Consolidated Kansas

Josie, sorry you and baby are still not feeling good. Hope this cold stuff will be out of you guys' systems soon. Definitely is hard for the baby.

22qzoo - some of my chickens wear the chicken aprons. They are my roosters' favorites so I bought them for the hens. They work fairly well and it does not look too complicated so if you can sew, you can make it yourself. I think someone even posted the pattern or design on byc. My hens' backs took a few weeks to recover.

Rooster - now that you mentioned snakes eating eggs, I wonder if this is happening to me. Production has gone down a lot so I need to thoroughly check it out this weekend.

I'm with Hechicken, I need to mow the chicken yard. I have seen them eating the grass but they are growing too tall for my liking, especially now I am worried about snakes.

Have a great memorial day weekend. Was going to grill some steaks but DS declared the grill as 'no grill' zone because of a bird nest inside the grill and there is an egg!

Josie, so sorry to hear you and baby have been suffering colds. It doesn't seem fair this time of year and for the little ones, does it? I hope you are both better soon.

To the person that was asking about broodies bringing egg production down.....it may have been me who made that comment, but it shouldn't bring production down over the whole flock - only the hen who is broody. When I made the comment about about production being down, I had a high number of broodies, each of whom was not laying a daily egg. However the hens who were NOT broody did continue to lay.

I mentioned it. It may have been a coincidence or due to other factors, but one summer I had one hen after another go broody (never more than one at a time, though), and laying among all the hens slowed down. I have the two dogs who aren't right in the head; maybe my hens aren't either!

Yay , Internet is working again. Josie hi , I think I joined when you were out on "maternity leave" hang in there it's a marathon more than a race, my kids are 12 & 9 and it's safe to say I've been tired for twelve years.
Hawkeye congrats on the new job hope everything goes well.
Hechicken hope you enjoy the sheep . By the way , I think you said something about using pallets, this probably sounds dumb but how do you get them apart? I can't seem to get the nails out without tearing the wood apart in the process.
Polishpal I think it is really sweet how much you love you're chickens.

Not me...I also have trouble getting pallets apart so I'll be interested to hear other answers on this. I believe Trish44 was using the pallets as they come and not trying to take them apart but perhaps she will clarify....

I wrote this last night but couldn't get on the internet. Must be the holiday gremlin stealing internet access!

I'm jeolous to see Danz hatching out so many ducks. I just love them!!! I want more. Plus I love duck eggs. I have a salted duck eggs recipe that marinate duck eggs and they are delicious!!
Kuan, I'll bet I know that recipe. I have some friends from Korea and some others from China. They take the duck eggs and soak them for a few days in heavy brine and then boil them. They are very good. They also make some from soy sauce and other flavors, but the salt ones are best. They tell me the cayuga eggs are the best ones. They are usually green shelled by the way. Your little duckling could start laying by fall.
Down to two chickens left in the house! How will I ever get rid of all the dust left behind?! Messy chickens! Hopefully, another couple weeks and they will all be outside.
Chick dust? What is that? Try 5 incubators and several bins of chicks and ducks in the house at once and you'll finally just give up like I did. I can dust and before I leave the room it is back.
Howdy everyone.

Congrats on the lambs HEchicken! Sounds like fun, just don't give them names!

Watch that stinking snake. They like chicks and eggs over mice anyday, much easier prey.

Hawkeye- Congrats on your new job! We will miss you very much up here though.

I should have done multies, I can't remember anything else off the top of my head!!! Geez...

Baby has been super fussy the last two days, wants to nurse all the time because she can't breath well from being sick and doesn't want to be put down which makes it hard to do much of anything. The one saving grace is that she does like to be in the Moby wrap so I can get some stuff done while she is in there and getting lugged around. I will be so glad when this cold finally lets go. I think I am finally getting better but she is still pretty congested and grumpy! Her diapers I think need to be stripped too because she has had several leaks which is really annoying having to change all her clothes every diaper change too. I am hoping stripping the liners will increase their absorbency again because I am tired of going through 5 outfits a day!

Alright, we are back to fussing so I am off! Have a great day!
Aw, Josie. I so wish I were closer. I'd give you a granny break. Poor little cherub! Do you have a nose sucker thing for her? One saving grace is when it gets summer you won't have to put many clothes on her so you won't have to change every thing. Aren't you glad you got that really big capacity washer?

Okay HeChicken everyone else has been supportive of the lambs. I am glad it is you and not me. I watched my brother in law deal with them and I decided that cute little lambs were not what I wanted. Worst part was that when they were older they really stank. Maybe if you plan to butcher yours you won't have to smell that.
Hey! It's pretty rare to hear I don't want some animal!

Does that mean I am gaining self control??

Well today was one for the record books and I feel this day was 3 days long. I got up early and go things ready so I could drive down toward Pittsburg to pick up a load of geese for trudigale and myself. The person I was supposed to meet ran about 45 minutes late. I wasn't upset, just glad he was okay because no one could reach him.
Well that put me late getting back home. Then I had to mark geese so I could put them in with my guys temporarily. Two of the adults had to have a wing clipped because I was told those two could fly, and I had to band the young ones so I could tell them from my young ones. Putting them all up this evening was a bit more chore than it has been but not too bad. I love to let the geese free range. Not only that but it surely saves me some feed.
After that I got all the birds fed and watered that I didn't get done earlier this morning before I left. Then it was off to finish gathering eggs and then washing them to take them to town. The girls are doing better. I had 18 dozen to take with me today. (that was several days worth.) It's finally picking up some.
So I delivered eggs to the first place, took time to look at college graduation pictures of my friends. Off to deliver eggs to place # 2. Not home but left me money and egg cartons. (He always checks for his eggs when he gets home on Friday.) Then off to place # 3 where I had to tour their garden again but got two tomato plants and a couple of winter melon plants to take home. I went to my Mom and Dad's home. (Mom passed last year and my dad is in an assisted living home & not doing well... for those that don't know.) I dug up a few iris tubers while they are blooming so I could grow some of hers with my own. I already have a few she gave me years ago. And I pulled up a bunch of Jerusalem artichokes to plant around the chicken pens for shade and to harvest later. I just need to find the time to get them planted. My sister was pulling them up and tossing them. They don't look pretty but Mom and Dad let them grow for the birds to eat. I plan to use them as shade and then try eating some this fall.
After that I went to see my oldest sister and took her a Christmas present and her birthday present. Yep I said Christmas present. She was gone this Christmas and I kept forgetting to take it to her. Then I went to see my Dad. He's not feeling well at all and they increased his morphine and left it so he could actually give it to himself. He is having trouble breathing and the morphine helps relax his bronchials so he can breath easier.
Then I drove back home, emptied the hatcher and cleaned it up and moved ducks and chicks here and there.
Back outside to feed and water the ducklings again.
Then finally back out again to put everyone up for the night.
I was also thrilled today to find my first cream legbar egg. Woot! I love that blue!

Yeah, I'm not taking them apart, using them whole. I have tried that before & it's too much work.

Not me...I also have trouble getting pallets apart so I'll be interested to hear other answers on this. I believe Trish44 was using the pallets as they come and not trying to take them apart but perhaps she will clarify....
Oh ,okay that makes sense. It always seems like there is lots of potential in a stack of pallets,I was going to use the wood to side the inside of the coop but gave-up and had a bonfire

HOLLY-COW! Danz what kind of coffee are you drinking and where can I get some? ...Dusting? if I really dusted it would be called re-decorating.

LOL I dust only when I expect company! In fact I clean about as often. I don't have time for the house. I am always outside working. The house is simply a place to eat, sleep, and hatch chicks!

My goodness, you have been busy. I need to spend more time cleaning and straightening up, but there are always other things to do! I like your theory!

Speaking of hatching, this is my first hatch, and it is a regular Hatchstock in there! The incubator if full of feathery babies and some wet ones! I haven't opened it yet, and the first peeps hatched about 7 pm Thursday night. I am thinking I ought to move them, but there are always wet peeps and I don't want anyone getting a chill. I still have several eggs left to hatch but no current pips that I can see. This is such an amazing experience! When should I move them? I so want them all to make it!
