many days of 101-103 degrees. We also didn't have those temps for so many days in a row. I think this year may be, or is on track to be, worse than last year. I've had some rough days, but DH and I were just talking about it this evening and we both feel like we haven't been as miserable overall this year as last year. I guess it's early yet ...

I think our Food For Thought and Whole Foods have whole grain flour... actually, I know they do. I just bought Rye flour the other day at the super Dillons-- they have everything there! I'm going to make rye bread and the flour is almost black! It's whole grain, that's for sure! :)

I don't get to Wichita too often, but I'll definitely check those places. I went to Whole Foods when they first opened but didn't think to look for the flour.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! That's great!

Thanks. What makes me angry is that there is no food in that kennel. Poor things. Oh, I am steamed. FEED the dang roosters, people!!!

Hawkeye, here are my lovelies :)

What a beautiful roo.

I just went out earlier to turn on the mister in the grow-out pen & found one of my little lavender Orp/porcelain Isabel chicks dead from the heat, awwhhh I just got those. I guess I'll have to get out there earlier tomorrow to turn the mister on. I've been working my tail off trying to get that other pen done so I can move the bigger chicks out of there & into that one. I'm hoping I can get the dirt moved into the holes & try to get them moved this evening. Even if they don't have a house in there right now I think they would be better off where they have more room. I can at least make them a roost so they can roost off the ground, but they will have to learn to use it first, they haven't had one as of yet. I'm hoping to score a free small dog house to put in there. I have seen several lately, but wasn't able to go get them.

We got the floor painted for the new coop this morning & as soon as I left the area Jasmine went & walked in the wet paint. I told my DH that I knew that they would do that as soon as I left. The other day after we had painted the primer on they walked all over it with muddy feet, so when my granddaughter was here Sunday she went out with grandpa & helped wash it off. She went home & told her mom that she now has a job helping grandpa with the coop. That got a laugh!

I'm sorry about your little chick, and Danz' birds, too. I hope this ends soon.

Dogs are so good at that! They also love to walk in wet cement. What is it with them?!

Danz!!- I put that little polish chick in the brooder with my silkies and lone polish. I have a light turned way down low and the new polish just looked at all the other chicks for the longest time like who are you guys? So I went out and did chores and just checked back in on them and the new polish chick is all cuddled up with my lonely polish! Their little necks are over each other, it is so cute! I wonder how on earth they know they are the same???

I put the rest of the babies, who are super cute, under their new mom in the dark. She is in a vari kennel with food and water. I don't want anything to happen to the babies, they are so tiny! I will see how they are doing tomorrow and maybe in a few days try letting them out. Thanks again!!

Hi to everyone else! Sorry, I will read through posts tomorrow and reply better but still have to feed dogs and water the plants!

Sapphire, I meant to tell you your marans are beautiful, I love the splash hen! I have a roo just like that, his name is Rusty & he is getting just huge. I got him to go with my BC Marans hens because the roo I had died. My marans hens are looking really ragged right now due to the heat, in fact all of my adult hens look pretty ragged right now, this summer isn't doing them any favors for sure. I just hope they all make it through it.
