Consolidated Kansas

I got up at 4:30 and need to get moving. I've got to get in the shower and catch and load 3 sabastopols in cages and get on the road in the next 45 minutes for Gardner with them. Nothing like rushing around in the dark. I tried to get them done yesterday and was outside all afternoon but it was still after 11:00 PM when I got done, then another hour to get to bed. I should be pleasant today!
I had my second turkey poult hatch but it's flipping around. Not sure why... the turkeys have had no change in diet or nutrition. It doesn't act healthy at all and is gasping a little. I would rather it just die than suffer any. It was hatched last night. One of the hens was trying to act broody yesterday. I had to come back and get her eggs when I went out the second time to check their feed.
After I get back home today I have to get the wild turkeys caught and caged and cage up all my diamond doves to take to Gardner in the morning. Those wilds will probably try to beat me to death.
Well I'd better get moving. Just had to share my first cup of coffee with you all.

It looks like a milk container??? What is that?? Then they cut it open and put a gate on it... I would love to know where to get one of those! That is neat!
Hawkeye - we have a few of those containers and they're great for a shelter for just about anything that would fit. We will use ours for transporting broilers to my friend's house come butchering day. What they are is a container for rail lubricant. The lubricant is oil-based but it is non-toxic and the label has all the health/environmental information on it. All the numbers are 0 or 1 concerning health, environmental and safety.

My BF picked me up two of them from someone in Haysville - I think he paid $20/$25 each for them. They are HEAVY - there is an attached metal pallet on the bottom of them and there was some liquid left in the container too - The hut Trish is using is my friend's hut - they cut the entire bottom out so the bottom of the hut is completely open. My friend has about 30+ of these huts because they raise bottle calves.

Hi everybody, have not been on for a while.

I have a question, I ordered 8 baby silkies from a private party. I just received them yesterday through the mail. They are about 4 weeks old. They are beautiful and appear to be very active and healthy. At least two of them have bare butts and bellies, all the others appear to have baby fluff in those places. All of them are at various stages of feathering out.

Is this just part of the growing process or is this an indication of something being wrong with them?

I am sooooo happy! I have no chicks in the house! They are all outside, at least for now.
YAY!

Now for my latest pondering. My Buff Bhrama Bantam that has been hanging out in the garage has been a consistent layer. She has also been broody and really gets mad when I stick my hand in to fetch her egg. If I am not fast I get pecked. So here is my thought. When she lays an egg, could I turn out the lights reach in, grab the egg and replace the egg with a bantam chick? Would she accept it as her own? Has anyone tried this? Thoughts?
Sounds like a plan to me! I've not tried it though.

Sorry about your poult. Down sizing on the wilds and the doves, hu? Good with getting them sold for a good price! Hopefully someone "just has to have them"!

Well, I shouldn't be trying to buy anything else right now, but I'm going to keep that in mind! Thank you for telling me what they are! They are so neat!

They are not supposed to be bare at all. That doesn't sound right. But no, it's not a growing process they go through. I've hatched and grown lots of silkies and never have seen that.

Been busy, busy, busy! We started filling our POD yesterday. Ugh. Oh what fun! (not.) Can't wait for the flooring guys to have everything ripped out and get everything in. We're picking out our tile today for the kitchen and bathrooms. Should be fun! The rest of the flooring will be picked out today too, but I'm more excited about our tile choices. Our Spring break is this coming week, so at least we can all sleep in a bit -- at least later than 6am.

Help! I'm shopping for three new chicks in Wichita because our two remaining three-year-old hens have quit laying. I REALLY want at least one Plymouth Barred Rock this time, and neither Atwood's nor Tractor Supply has any right now. Where else can I get baby chicks in or near Wichita?

Wow! I step away for a bit and the posting marathon continues!

WichitaKidd - Nice chicks! Good luck on this batch.

Deerfield - One of the SSXs has gone all broody on me. She hasn't laid in a couple of days, but is always in the nesting box. She gets really ****** off at me when I reach in to check underneath her.

Not an expert here, but, if she is laying eggs, she is NOT broody. Broodies usually do not lay eggs. I would also make a guess that a broody hen would have had to sit on eggs for a period of time for her to accept chicks. Not sure of that and all hens are different.

Where did the chick you want to put in the nest come from/how old is it? If it is more than a day or so old, then success even put into a nest with a broody is not likely as the chick would probably not accept the hen. Timing is a big part of the process.

If you can't find what you want in Wichita, you might try calling Orshelens in Wellington and/or Arkansas City - I know it's a little of a drive though... good luck!

I hate moving! Hopefully the POD will make it easier. I love tile floors! Have fun today!

If you know where an Orschelyn's is close by you might check there, they usually have Barred Rocks. I love those birds too, they're just laying machines. Other than that, just watch Craigslist, you might find some on there or also the local CO-OPs a lot of times do order in chicks for people & end up with a few extras that aren't picked up. Those are just some ideas. Then there is also the Buy, Sell, Trade area on BYC where there are ads for chicks on there if you don't mind having them shipped, but of course you would have to pay shipping.

Hawkeye, good luck on getting your floors done, that will be nice when it's finished. Are you doing the countertops in the kitchen too? It's just too bad you have to do the remodeling to move, it would be nicer if you could do it & stay

. Hey I had a hen last night when I went out to put everybody in that was gasping for air & I just figured she wouldn't make it through the night, but she did & looks somewhat better today. What would you treat them with, I figure I better treat them all now because she's been in with my whole laying flock. I have Tylan & I have Sulmet & I can't remember right now what other one I have. I left the coop door open last night to let more fresh air in & all the windows because the ammonia is getting strong in there, this may be the issue & not any other illness. I started cleaning my coop out yesterday, but only got about half way with taking the old bedding out. I will go out again after while & continue with shoveling it out. I'm thinking the extra fresh air helped this hen & that's why she's better today. What do you all think? I guess I'll just try to get all the old bedding out, I've been needing to do this because it has built up pretty high over the winter, but was waiting for this warmer weather to do it. I normally use the DLM & clean it out every 6 months & I can usually tell by the end of that time that it's time to do it.

The little goats are doing well today. I took my DH out with me to feed little Penny her bottle this morning, he got a kick out of that. She is so darned cute, you can't help but fall in love with her. She follows you around like a little puppy. She yelled really loud when we walked away after feeding her & Patches came over to see what was wrong with her, that was cute.
