Consolidated Kansas

Sadly no. She was a scruffy black polish hen her name was marble for her mabled legs and I cant stop crying Its hard to accept she is gone. I developed such a close bond to her over the past few weeks and I knew she also enjoyed my copmpany but I guess the infection was to strong :(

As a reminder-- this is the one that died last week. This is the ONLY one that had barring this nice and defined! I'm pretty sure this one was 100%. So beautiful, and such a darned shame it died. Sigh.

Ok. I am super annoyed with myself and my birds right now. They have pulled one on me, and I should have known better than to fall for it! I got home from church and let my birds out of the run. They were quite happy to be out. I needed to fill the horse water tank, so I went out, removed the plug, set the plug down, and went inside to change while it drained. When I came back a couple minutes later to put the plug back in and refill the tank, the plug was gone. The ducks/geese had been playing in the water and now I can't find the plug. It was a 3/4" plug, so it was kinda large for anyone to swallow, but they could have easily moved it around, and there are LOTS of hiding places in the yard for something so small.

I did a quick internet search, and they don't sell replacement plugs. The tank is a $150 tank, and it is the only one I've got for my horses. I called Orscheln's and talked to the manager there. He had a leaky tank that he's going to let me have the plug for, thank goodness! However, I am still annoyed with myself for setting the plug down. I should know better than that! Birds: 1, Me: 0

Anyone else had their birds play tricks on them???

Oh UGH!! That sounds awful! I'm glad they had a plug, but I'd be really worried about where the first one went!

Just now, I went out to feed and I had a Silkie try to commit suicide on me! I poured feed in and everyone else ate normally and this one BOLTED it's food. Then she ran around "choking" and gasping and making little noises in distress. So I grabbed her quick and held her upside down and massaged her crop upwards to her beak and made her throw it all up. It all came out in a thick saliva string. Crazy bird! Nearly gave me a heart attack! So after I got most of the food back out I sat her down and she went over and tried to do it all over again. I ended up taking her outside and sitting on the ground with her for a few minutes and massaging her crop down to get all the food down, because she wasn't choking at that point-- just having a hard time swallowing. I tried to make her drink, but she refused. So after the massage, she seemed okay and I took her back to her pen and watched her for a while. She seems fine now. Geesh! These birds can really stress you out!

BTW-- you might find your plug in their water dish?? Don't they love to dunk "food" in the water bowls? It might be near a water bowl too... Just a thought!

PolishPal-- very sorry about your bird that died. It's always upsetting when one dies.

Hawkeye I think 3 of mine look just like what you are calling mottled. I just assumed those were girls cause otherwise they look right and their barring is getting finer on their neck than it was. I have two with good barring but one of those has gold on it's face. They all have huge combs for their age. I am thinking I want to buy a couple more pullets to go with what I have and then wait to see what the young ones do. I'll just throw the "mixed" girls in with the layers....if there are any girls.
Lizzy my geese will pick up anything. I found a piece of hose, a shackle, a bolt, some sticks and lots of pieces of grass in the water today. I've also lost the plugs out of a couple of my stock tanks and just bought a regular NPT plug the right size and it works perfectly. I've got tanks made by 4 different companies.
