Down to two chickens left in the house! How will I ever get rid of all the dust left behind?! Messy chickens! Hopefully, another couple weeks and they will all be outside.

Jennyjane - before I had Chicks, I really couldn't imagine how dusty it was. The downs from the Chicks were every where in my guest bathroom in the bsmt. Took me a long time to clean it up and not smell like chick brooder! 2 more to go for you. They do grow up fast, don't they?:D

Howdy everyone.

Congrats on the lambs HEchicken! Sounds like fun, just don't give them names!

Watch that stinking snake. They like chicks and eggs over mice anyday, much easier prey.

Hawkeye- Congrats on your new job! We will miss you very much up here though.

I should have done multies, I can't remember anything else off the top of my head!!! Geez...

Baby has been super fussy the last two days, wants to nurse all the time because she can't breath well from being sick and doesn't want to be put down which makes it hard to do much of anything. The one saving grace is that she does like to be in the Moby wrap so I can get some stuff done while she is in there and getting lugged around. I will be so glad when this cold finally lets go. I think I am finally getting better but she is still pretty congested and grumpy! Her diapers I think need to be stripped too because she has had several leaks which is really annoying having to change all her clothes every diaper change too. I am hoping stripping the liners will increase their absorbency again because I am tired of going through 5 outfits a day!

Alright, we are back to fussing so I am off! Have a great day!

Today is the anniversary of the death of 5 of my chickens who where eaten by a coyote pack R.I.P sparticus, pepper, wattles, Tweedledee and Tweedledum. I hope your scratching up worms in chicken heaven :'). Sparticus will always be my baby boy and have a home in my heart.

HEchicken: Lambs! How fun. I've seen more lambs/sheep around lately. There must be some new interest in them. My MIL said she tried raising lambs once, but she quit because they're so stupid. A friend was raising sheep about 5 years ago and she said it's true, they're not smart, but she liked having them anyway. Poor things!

Josie, I don't blame the baby -- I get pretty cranky when I'm sick, too! I hope things turn around soon for you both.

Gerrr! Internet service out in the country is not fun! We are far enough out that we cant get cable and the Hughes Net isn't very reliable nor is this new thing we are trying from Verizon. Seems like they work fine until you have a breeze or some clouds or leafs on the trees whatever the case what I tried to post last night went poof! after I hit submit so ,I'll try again.
Thanks for the feedback on the store baught chickens, I will just keep on enjoying them as always. Maybe someday my dd will want to show or breed something and we will know where to look,Right now her attention is split between horses and chickens. I have to imagine showing a chicken is more affordable than showing a horse. It's amazing how much money you can blow on a horse show, all for the opportunity of becoming the proud owner of a $10.00 ribbon. Yikes ! I sound like my parents .
Have any of you folks put clothes on your chickens before? I mean like the protective things for bare backs or the bra thing for big crops. We have two girls that lost allot of feathers to a eager roo,he's gone now but I'm concerned about sunburn, and we have a GLW who has a really big crop. She had sour or impacted crop several months ago we treated her and she seems to be feeling great now(eating ,scratching ,flying, bossing other girls around). It's just big like it got stretched out and she has lost some feathers from dragging it thru the grass.(I think?)Any thoughts?
Hope every one has a nice memorial-day weekend .Oh...and since we're talking about snakes just how big would a chick need to be to not be on the snake menu ?

I sort of feel "blank".
Sometimes, the only way through life is up the muddle! We just have to do until we are done enough to think or feel about it, then we can try the left or right, top & bottom, but I usually find myself stuck in the muddle!

Pretty sure we have a snake too HeChicken; Should be getting about 6 eggs a day and we are getting 1, maybe 2...sometimes 4....

In Ottawa, looking for a few pretty ladies- Lavender Orps, preferrably new hatches so they can bond with us. My husband thinks I am crazy because of this. Also looking for a quality coop that won't break the bank.

Welcome, I'm sure someone can fix you up with some Lavender Orps, Danz. I got some awhile back & they're growing like crazy. If you have any building skills at all it's a lot cheaper to build your own than to buy a coop, unless you can find something used. We had an existing storage shed that was my first coop, but I have had to add a lot of vents & windows to it in order for it to not be so hot inside. I still have one more window I need to get in on the north side yet. We built my breeder coop & while it wasn't cheap it still was cheaper for the size of building it is than buying one & I got what I wanted. Hoop coops also are pretty cheap to build & functional. It just depends on what you want.

Josie, I'm sorry the both of you are still down with the cold, I hope you're all better soon.

I'm getting ready to build a shelter for our little goats out of pallets. I have the pallets I have collected, but now we need to get other supplies to put it all together. I told my DH he is going to have to help me build it. I can do some of it, but I need some help with some things. It doesn't have to be an elaborate shelter for goats, but they do need shelter from rain & wind. This one will have a floor so they're not laying on the ground in the winter. It's always something around here it seems like that needs to be built or needs to be fixed.

Speaking of snakes, I was working at catching the rooster I gave away yesterday & the gal that took him said that when she walked back up to the car there was one in my driveway. I don't know what kind or how big, it was gone by the time I came up. We have a lot of them here with all the wooded areas we have & all the rocks on this hill behind our house. I don't go up on that hill much in the summer, I'm afraid of what might be hiding under & around those rocks. I'm not fond of snakes.

Josie, so sorry to hear you and baby have been suffering colds. It doesn't seem fair this time of year and for the little ones, does it? I hope you are both better soon.

To the person that was asking about broodies bringing egg production down.....it may have been me who made that comment, but it shouldn't bring production down over the whole flock - only the hen who is broody. When I made the comment about about production being down, I had a high number of broodies, each of whom was not laying a daily egg. However the hens who were NOT broody did continue to lay.

I spent over an hour today mowing my chicken yard. DH has often pondered whether I have too many birds for the space I gave them to support, and worries about them running out of grass to graze on. Well, I realized today I haven't seen my birds out at the far end of the yard for quite awhile and figured it was probably because the grass was too long for them to wade through. So I got out the mower and it was truly like mowing down a jungle. I actually killed the mower 3 times when it got into grass so long the blades couldn't keep turning. So I guess that means I don't have enough birds and need some more, right? LOL. It was rewarding to see them all out grazing the entire yard after I was done and the yard itself looks very neat now. Especially compared to outside the yard which looks overgrown and like it needs mowing. It never ends, does it?

Thanks to all for the support on the new sheep venture. We are such novices but will learn along the way, I guess. Josie, nope, not naming them - except names like Lambchop, Rack of lamb, etc. LOL.
