Consolidated Kansas

milomac,

Danz, I saw that LGD advertised too, and you can always tell the people that got them to guard their poultry flocks and it didn't work out. I'm sorry you're having problems with CL. Have you tried posting it in the Wichita CL or just the one up near you? Yep, it was a little chilly to be working outside yesterday but I just really wanted to make some progress. I had started it earlier last week and then for 3 days couldn't make any progress because I had so many other things I needed to get done. So I had promised myself to try and knock most of the rest of it out this weekend so even though it was cold, I just put on my Carhartt and got out there. With lifting and carrying long boards and heavy tools, I actually stayed pretty comfortable.

Unfortunately when I started to write the post last night, DH came in and reminded me it was time for us to leave as we had dinner plans with friends so I very hastily uploaded the photos and hit submit but didn't have time to add any commentary. Not that there is much that needs to be added except....you might notice that the boards for the door frame all look a little different and one is literally charred on the end? Well, that is recycling at its finest. When we moved here, the previous owners had a huge "burn" pile out in the pasture but when I started to look through it, I found some retrievable lumber. DH shook his head as I hauled the lumber I thought I could use (including a board that had been burned on one end but still had some usable length to it) up to our workshop and stacked it. There were none that were full-length but they turned out to be perfect for this job as I didn't need them to be 8' long. I did cut a little off each of the two verticals so they would be the same length as each other and I considered cutting the charred end off the horizontal but I decided to leave it on as a reminder of its origins. We'll call it "character".

On today's task list: cover the back end with welded wire, add 2' chicken wire around the inside of the entire thing, and build and hang the gate. I already have everything I need, including a tarp so it should be ready for habitation really soon.

Hawkeye, while I was building one of the silkies was underfoot the entire time! She has become super oriented to me lately for some reason and comes running whenever she sees me. So with me working right there in the yard all afternoon, she wanted to be as close to me as she could get - which was underfoot. As endearing as that is, I had to keep moving her because I didn't want to drop a heavy board on her or step on her. So I spent the afternoon picking her up and moving her across the yard, only to turn around a few minutes later and trip over her again. At one point I had to go up and get something from the shop, and of course she was right there at my feet, so I picked her up and carried her all the way to the shop and back. She chattered away non-stop the whole time. Now who couldn't love that? Here she is (the one in front):

Oh what a chilly day it was yesterday!! DH had to go to a sale, and buy a tractor, and now we have to go back up and pick it up. It going to be over wideth, and I have to gather up the over load sign up, and get it on the truck

He is taking care of the water plant, and feeding cows. Then we have to get the truck and trailer ready to go. Its going to be a long day.

Danz, I did not do much, Ivy has the sebbies right now, we took them over to her last evening. They really need a bath tub, but I know they weill shine right back up, Cance said they had been playing in a mud hole

Silly geese. I guess he told you the goose has the green band on her leg.

My little hen is doing better, she is not wet back behind, and is drinking and eating . She is still real weak, but I have seen some poop. The first was like black shiny tar, and then it turned more of a normal texture, but green with white caps. I am going to continue with a half of a cc of red cell. I still have her in a taxi in the house. I don't think she would do well out in the barn yet, and I sure do not want to loose her.

Ivy gave me some netting that is going over the top of the new runs for my large fowl. I have been waiting to let them out, but I did not want them to fly out and mix, as they have been being kept separate. I am hoping they will start laying soon, and I can get some chicks going. The barn is just taking too long, and I just have to get busy barn ready or not.

Well I better get busy, I hope everybody has a good day and get out side and soak up some sun. Smile this is the day the lord has made!!!!

HEChicken- the girls need saddles because the boys are tearing their backs up. This will give them time to heal and not be so timid of the boys.
I have my boy issue solved and need to find someone to take a couple so that the girls can get a break.

I am going to try another add HEchicken. I had just put one in the Kansas City area. I have some ideas. I'd like to put one in Wichita as well but that is 2 1/2 hours away so that might not work. It is ridiculous. And you can't duplicate adds either. I don't know how some people get away with it. I don't run a puppy mill. I think I provide a service when I do offer pups. And this litter wasn't planned. I didn't intend to have one for another year or so. I will probably only breed Cloud one more time before I get her fixed anyway. I'm not in the dog business. I just need to assure I have some dogs ready to protect the birds and any other livestock I end up with.
I should get moving but really am not anxious to get outside yet. I ducked out of church today so I could get chickens corralled for tomorrow but haven't been out yet.
I tried to get some feedback from DH on a building package last night but he just closed his mind. He wasn't hearing how I wanted to hire someone to build it. He was just thinking in terms of work on his part. I even offered to build him a building and build a bird facility out of my barn. If I just knew I could find someone to build it without charging a fortune I would buy one anyway. It's my land and my money so It's not like it is going to cost him anything. He made a really dumb statement. He said we were running out of real estate. I reminded him I have 20 acres to build on and lots of that isn't getting me anything in return. My farner hays it and I don't use the hay any more since I don't have goats. DH only seems to think of the area right by the house. So I guess I will have to continue to hope he does something so I can continue with the trailer breeding facility. I honestly thought sure he would prefer to keep things in a nicer building if he wasn't open to me having a good all in one setup.
Maybe next time they have a sale I can do something.
Yes Checoukan you did help me out. You were the link that completed the chain. I'll make sure the goosies have a good bath in their new digs. Mine look pretty awful right now too. They are making mud puddles while they flumsy around trying to figure out how to breed. I like them so much better when they stay beautiful and white.

Well my son & grand daughter just left, so now I have to get around so I can make a run to get some supplies i need for my gates. I'm still not sure how I'm going to make them work to secure them on the non-hinge side since I'm dealing with t-posts. I could barely pound in the t-posts by myself, so there was no way I could put in anything bigger.

The one baby goat is doing well, eating & everything, but the little boy won't eat so far, I don't know if he's going to make it or not. The little girl just slurps down the milk, the the boy just chews on the nipple. I will hate it if he dies on me. Checoukan you have goats don't you? Do you have any tips for us to get this little guy eating? I think the guy lied to my friend about how old they all really were & he didn't make it right after she told him the other two died. They're so stinking cute! I have to run some straw out to Sunflower's place after while for them to bed down in. We borrowed a calf hut from her friend for now until I can get them something built at my place. They're in her barn.

Well better get moving, lots to try to get done today while it's warmer.

Trish do you have some colostrum? You need to get some down him...even if you have to use a tube to do it. It also helps to sqeeze the bottle so the milk comes out in his mouth, and or make larger holes in the nipple.

Hi all. I've been busy putting all my toys away in my craft room. It's all nice and tidy so I can start messing it up again! Ha! I moved some things around, too. The incubator is where I can get to it a bit easier. I'm testing my styros to see if they are going to hold temp. I replaced the wafer in the old one because it seemed a little funky, it may have just been missing plugs, I don't know. I got extra plugs and a new plastic and wire inserts for it. I think it will be good to go. We'll see. Then I moved my exercise equipment where I can have a good view of the TV while I exercise. You notice I didn't say, if I exercise. I have a fan, a tv, a mat, an eliptical and a weight set. There are no excuses left, are there?

We got a teeny, tiny little pullet egg from the Swedish pen today, so cute. Then we got another dark Cayuga egg. It's fun for the kids to find the eggs. It kind of looks like a rock, doesn't it?

Danz, your internet has been such a mess. I'm sorry it's been such a pain. We've been much happier with ours since we switched to Pixius. I don't know if that has anything to do with it -- I only know enough to get online.

It's so odd you're having a hard time selling your pups. Must be a combination of the crazy economy and drought.

Trish, I hope you've gotten you goat troubles solved by now. You and Danz are in the same boat with Murphy's Law all over you guys. I can't stand that Murphy guy -- he sure messes things up.

trudigale, hi! Welcome back.

that is a beautiful egg. Is this from a duck or chicken? sorry if its a silly question

DH and I worked at putting some fencing up. My first time trying to pound post . We bought some mini donkeys back in December and i thought the female was expecting and when the trainer came to pick up my paint for training she confirmed it she said it looks like we got maybe 30-40 days left. So we worked on section off an area for her to foal in and still be safe. I'm tired

I'm sorry it didn't work out today, but I do think Sutherlands has these sales from time to time. I think I remember Josie saying she was able to get a really good deal on a similar package at Sutherlands. The way I look at it, is "will it increase the value of my property to put this in?" It seems to me like a nice barn is going to increase the value more than a bunch of smaller coops/runs, because it has multiple potential uses.

Congrats on the mini donkeys. Did you get them for pets or as livestock guardians? If you are going to be pounding a bunch of posts (are we talking t-posts here?) you might find it worthwhile to invest in a post pounder. It makes the job a lot easier and there is less risk of getting hurt.

Well, I didn't make as much progress on my hoop coop as I thought I might today. I went out and started working on it but then my horse called and said it is a shame not to get out on such a beautiful day. I couldn't help but agree so I went and rode him for a couple of hours. What I did get done came out well though so I'm looking forward to working on it some more this week.

Oh, I saw the funniest sight tonight. My little Serama rooster, who until now has not shown much interest in the ladies, finally decided it was time. So he picked a hen, she squatted, and he jumped aboard. He grabbed her by the neck feathers and wiggled about doing his thing. So if he managed to fertilize the eggs, can we call the offspring of a Serama and a duck a "Seramack"? (Say it fast.)

ChickenDanz - how much do you ask for your pyrs? I'm not ready for one yet - not till after our move, but I will be wanting to get a female as a mate to Danny (6 months now) before long. I imagine you mention specifics somewhere, but I haven't been keeping up - making trips over to the new place and working there nearly every day - took the day off today, so I'm trying to get a bit caught up.

Also, about the structure you wanted built, wondered if you have any Amish near you? The Amish are building for me and doing repairs on the house on the new place. They do really good work, have a much better work ethic than most "English" (their term) crews, and are honest. If they say something needs being done, it does - though they will usually give you options about more and less effective/permanent and more and less expensive ways to get the job done. If they can't consider what you think you want to be a workable solution, they won't take the job. Our crew charge 13 bucks an hour, or will offer a bid if you want that. But they locally have gotten the reputation that they do such good work so cost effectively, that it is cheaper to hire them by the hour than by a bid - as they have to leave room in a bid for "what-if"s. They don't "milk" the by the hour option, so its better to go that route. If you're wanting a building built that could be transported, and can arrange the transportation of it, my local Amish friends could and would build you something. You could send me a private message with your phone number, and I'd have Noah give you a call next time he is over to use the phone. Just let me know.... Might help to also send specifics about what you are looking to have built, so he could look it over before calling, and be able to give you an idea of how many hours and how much materials might be involved. I doubt they would want to come all the way up to your place - they are working on my place because we are friends and current neighbors. But usually they wouldn't go as far as my place for a job.
