Consolidated Kansas

Congrats on your birds, Trish. Maybe they'll be here tomorrow!!!
Chooks, Frank has New Hampshires, Barred rocks, and some of the only existing pure white leghorns in the U.S. Let's see. What else am I forgetting. There is another big white chicken that I'm drawing a blank on.
Then he has the most magnificent heritage turkeys. Bourbon Red, White Holland, and bronze. I'm sure there is much more but I'm brain dead. I so envy his setup.I would never want that many birds. (Can you believe that even came from my mouth???)
I just got an email from Marc Sacre which I've waited on for months telling me he had a juvenile pair of english white orps availble. I had to decline them because of my sick birds. Dang it! Makes me very very disappointed.
I'm soooo going to Frank's soon! Gotta get a look at that kind of set-up...I don't know that I need anything but better stripes in a project (Who me?? A project?? NAW!!) but it'd be great to gab with someone like him.

Sorry about the White Orps...I bet Marc would let you wait a bit.

Now, now, Trish!! Be nice! Folks new to the thread don't know whether we're serious or not and might run away! I missed it- what birds did you get from Tennessee?

I pop on from time to time. Been busy lately. Had an ER visit in Chesterfield, Mo while on a business trip and then spent last night dodging tornadoes! The ER visit is a bit of a story, but I am feeling a little bit better. I will go into it more later.

Soooo sorry you got forced to the ER!! Hope you are doing well, and I'll pray for your healing.

hey guys still around picked up several large limbs brought down by the ice. A friend of mine raises large giant cochins and lost her rooster. Does anybody have a giant black cochin rooster

ICE??!! EEEEEEEK!!!!!!! No bad words like that, please. I only have banty Cochins- sorry...anyone else?

They will be here tomorrow. I got my message on tues night and the birds were at my local post office at 7:30 thurs morning. I just assumed that they sent out the email the night before they actually shipped.

I had forgot how fast chicks grow! They are doing well and have their wing feathers and tails and are starting on their back feathers already. We ended up losing a Delaware and a leghorn. I'm not sure why though. One day they were fine and the next one was too weak to stand and died in a couple hours. Same thing happened to the other chick the next day. No sign of illness or injury and they were eating and drinking like nothing was wrong earlier in the day. The other chicks are healthy and happy.
I wish that were the case, but when they called me a few weeks ago, they gave me a ship date of the 10th, and when I talked to them this morning, they confirmed that the chicks shipped yesterday. At the time I hadn't sent the email as it was filtered to my trash but I later found it and was surprised to find it had been sent so late in the day. Its possible your chicks were actually in transit most of two days, and in that case, I'm glad to hear they made it fine. I'm sorry about the loss of the two - if they were in transit for two days during a winter storm, it could just be shipping stress. Hopefully the rest will be okay now.

any photo's.. I dont know what they look like.. < guess i could google them..but your chicks are cut e'er I"m sure!! even the b team.. ; ) >
They look really good! I think as long as you don't pass off someone else's photo as your own, you're probably all right. Best is if you can actually reference whose photo it is and that you have permission to use it. Worst is when you post a photo and claim it is your own intellectual property.

Pikeman, so sorry about your ER visit - that is the worst, in my opinion - I avoid hospitals whenever possible.

Okay, folks, I am seeking input on a non-chicken matter. DS just informed me that each player has to take their turn bringing food for the whole team to eat in between games (every game is a double header). The reason he was telling me? To introduce the idea to me that "the boys on my team aren't the kind of people who eat wheat bread" (normally the fare involves sandwiches). My response to that was "well, if they're hungry enough...." and he said, "no, please, they'll take it out on me". So here is my dilemma. I don't like to even buy white bread - it goes against everything I believe about nutrition. But I don't want my son to be known as the kid who brings the "weird" food either. So I'm thinking to do something other than sandwiches and that is where I need ideas. What I'm picturing is a little lunch box type of thing that is easy to just pass one out to each kid. It will contain a boxed juice (100%), probably a piece of fruit, and then something substantial enough to satisfy a hungry teenage boy, yet nutritious enough I don't feel guilty serving it. Any and all ideas gratefully received. (Oh - we don't have a date when we need to bring food yet - I just thought I'd start planning now so I'll be ready when it is our turn.)

Sorry to hear you had to go to the ER. Hope you are okay. You didn't drink too much of your beer and fall down did you?

So, why don't you take a day off and go with us to Frank's? It would be so much fun to have you along. I may have to re-nickname my van from The Happy Bus (dubbed in 2002 when purchased new as a clue to the children) to The Party Bus and paint it in psychedelic colors. Or, in Guatemala their public buses are nicknamed The Chicken Bus because people are allowed bring their live chickens and whatnot with them. They are wildly colorful. I may prefer The Chicken Bus name and colorscheme, now that I think about it.

Chicken Bus has it! You need some of those peel on/off graphics so you could be chicken bus some days and Mom on others.
Congrats on the arrival of the chicks - what breeds did you get (sorry if you already told us and I forgot). I'm still waiting on mine that were shipped yesterday

That is great that Casper is so full. I don't think we've had near as much rain in this neck of the woods so I'm glad to hear there's more on the way.
I had ordered from Ideal a couple times and my chicks have always taken two days. But they arrive healthy for the most part.
I'm the guy that bought the Alohas that didn't make the cut. So I guess I will have to make do with the B team. Yes I have beautiful, sweet, horses. They have all been rescued, just like most of my roosters. I do barter riding lessons for stuff. I really need a massage therapist on a weekly basis. I don't just teach riding, I teach horsemanship. In other words how to think and see the world like a horse. I am not a cowboy, I'm not that macho. I guess you could call me a chicken wrangler or a duck wrangler.
Welcome! I think you'll fit right in. Many horse people here of which I am not the rest are bird people. I've got lots of ducks.......and chickens....and ...

I had several trios. SLW's, EE"S, Silkies, several adult Muscovy's, And a pair of year old Peacocks. I took my Nubian buckling to Turkey Creek, east of Joplin, MO, last Saturday. The goats sold, but not much else. There were more vendors than buyers. Chicks were selling at $1.00 and less. Pyrenees 8 week old pups were selling at $50.00 each. The cold wind had a lot to do with people turning out at the swap.
I had thought about driving down there to do a duck trade. Too many other things going on. I think the weather probably hurt sales a lot.

Cherwill- Yes it is autoimmune. Its a pretty nasty disease. Alot of things trigger it to respond and it is different in everyone so there is no telling when or how bad or how long a flare will be. The best thing is learning to cope and learning what to do and what NOT to do when a flare happens. The pain is extreme and cripling at times but that also is something to deal with I am pretty good at focusing and dealing with it. You also have to listen to pain and slow down when it gets overwhelming. There is still alot of things I need to learn how to deal with but I have been researching and talking with different doctors. I want to learn to cope so I can focus on my family and be happy with them for however much longer my life has. Thank you for the support,it helps to know others with auto immune diseases because I only have one other that I know on line that has Lupus. I think the more poeple that know what I am going through the better. That way I can talk to them and they understand.

Thank you. Yes stress is one of the big things that effects the disesase. It can cause flares and lots of extra pain. I try hard to stay calm but it is hard. I do have fibro and arthritis as a result of the lupus and I know that is terrible to deal with. Being with my animals and outside doing what I love like gardening or just taking a walk in the woods is so peaceful and calming. Cold weather makes it worse of course and you know how that is. I am looking forward to warm weather...
Hope today is a better day.

Oh man that really bites. Luckily we missed most of the ice. I have giant cochins and a black roo but I'm not giving him up. Maidenwolf has one of his boys.

How about creating some small roll ups. You could use flour tortillas and fill them with some shaved meat, pieces of chicken or whatever you had, lettuce and mayo or ranch dressing. Easy peasy. Or you could fill them with anything for that matter. I even eat them with peanut butter and jelly sometimes. You can buy a big package of them on the cheap and it doesn't take that much to fill them.
I got one dead pullet packaged and shipped to K-State today for a necropsy. Hopefully they'll identify the illness and I will know what to do. I had three more birds die today. Some of them appear to be coming out of it and getting well. Others are not doing well at all. Luckily it is still confined to that one pen. I pray it stays there and goes away.
I am so fed up with people. I found Rufus, my crested Cayuga drake dead on the side of the road in front of the house. He had been hit by a vehicle. Anyone that lives around here knows I have birds and dogs, but people who don't live on this road go speeding by like it is a raceway. I have no idea why they even get on this road. There is a paved road a mile south that would be much better to travel on. I've just had enough loss for awhile!
I drove to town to mail my chicken and pick up some scripts at the drug store. Then I went by to see my Dad. It is so good to be able to talk to him again. He still doesn't hear well and you have to talk slow but it sure beats writing my thoughts on a white board. Next week my sister is taking him to a audiologist so they can fit him for the right kind of hearing aid. He said he paid $2000 for his last one and it didn't last but a couple weeks. I remember that. They replaced it but the second one died too. I hope whatever they come up with works longer.

Oh my .. _ all this stuff going on over Danz house -- must stop..

our friend has had enough!

I just had to share some good news for a change.
Some family friends from years ago looked at my Dad's house and loved it. They are about my age and decided they wanted to move to town. They have already put in a loan application at the bank. We hadn't put the house up for sale yet. We were kind of waiting for my brother to come home from N. Carolina. But my Dad needs the proceeds so he can continue to live in the assisted living facility.
The other good news is my Dad went back to the hearing specialist today and with the aid of a new loaner hearing aid he can now hear about 40%. He can once again carry on a conversation!!! They are still not sure what caused the hearing loss (most likely a stroke) but it has improved to where he could hear sounds but not make them out. So with this particular type of hearing aid he can resume a somewhat normal life.
Thank you all for your prayers and best wishes.
This is good news, hope it all works out with the house.
Holy Carp!

Which one of you no-for-goods ordered this wretched weather? I'm done with it. you hear me?

Done!

It's awful.

(sitting in the corner, pouting)

furthermore, it grates me to no end that it's impossible to have correct spacing, capitalization & whatnot on my phone. it won't allow me to correct it! I'm a bloody editor! I can't handle this!

(drops phone, walks away)
bahahahahaha--last snowstorm one of the churches here had a message-whoever is praying for snow please stop--sent you a pm

Danz, I'm so sorry you're still losing birds, it would seem like it would level off. I did go in after I lost those 4 birds & just spray the heck out of my coop & even all the birds with oxine. I don't use the activated kind, just the plain stuff. I don't know if that helped or not, but I figured it sure couldn't hurt. I know you have been doing everything you can to try to get your birds well. I hope they recover soon.

HEChicken, did your chicks get there yet? I agree with Danz, that might be a good alternative to make something with tortillas. That way you wouldn't have to buy white bread & they could still have something to eat that is decent for them.

Chooks, I got a trio of blue laced Barnevelder chicks, that's what came from Tennessee. I'm supposed to be getting an extra little rooster from Trudi also just so I have a backup & a different line. She got a bunch of chicks & ended up with a bunch of roosters, so I thought while she had extras I might as well get one. Barnevelders are so hard to get hold of & especially the blue laced ones.

Okay guys, I'm just jumping in the middle of everything as usual. Haven't caught up on reading yet. Has anyone heard of Ethan Neises or know about the quality of his birds. I hear he has some SLW's? PM me if you have any info, please! So many here are wanting them, I just wondered if it would be a good source. Thanks so much!

I don't keep water in the coop so I don't have the issue with soaked bedding. Feed in the coop, water outside, and it works great. I also don't provide them with a pool. I had a wading pool last summer for them to cool off in (chickens and ducks) but put it away so it wouldn't freeze and crack over the winter. I use the big rubber bowls for some of my water, and the ducks can get their whole beak wet in those to clean out their nostrils. Otherwise, when the want to go for a swim, the females fly down to the pond or hop over the fence to the lagoon. The males are too large to take off so when I open the gate in the afternoons for free range time, they hike down to the pond
lau.gif
They LIKE to swim. They don't NEED to.

DH would not appreciate you encouraging me ... besides, it's the same problem as with more chickens. There is just no room.

ERs are horrible and they are anything but fast. I hope you're feeling much better now.

We only lost a tiny limb or two, but some neighbors had quite a bit down. All day today it "rained" ice off the trees!

It gets my hackles up that people -- and I know many of them myself -- think whole wheat bread is "weird" or "exotic" food. Then again, I also know people who are afraid to try my vegetables because of the green confetti (otherwise known as herbs).

Do you think they'd be OK with just cold cuts, cheese, fruit and juice? Maybe some carrot sticks to replace the lettuce or tomatoes on a sandwich? Then you wouldn't have to worry about bread, and it would still all be finger food.

Got the call first thing this morning so ran down to the post office to pick up the chicks. I've spent some time unpacking and getting them settled in with food and water - all appear to be healthy and thriving. The leghorns took one look at the EcoGlow and decided getting up on it was their best bet. The rest are content to be under it. I added in the chicks from my hatch, who hatched the same day, and they are mucho happy to have so many "siblings".

As I've mentioned, my two dogs sleep in a dogloo in the chicken yard at night, and we haven't had any issues with doing that. But last night I went to bed and lay here listening to the dogs bark, bark, bark. I let it go for awhile, pleased that whatever they had detected in the night knew they were there. But when it continued to go on and on, I couldn't get to sleep, so, feeling rather aggravated, I put on my coat and boots and stomped down there. I told them to go in the dogloo. They did that thing where they slink past the entrance without going in. I told them again. They slunk back and were now back beside me. It was late enough - and I knew my alarm would go off early enough - that I started to get really irritated, and told them again to go in. They still defied me. So I grabbed a collar, and directed the head into the dogloo, pushing the body in with my other hand. One dog in. Two dogs in. Now to grab the pallet I can use to block the entrance. Oh dang, its out of reach. "Stay, dogs. STAY". I grabbed the pallet, and turned around and dog one was back out. REALLY irritated by now, I grabbed her, shoved her back in and got the pallet in front of the dogloo. Back to bed and blessed silence at last. Off to sleep.....

This morning I realized I'd better get down there fairly early to let them out. As I was walking down to the chicken yard, Ned was gobbling like crazy and Madge was calling too. But her call was a little muffled. Where on earth could she be? Then it hit me why the dogs didn't want to go in the dogloo last night - Madge was in there!!! In my defense, she has never slept in the dogloo before - she always goes in the coop to roost - so there was no reason for it to occur to me to look in there (though I really should have been more sensitive to the dogs' reluctance to go in. Lesson learned).

I think what must have happened is that she went in to lay her egg really late, and then just stayed in there, so when the dogs discovered her there, they didn't want to go in. I am so glad my dogs are truly poultry safe - it must have been a little cramped with all three of them but Madge was fine this morning, if not a little perturbed at having had to share her sleeping quarters with two dogs
roll.png

The best part is that her egg was way in the back of the dogloo this morning, completely unscathed. One of the dogs discovered eggs awhile back and I have one hen who consistently lays in the dogloo during the day, so the dog was enjoying a nice little treat each night. But I caught her in the act one time and told her "No" and she is such a good dog who really wants to please, so to my knowledge she hasn't eaten another egg since. In this case she was apparently in the dogloo all night long with the turkey egg (it was cold so no one was sleeping on it keeping it warm) and didn't eat it.
