Quote: The painkillers ending in '-caine' are the dangerous ones. The stuff you find in most generic triple-antibiotics these days is different, and not dangerous for fowl. I'm able to vouch for the other non-caine inclusion in neosporin plus, but can't remember what it's called...

Lizzy my geese will pick up anything. I found a piece of hose, a shackle, a bolt, some sticks and lots of pieces of grass in the water today. I've also lost the plugs out of a couple of my stock tanks and just bought a regular NPT plug the right size and it works perfectly. I've got tanks made by 4 different companies.
I will look in their water bowls... Thanks for the tip. Pardon my ignorance, but what's "NPT"?

Okay Danz, SPILL! What is your good news?

Chooks - thanks for clearing that up on the triple antibiotic.

Lizzy, I too would check the water bowl - my ducks love to plunge everything into water to see what it does.

Polishpal, sorry for the loss of your hen.

Hawkeye and Danz, I wonder if the barring comes in more distinctly with their teenage molt? I will be interested to find out along with you. Since I got mine closer to adult age, I don't have their baby pictures to compare and say for sure.

Well, I've had a day with turkey poults. I can't remember what I've posted here and what is on other threads so if this is repetitive, I apologize. Long story short, I had 4 turkey and 3 chicken eggs under a broody hen, all due to hatch within 24 hours. The chicks hatched and the broody sat on the nest for another day but then abandoned it. Dismayed, I went to toss the eggs and decided to open the only one that had pipped. I did so carefully but after pushing on the membrane, when I got no response, I assumed it dead, and started to eggtopsy it. That was when I found out it was still alive. I raced it and the other 3 up to put them in my incubator and by this morning it was fully hatched. Two more were pipped and hatched throughout the day. When the first two were up and walking around fairly well, I decided to see if the broody hen (no longer broody of course, now mother hen) would accept them. She looked at them in horror but then started the strangest set of vocalizations I've ever heard, alternately sounding the alarm and cooing to them. They tried to run under her but she kept backing away from them as though afraid. However she wasn't outright attacking them either. When she settled down to nap with her chicks, I picked them up and put them under her and she settled herself around them, then, after nap time, tried to show them where to find food. They didn't eat but should have yolk reserves to allow them to go another day at least without, so I'm sure they will tomorrow. She has now firmly adopted them and tucked them away under her with the others when it came time for bed. So far, so good.

Meanwhile, the 3rd to hatch is still in the incubator, resting. I plan to put it under her after dark, and by morning hopefully it will be coordinated enough to keep up with the rest of her brood. The 4th still hadn't pipped, so I figured it wasn't going to hatch, but candled before tossing, just in case. To my surprise, I could not only see movement but it responded to the light by peeping and tap-tap-tapping on the shell - I could feel the little vibrations. So it is back in the incubator and hopefully will hatch tonight. I am pleased by 100% fertility though I wish their hatching wasn't quite so spread out. May be the difference between being on the outside or the inside of the clutch while being incubated by the broody.

Great hatch Hechicken. I had to toss a whole load of turkey eggs today. They all failed to internally pip except one blue slate that hatched. I think I may have had my hatcher too humid tryign to get ducks to hatch. They didn't hatch well either. Why do these things happen? I go along and everything works perfectly, then Pffft they go south.

I just noticed an auction not going well on rare breed auctions. I called the guy and told him it wouldn't let me bid. This is the guy I bought my Very expensive blue gold partridge brahmas from back in January. He really lost a lot of money on those chicks but he also made me a deal to sell me some at a good price. Not that I can afford them .....but I just had to do it. I sure hope they will be okay. They'll only be a couple weeks old when I get them. I'm getting 8 chicks for about the same price Greenfire is asking for one of them. I'm hoping my girls start laying soon but I can always use more of these beauties. I've got to quit spending so much money!!!

You will get the good news soon I am sure. I don't want to steal the thunder! One person here has figured it!

No such luck... Only mud in the water bowl. :) They would've had to carry the cap clear across the yard to put it in the water bowl, and when they left the stock tank area, they were headed in the wrong direction, so they would have had to carry it the long way around the 3 acre yard to get it to their water bowls. Thanks for the idea though!

HEChicken, that is so exciting!! Can't wait to see some pictures of mama and her little crew!
Sharol, yes, I am a doula! I am taking time off this year though, since having a baby of my own just four months ago. I'll probably start attending again sometime in the fall.
Polishpal, so very sorry about your girl! (((hugs)))

Today I got another wall built on the coop! Most of it is built with recycled materials, so it's been a bit tricky piece it together, but I'm moving right along.
Here are some pictures of the chickies from today:

A bit off topic, but do any of you watch Downton Abbey? Well, Edith, in true downton form, has been the first/only to poop on me. Living up to her namesake already, I suppose :)

Oh, and here's our double brooder set up! I made the top one with what we had on hand. Pretty proud of that!

First on the baring-- I doubt it gets better as they molt. Simply because I had that PERFECT bird that died on me and it always had perfect baring on it. The last picture I had of it was 2 weeks ago-- and as you can see, it looks like a zebra. The ones I have now look mottled and messy. Nothing like that other one. So glad that your poults hatched. Sounds like a stressful event with the incubator, hatching and back to the broody! I bet she was part terrified and part mama hen kicking in. Tough for her to decide which one to give in to! LOL

What breed is it? Congrats on the score-- sounds like you got a good deal! Greenfire will have to come down in price maybe if everyone else has them and is selling them. I only guessed your news when I saw your cross post else where! LOL So funny!

ADORABLE!!! And nice brooder set up you have there! This picture above though, is awesome!

Awww...great pics! I would be really careful about that top brooder as it doesn't look like there is much room for them to get out of the light when they are too warm, and the plastic holds in heat VERY well. I would put that light on a rheostat (dimmer) switch so you can adjust the temperature if they appear to be too warm.

Those kind of tubs are excellent for animal containers. I used to use them when I raised mice and rats. By replacing most of the lid with hardware cloth, I had a great cage for them that was easy to wash out and allowed for lots of space for enrichment for them - climbing, ladders etc.
