Consolidated Kansas

Bridgetbarger, I have a couple coops made from shipping containers. They take some work but are certainly functional. I put tin on my roofs when the bottom part was done. I, however took mine apart and switched sides so the boards were in the inside. I water treated one of them and the other one needs paint or something. I just haven't gotten it done.
I'm really dragging today and not feeling very good. But at least I got the birds fed and watered. I still have chicks hatching. I also had the last goose egg hatch that was supposed to hatch 2 days ago. Even so, it still has some unabsorbed yolk so I am going to leave it in the incubator and hope it absorbs. That makes 10 geese so far.
22Qzoo I found the cayuga eggs. They were laying in my old pheasant house. There was a chicken sitting on them when I saw them. So I guess when the chicks get done hatching I'll throw some in the incubator and see if they develop. I went and threw out every egg that was in the duck house except a nest that was warm. I'll let them work on those but the rest of the eggs are going to go for eating eggs for awhile. I have a new customer wanting some and I have two other customers that will take all I bring them.
I might as well make a little money off them until I find room enough to hatch some ducks.
So I am thinking I will sell my Coronation sussex. I have lots of chicks but only have a pair and one extra young pullet that should start laying soon. I can sure use the pen space for another breed. They are beautiful birds but I have to make some cuts some where.
Tweety I haves some more English Orpingtons coming in the morning. I am slowly trying to switch all my orps to 100% English. I love those monster birds. Once I get enough of these to laying age I'm going to sell my American exhibition birds.
Just came in to take a little break and I need to get back out there and get to work.

ANOTHER QUESTION:::

my broody chickens eggs are starting to hatch (located in the coop with the others) one chicken came in (to check out the new food in there) and grabbed a baby by the leg. I am not sure if the mom knew what to do. Will they be OK in the long run? do I just let them go and see what happens? I was in the coop at the time as was able to put the baby back under mom. This is all new and very stressful to me! I am not cut out for this!

I do have a old rabbit hutch I can put them in that I recently got. I could put a wood bottom in it... but what about mommy being shut in there? would that be safe for her?

BridgetBarger do you have windows in that coop? I always thought about making one from a shipping crate, but never got around to going & getting one & Spirit had closed down their store for awhile after that tornado. I don't know if they opened it back up or not, but someone checked recently to see if they had any crates & they said they didn't. I could probably use another building, but my DH would kill me if I get one. He already says I have too much as it is.

I am however getting another color of Orpingtons that were shipped today that I've been waiting on for quite some time. Wish me luck that they get here alive & healthy because they're expensive little buggers. I also am supposed to be getting some eggs this week as well, but I haven't heard that they shipped yet.

I had to go get feed today, I was totally out in my barrels. I had FF mixed for today but I had nothing to mix any more with. I also ran out of goat feed & am getting low on chick starter, so I had to go get that too, it was an expensive day.

I have had other chickens kill baby chicks a broody hatched before. I would separate her if it were me. I kept a hen and about a dozen chicks in an old plastic dog kennel until the chicks got big enough to fend for themselves. They were pretty tight in there but did fine. I'd use the rabbit hutch for now unless you have a spot where she can get out with her chicks. They do like to take the chicks hunting for food when they can. Just be sure they have food and water.

No there are no windows, just 2 doors.

Hello fellow Kansas peeps
I live in Southeast Kansas, in the Parsons area. I have 27 chickens ( adult and chicks) with eggs due to hatch later this week, 15 guineas, 9 ducklings and 3 poults.Just though I stop by and say Hi.

Welcome!! I live in Wichita and have family in parsons. It is a nice town.

Quote: You may find that it is going to be way too hot in there this summer with no windows. Chickens have to have air circulation & they can take cold a lot better than heat. I converted a storage shed into my main coop when I started out & I have had to add 3 windows so far & have two vents. I still plan to add one more window because the shed windows are small ones & the used windows I found were from mobile homes & crank in & out & they're bigger. It still even with all the windows & vents I have gets very hot int here in the summer & I usually have to run a fan & leave the people door open even at night.

OH, I almost forgot... I finally started getting duck eggs again today! I was really beginning to get concerned about my ducks... Right about the time that I stopped getting eggs, I found one egg in the water that was accumulating on the bottom of the upside-down kiddie pool. I set it beside the pool and forgot about it until the next day when I realized it was GONE, and I haven't found it since (almost a week later). I was beginning to think that I had an egg thief that was ONLY stealing eggs and not hurting the birds... I'm guessing that the birds moved the egg, and I just haven't found it yet... When it warms up enough to thaw the pool back out, I need to go empty it and refill it. Maybe I'll find it when I can move the pool. I'm guessing it got pushed behind the pool.

Either way, I'm glad my girls decided to stop striking. :)

I know exactly how good it feels when the girls start laying again; I'm happy for you!

It was cold this morning... I was beginning to think all the beautiful flowers from my prairie fire crap apple tree will just freeze and drop off. The 2 fruit bearing pear trees didn't bear much fruit last year so I was hoping this year will be different. But with the snow and cold, I'm not sure. The 2 pear trees were full of blooms over the weekend but I'm afraid the freeze just ruined all of it. Sigh...

My MIL just had DH cut down her apricot tree because she's had it for 4-5 years and never got a single apricot from it. It always blooms, then there's a freeze, and that's that. I think I'd have kept the tree anyway, but I understand her frustration.

This has nothing to do with anything, but the word 'Orpington' caught me eye and reminded me of a book I recently read. The nanny was named Mrs. Buff-Orpington.

It looks like we lost the three potatoes that had started to come up, and a row of beets that had sprouted. I guess it could have been worse, but I don't like to lose any beets. We can never get enough of those.
