Consolidated Kansas

Well, since only discussions about chicks that include pictures count, I won't tell anyone about the bundle of super cute little chicks I got this morning plus the equally cute packing peanuts that were in the box with them.

How can packing peanuts be so cute (and eat so much)?

The trip into town did show how much rain we got here. Casper (a local pond that looks like Casper the friendly ghost) was not only full, but there was a lot of water coming out of the spill way. I have not seen it full since I have lived out here and it was very close to totally dry last fall. Water was standing on some fields also. More rain is supposed to be coming in a few days. Are we going to start getting floods? The bradford pear trees in town were so pretty in full bloom. The concentration of blooming plants in town is always so nice to see after the nothing out here. Just fields and pasture here.

We went to Orscheln today to get dog food and of course I HAD to go look at the chicks. Chicken math sucks today; I have nowhere I could put more chickens so all I could do was look. Sigh.
My sympathies.

What a coincidence about the guy who bought your Alohas, if he is the one I'm thinking of he bought a SFH rooster from me. I steered him your way for the ducks from the KS Poultry Swap.

I don't want to be a downer, but I don't think your life will slow down until your kids are grown & gone from home. Congrats on the new computer!

The Ameraucanas are from my birds that were hatched last year for my lavender Ameraucana program. They come from the Jean Ribbick line if anybody wants to know that.
Well, bless your heart for helping me out! Plus, we had such a fun time talking Alohas. He saw how my kids are and offered them FREE riding lessons in exchange for helping with the work in caring for them. He lives really close too. My kids are all over that! What a fabulous opportunity!

Regarding your 2nd paragraph: What a buzz kill, but you make a very good point!

My "new" computer isn't exactly brand new. Mine had just about had it and I didn't want to lose everything so hubs traded it in for one with this guy who just upgrades and resells laptops. It only cost $150 with the trade in. I was too happy about that! So if anyone needs a new laptop, I wouldn't. This is our 3rd laptop from him and they are great.

Thanks for the line info, too!

mrs broody pants and her 4 chicks are doing good and the 5 i have in the brooder our doing good also i guess 9 out of 12 is not bad for shipped eggs.

I was looking at pictures and Dh walked in asked what i was doing i told him im learning how to build a chicken run. He asked why did i need to learn how to build one. I asked him if he could keep and eye on kids while i build the run and he laughed and said okay i will help you build your chicken run

. I hoping we can get started in the next few days if not i will have to wait til i come home from my little trip from texas.

Stay warm everyone

You go, girl! He's a keeper for sure!

I have also noticed that even though my husband is a carpenter by profession, I have to make sure I brag about the things he builds, otherwise he thinks I don't appreciate it. So don't forget to do some bragging to build up his ego!
Yup, I do the same thing for my DH. I'm the same way. If he brags on me a little, I'm happy as a clam.

Holy Carp!

Which one of you no-for-goods ordered this wretched weather? I'm done with it. you hear me?

Done!

It's awful.

(sitting in the corner, pouting)

furthermore, it grates me to no end that it's impossible to have correct spacing, capitalization & whatnot on my phone. it won't allow me to correct it! I'm a bloody editor! I can't handle this!

(drops phone, walks away)
"IT WAS ME" she says with an evil laugh. Bwah ha ha ha ha ha... We shall see if you're done with it or not, won't we? Poor dear, I don't have those lack of editing phobias, I just blunder on.

So, why don't you take a day off and go with us to Frank's? It would be so much fun to have you along. I may have to re-nickname my van from The Happy Bus (dubbed in 2002 when purchased new as a clue to the children) to The Party Bus and paint it in psychedelic colors. Or, in Guatemala their public buses are nicknamed The Chicken Bus because people are allowed bring their live chickens and whatnot with them. They are wildly colorful. I may prefer The Chicken Bus name and colorscheme, now that I think about it.

RoosterLew don't worry about offending this group! We all want pictures. Love pictures!
Michelleml congrats on winning your DH over. Just don't push too hard. We've all been through the spouse routine. Even the guys who's wives don't want anything to do with chickens or don't understand why they take the time they do.
Hechicken I just realized that one of your multis didn't attach a day or two ago. You saw a lot more of Frank's farm than I did. He was just telling Karen and I about the leghorns and I think there were some of them in the big barn we were in. It would be hard to tell them apart from white jersey giants just because they were all white. I didn't see the brooder either. I was just picking up older birds I reserved with him and my turkey Tom, and Karen got a hen. I forgot all about the dark cornish too.
He was telling us the barn with the birds in it was going to be full of several thousand turkey poults soon. That might be what you are calling the cull barn... I'm not sure. I really didn't want to take too much of his time. I would love to take a full blown tour at some point.
Chooks I am certainly not the one that ordered this stinking weather!!! I hate hate hate it. As if I am not far enough behind already this just makes it worse.
X2 RoosterLew, we explain a lot but aren't offended. You're good.

HEChicken and Danz, I forgot to chime in on this too, but there were "Leggerns"
smile.png
in the grow out building. I remember him pointing them out to Danz and I and saying they were some of the few real ones left. Those white Jersey Giants were magnificant creatures.

...
Anyway, I need to get outside and take care of the crew and then head into town to run nine million errands. Hope everyone has a good day and stays warm!
Hope you have fun with your nine million errands. I don't have to do those today and it feels so great.

That's as far as I got.

Congrats on the arrival of the chicks - what breeds did you get (sorry if you already told us and I forgot). I'm still waiting on mine that were shipped yesterday

That is great that Casper is so full. I don't think we've had near as much rain in this neck of the woods so I'm glad to hear there's more on the way.

That's a great idea! I second the name The Chicken Bus!

I must have been in information overload by the time we got to that barn

I got an email from Ideal at 6:10pm last night saying my chicks had shipped. Does anyone know...does this mean they didn't ship until evening, or that they shipped earlier but the email wasn't sent out until evening? I talked to them this morning and they indicated they were scheduled for delivery today but shortly after that call the mail came and it was only a few envelopes. I'm biting my nails a little hoping they're okay after the winter storm.

I'm the guy that bought the Alohas that didn't make the cut. So I guess I will have to make do with the B team. Yes I have beautiful, sweet, horses. They have all been rescued, just like most of my roosters. I do barter riding lessons for stuff. I really need a massage therapist on a weekly basis. I don't just teach riding, I teach horsemanship. In other words how to think and see the world like a horse. I am not a cowboy, I'm not that macho. I guess you could call me a chicken wrangler or a duck wrangler.

Good job on getting your DH to help!

I couldn't agree with you more. It's April; doesn't everyone know it's time to switch to gardening weather???

Isn't that neat!
I know how you feel. I want to TSC and looked at the chicks, they are so darling. What really gets me now is the goslings though. Now that I have geese I just love their babies!!! But I don't need a bunch of brown africans running around around and I just keep reminding myself "Pools in winter, pools in winter."

LOL! Every time I think ducks are so cute I should have some, I remember how much more maintenance is involved than for chickens. My niece is constantly cleaning out soaked bedding and dirty pools and having to go shoo the ducks in for the night.

Anyway, I need to get outside and take care of the crew and then head into town to run nine million errands. Hope everyone has a good day and stays warm!

Have fun. I, for some idiotic reason, did all my errand running in the cold yesterday.

What were you selling in Afton Ralph? Im taking some bucklings to the McCune sale
I had several trios. SLW's, EE"S, Silkies, several adult Muscovy's, And a pair of year old Peacocks. I took my Nubian buckling to Turkey Creek, east of Joplin, MO, last Saturday. The goats sold, but not much else. There were more vendors than buyers. Chicks were selling at $1.00 and less. Pyrenees 8 week old pups were selling at $50.00 each. The cold wind had a lot to do with people turning out at the swap.

from another Aloha Kansan. Actually, that's not technically true yet. The first chicks to get my Aloha project started should have arrived today but didn't so I'm getting really worried about them.

I don't keep water in the coop so I don't have the issue with soaked bedding. Feed in the coop, water outside, and it works great. I also don't provide them with a pool. I had a wading pool last summer for them to cool off in (chickens and ducks) but put it away so it wouldn't freeze and crack over the winter. I use the big rubber bowls for some of my water, and the ducks can get their whole beak wet in those to clean out their nostrils. Otherwise, when the want to go for a swim, the females fly down to the pond or hop over the fence to the lagoon. The males are too large to take off so when I open the gate in the afternoons for free range time, they hike down to the pond

They LIKE to swim. They don't NEED to.

It's been so long since we've had any of that that I'm not sure I remember what it is! Enjoy it! There are still many of us here in KS that are so dry we'd be thrilled to get even a half an inch.

I have one Polish Crested pullet and she is nothing what I thought she would be like. Right now my coop is rooster heavy, I have three roosters and 2 pullets. She rules the roosters and they are so much bigger than she is. She does not let them near her. She is the first one out of the coop in the morning and the first one to investigate anything, She is just full of personality and always has us laughing. I am also getting about 5 eggs a week from her.
I have 3 guineas, 2 roosters and 22 hens in my coop right now - but will be adding another 20 hens (I think? I lost count..) in a few more weeks. These little Polish Crested won't be ready for the main coop for a few more months.. I'm hoping nobody picks on their odd heads! My flock is really friendly and I'll make sure to give them the "be nice to the new comers" lecture :) 5 eggs is a great number too!

Cherwill- Yes it is autoimmune. Its a pretty nasty disease. Alot of things trigger it to respond and it is different in everyone so there is no telling when or how bad or how long a flare will be. The best thing is learning to cope and learning what to do and what NOT to do when a flare happens. The pain is extreme and cripling at times but that also is something to deal with I am pretty good at focusing and dealing with it. You also have to listen to pain and slow down when it gets overwhelming. There is still alot of things I need to learn how to deal with but I have been researching and talking with different doctors. I want to learn to cope so I can focus on my family and be happy with them for however much longer my life has. Thank you for the support,it helps to know others with auto immune diseases because I only have one other that I know on line that has Lupus. I think the more poeple that know what I am going through the better. That way I can talk to them and they understand.

I know what it's like to be in pain every day too, I have arthritis & fibromyalgia & possibly some other autoimmune things that I deal with all the time. You just have to do what you can on the bad days & when you have a good day you can do more. It's just hard on the good days to not go overboard & then pay for it. Any time I have had to have surgery it's harder for me to recover because the physical therapists can't push me like they can other people due to my fibromyalgia, if they push too hard I have a setback & have to start over, so it's frustrating. Hang in there & just do things at your own pace. I know for me stress is a big factor in my health so I try to keep my life as calm as I can. It doesn't always work, but I do try to fill my life with things that make me happy like my chickens & animals. They have a calming effect on me & being outside when the weather is decent also helps. There is just something about being out in the middle of nature to make you feel better.
Thank you. Yes stress is one of the big things that effects the disesase. It can cause flares and lots of extra pain. I try hard to stay calm but it is hard. I do have fibro and arthritis as a result of the lupus and I know that is terrible to deal with. Being with my animals and outside doing what I love like gardening or just taking a walk in the woods is so peaceful and calming. Cold weather makes it worse of course and you know how that is. I am looking forward to warm weather...
