Consolidated Kansas

Okay I know this is a CHICKEN SITE and I do have 20 birds and have gleened wonderful advice and information here so I thought id throw this out. My wife anbd I just bought 2 baby goats.. 5 days old and being bottle fed.We are in Valley Center Kansas and with the weather coming through I was wondering if they were going to need to come inside tonight. I have them ina barn stall with plenty straw and 2 250 watt heat lamps about 3 feet above the floor.
They are the cutest little guys. What do you guys think. Have any of you raised goats? HELP!!!

LOL

Oh, Maidenwolf, I forgot I did have a broody in Wichita and I did what Danz suggested - marked the eggs and every day I removed the ones that weren't marked. That was a little stressful for both of us because she didn't like being moved off the nest so I could find eggs to collect, so I prefer segregation, but that is an option if segregating isn't possible.

Well, my second poult just hatched. I had an issue yesterday where my broody hen decided it was time to get off the nest with her three chicks, but of the four turkey eggs, only 1 had pipped. I thought it was dead. Long story short, it wasn't and I was afraid I was going to lose it. I put all the eggs in an incubator and the one that was touch and go is looking much better this morning and I just watched a second zip and hatch. A third is pipped and I can see it breathing through its pip hole.

Yesterday I planted my seedlings and last night DH informed me they are calling for freezing rain and snow again on Monday. I cannot believe this spring!!! So now I have to worry my newly planted seedlings won't do well. I guess I will cover them up tonight and hope for the best. Grrr. After planting them, I went to get some hay to use as mulch. The previous owners left 2 round bales and several square bales out in our pasture that are no longer any good as feed but will be great for mulch. So I lifted some flakes of one of the square bales into my lawn cart, and then realized I'd hit the motherload. You know those white grubs that the moles go after to eat? Well, under where the bale had been, the ground was covered in them, and they were the biggest I've ever seen. I set to hastily to gather them up before they dug down out of the light, and my chickens had a feast. Now I know where to go looking for them. Every few days I can go down, move some more hay, and gather a bowlful of them.

I think this is a weird year, weather wise. I was hoping to have time to go to the nursery yesterday since they had their flat sale this weekend but alas, I missed it. Hoping the forecast was wrong that we had a hard freeze night coming this Wednesday. It is late April, we need nice Spring weather day and night for the plants and for us humans!

She didn't make it

she died a few minutes ago
Polishpal, so worry that your chicken didn't make it. Have a bottle of Penicillin on hand, it comes in handy in case you need it next time. The feed stores have it in the fridge and you can get the syringes and needles there as well.

My stupid cross rooster is pecking my backdoor window?!

I think all roosters have some sillyness in them. At least mine do. They love to crow when I was out there cleaning the coop. Then come running towards me when they see me approaching the coop thinking I must have goodies with me.

tweetybaby2005, sounds like a very busy day!

I had a similarly busy day but it was fun stuff. I absolutely loved the weather. The kids planted more strawberries and asparagus. So we'll see how that turns out this year.

I'm thinking of taking some chicks to the Mulvane swap. Has anyone gone to that swap before? Any insight would be appreciated since I've only attended one swap and just went to pick up some birds.

Thanks Deerfield. Strawberries ... yummy. I have never had any luck with asparagus. Planted some years ago and DH kept telling me it takes 3 years before we can harvest the spears. But I never saw any spears. I might have to google a bit more about asparagus planting. I must not have done it right.

I don't have any goat raising experience but your baby goats are cute!!

They are either very small or your have a huge barn that makes them look small. We have a few people here that have goats so I'm sure they will chime in as soon as they logon to the site.

Great hatch Hechicken. I had to toss a whole load of turkey eggs today. They all failed to internally pip except one blue slate that hatched. I think I may have had my hatcher too humid tryign to get ducks to hatch. They didn't hatch well either. Why do these things happen? I go along and everything works perfectly, then Pffft they go south.

I just noticed an auction not going well on rare breed auctions. I called the guy and told him it wouldn't let me bid. This is the guy I bought my Very expensive blue gold partridge brahmas from back in January. He really lost a lot of money on those chicks but he also made me a deal to sell me some at a good price. Not that I can afford them .....but I just had to do it. I sure hope they will be okay. They'll only be a couple weeks old when I get them. I'm getting 8 chicks for about the same price Greenfire is asking for one of them. I'm hoping my girls start laying soon but I can always use more of these beauties. I've got to quit spending so much money!!!

You will get the good news soon I am sure. I don't want to steal the thunder! One person here has figured it!

Danz... do post some pics of the rare breed chicks once you get them. I would love to see them. Glad you got them for a great price!

By the way... what's the great news?

First on the baring-- I doubt it gets better as they molt. Simply because I had that PERFECT bird that died on me and it always had perfect baring on it. The last picture I had of it was 2 weeks ago-- and as you can see, it looks like a zebra. The ones I have now look mottled and messy. Nothing like that other one. So glad that your poults hatched. Sounds like a stressful event with the incubator, hatching and back to the broody! I bet she was part terrified and part mama hen kicking in. Tough for her to decide which one to give in to! LOL
I dunno honestly. When raising barred chicks of several kinds in the past I would have some that looked almost black and would bar in later. I'm not sure about barred rocks. I had so many when I raised barred rocks this year I didn't pay much attention. I was trying to pick out the blues instead of watching the barred ones.

What breed is it? Congrats on the score-- sounds like you got a good deal! Greenfire will have to come down in price maybe if everyone else has them and is selling them. I only guessed your news when I saw your cross post else where! LOL So funny!
Oh no! These are still not what anyone has. Greenfire just sold their first small group of chicks in over 2 years. These are the same as my others. Blue/gold partridge brahmas. (the trio I paid $700 for). I still haven't gotten an egg from them yet. I kind of hope they hold off until DH finished the new pen/house he has been building. It will be nice for a couple of trios for special breeding. I should take some more recent pictures of my girls. They are gorgeous. My boy is so tall he keeps wearing the feathers off his back going in and out the door.

ADORABLE!!! And nice brooder set up you have there! This picture above though, is awesome!

I apparently made a huge mistake and got some duck eggs marked with the wrong date. I must have marked them a week early. Lots of times I mark chicken eggs and the others at the same time and there is a week difference. I must have gotten the chicken date on them. Any way I cracked them open because I thought the ducks were going to suffocate and I just screwed up most of a batch some how. But neither of them were ready to come out yet. I taped the shell but they probably won't survive. I feel so dumb. I was trying to get everything out of the hatcher so I could disinfect and clean it before putting in another huge batch.

I sure hope my new sweeter heaters come tomorrow. I really want to get some birds out of this house. I need to do a little more work in the brooder and cover the edges where the wall meets the floor. Hopefully that will keep mice from squeezing in.
I also need to make a trip and buy a bunch of stuff today. I've been putting it off for a couple weeks and I really need to stock up on stuff. If the weather ever warms up again I want to get started on the new hoop coop.

I still haven't found the plug for my stock tank. I'm hoping my DH can go out this morning and look for it. With this cold weather coming, I'd really like to be able to fill the stock tank, rather than a protein tub so I don't have to worry about filling it again 'till after the weather warms back up again.

This morning, I went out and discovered 11 ducks eggs from my 8 ducks. They were all where they usually lay their eggs in the duck house, so I'm not sure how I managed to miss them yesterday, but now I don't know what to do with the 11 eggs. It was up to 70 degrees here yesterday. My DH refuses to let me hatch any eggs, so these will either be cooked and fed back to the birds or they will be sold. Do you think they're still okay for human consumption?

Barn stall is 9X12. Phone CAmera is deceptive but they are only 4 days old under 10 pounds each id say. Thanks

I must have missed something - why wouldn't they be? Eggs don't need to be refrigerated - that is just something grocery stores put in the heads of people by stocking them in the dairy department. No egg ever gets refrigerated around here and in the summer I keep my house thermostat at 85 degrees. They can sit for weeks at that temperature and still be fine, so one overnight in a coop won't hurt a thing. Heck, I often gather my eggs, then put them all in an unused nest box because there are too many to carry and I forgot to bring my egg basket with me. They sit there until next day when I can get back with the egg basket and carry them back to the house.

After spending a week looking for a used pack and play at various thrift stores, my new neighbors gave me theirs that they came across while they were moving. I moved my eight silkie babies in there Saturday. I think they are loving it. They can now see out the sides, they have more room, and the sides are too tall for them to fly out. Now I need to find another one for the other bantams I am growing out.
