SO I guess misters are that common, lol!
I have never used them , but might try that this summer.

A dead snake is easy to identify

They only come in 2 types;
1: Headless
2: I need practice aiming

SSorry I haven't been on! Ive been super busy with chores and family things. My splay leg guinea is getting bigger and stronger but her leg still splays out but she is walking and we fixed her curled toe problem :). Also I'm having problems with all my silkie roo's fighting so I had to seperate my black roo from the two white roos. But the black roo douse have two hens to keep him company :)

Right.... you may not die from non poisonous snake bite but it still hurts and will definitely freak me out, that's for sure!
You might be surprised. I keep snakes and have been bitten multiple times and could barely feel it. Mine are rat snakes, which kill by constricting, and constrictor type snakes do not have the big fangs that the poisonous ones do. I liken it to being scratched by the scratchy side of velcro. Occasionally they will draw a little blood but most times not even that. Almost any snake will try to flee and will only bite if it feels trapped. Even rattlers rattle their tail as a warning to stay away, precisely because they DON'T want to engage you in conflict.

Where do you guys get the misters from?
I got mine from Ace Hardware last summer after everyone raved about them but I probably won't even pull it out this year. I didn't find it to be that great, and the birds almost never went anywhere near it. If you have enough shade, I think they get more benefit from being in the shade than being under a mister. Don't shoot me everyone - I know a lot of you have had good success with them - but I just found them to be a big water waster. The spigot I attach it to leaks a little water any time its on, so to leave the mister running hours each day meant I was wasting a lot more water than what was coming out the mister. If the birds had all been standing near the mister I would have said it was worth it but since they only rarely got close enough to get the benefit (and that was usually on the way somewhere else), it didn't seem worth it to me.

Oh, ironically, the twisty type of misters are called "Cobra Misters", after all the talk about snakes. If you go to any Ace, Walgreens, Walmart etc and ask for a Cobra Mister, that is what you will end up with. They're not horribly expensive - I think mine was under $10.

Well, they have modified the forecast to downgrade a few days from the 90's to the 80's so I'm happy for that. I've been spending hours outdoors in the morning and evenings, weeding my veggie garden. I have a ton of green tomatoes already and some peppers on the pepper plants too, so I am gratified to see that. Now if we can just get some rain this weekend I can get away with not watering for a few more days.

Last night we had to rig up livestock panels to increase the amount of grazing area the sheep have, yet again. They are eating it faster than I expected. Hopefully our fencing will get done soon so we can turn them loose without worrying about them any more.

Oh HeChicken, that's just as bad as the bite!! Being constricted, the feeling of death and being trapped just makes me shudder! No snakes for me and I sure hope they don't crawl around for me to see if at all possible...

On a side note, My DH just told me that he killed a snake a few days ago with the shovel. He was telling me how sharp the shovel was... I just had shake my head and walk away.

Cobra Misters... hmmm... how ironic... We do have quite a bit of shade from the eve of the barn roof and there is a mulberry tree (I think) by the gate where the chickens love to hang out. I plan to plant a few more trees around the fenced in area outside the barn to provide more shade this Fall. Thinking may be some fruit trees so both human and bird can consume the fruits. More like for the birds since they will more than likely eat them while us human are working.

It is HOT HOT HOT outside. The humidity is horrible... again. Did they really forecast for cooler temps? I might even have to buy me a "Cobra Mister" to cool off!!!

My birds gave me 2 eggs yesterday according to DH. I sure hope he is wrong. We have at least 15 birds that are of laying age and had been laying, minus the 2 that were broody (1 still sitting on eggs). I tried to move the mama hen and her chicks out yesterday. No dice. Got pecked big time. I think I'll do it tonight when it is dark.

Stay cool everyone. We need more rain and cooler weather!!!

Oh no, no no! I didn't mean they try to constrict ME - they are way too small for that. What constrictors do, is grab and bite, but then wrap around the victim to suffocate it. By holding on with their mouth they retain control and can also determine when the animal has quit fighting. When I've been bitten it is always a feeding error on their part. They have an organ called a Jacobsen's organ and it is how they detect prey - the air moving over it can help them not only smell, but also "see" an image of what the animal looks like - how big it is, where it is etc - even when it is not within sight of their eyes. It is actually a very cool function. Anyway, sometimes if my snakes are really hungry, I will open the enclosure holding a rat for them, and they strike at the rat but in their haste, get me instead. They will latch on (like I said, feels like being scratched with velcro) and wrap around my hand, but in a very short time they realize they made a mistake and uncoil. I set them back in, offer the food again, and this time they take a little more care grabbing the right food item. Its really not a big deal.

Snakes are really amazing creatures. It makes me sad to hear of them being killed for no reason other than that they were born a snake.

I tend to agree with you.. I am not a fan of snakes in the sense that I want to handle them, but they eat lots of rodents and for the most part are good members of the environment. I don't kill them, I avoid them. My DH had snakes and spiders as a child, so he is fearless and quite knowledgeable about them.
