Consolidated Kansas

I'm really cold today. It feels cold in the house. Amazing how when the thermometer reads the same when it's cooler outside it always feels colder in the house. To top things off I went ou to give the dogs some breakfast and a dog biscuit each and apparently that is the time the latch chose to break on the back storm door. I had all of the other doors locked which is pretty abnormal in the first place. I was out in my sleep clothes and couldn't get back in. DH was sound asleep after working all night. I finally found a screw driver and pried the door open. So I guess I have to replace a latch today. I don't think I have a spare either. Let me tell you it felt a lot colder out there when I couldn't get back in! I was ready to go camp out in the brooder with the chicks ....and all this was before my coffee was done.
I had a few more chicks hatch late and unfortunately I lost the last little goose I hatched. I think it got kind of trampled by the older ones. It was pretty unsteady on it's feet. I still need to come up with something better for them. Made me really sad.
I've been so overwhelmed with chicks the last couple days I haven't even gathered hatching eggs. I dare not complain because I know I'll hear a lecture about having too many.

We picked up chicks yesterday top two are feathered feet out off the bantam bins
2 black colored ones I haven't a clue

I'm guessing the top one is a mille fleur d'uclle. Second one a porcelain d'uccle. Next two silver laced Wyandotte, and last looks like an easter egger.

Mine love black oil sunflower seeds, but I don't give them too many at a time. They love anything with seeds best -- cucumbers, the insides of bell peppers, that kind of thing. They're also crazy about overripe bananas, kale, any kind of melon or berry, and yogurt, and they'll eat things like carrot peels. They also love when we find a grub and throw it in the pen for them.

See, this is when it pays to have been too busy to get your garden planted early!

I think I'd be afraid to eat those eggs. I'd cook them and give them to my dogs or birds.

As I was listening to the wind last night, I was thinking about Tweety laying awake listening to it with me!

That one night of windless peace sure was nice.

LOL... gotta enjoy the rare "windless" nights... get some zzzzzz while we could....

Ohhh Michelle, the chicks are soooo cute... I think I like the EE and the 2 Silver laced Wyandotte chicks the best. I never get tired of looking at fuzzy butts...

The wind is insane here as well. If I figured right and I'm sure I missed counting a few I hatched 118 chicks yesterday. I still have some unhatched eggs and a couple that pipped but haven't hatched but I'm giving up on those. I hatched Partridge Brahmas, Coronation sussex, Lavender orps, Barred rocks, black orpingtons, English BBS Orpingtons, Buff orpingtons, White orpingtons, speckled sussex, and Breda fowl. The bin is so full they can't move around. I need to find someplace else to put them because there are way too many. Right now I'm just trying to get them settled and started eating and drinking. Even though I separate the breeds between incubators I still missed sorting a few and got them confused. The white, black, lavender and English orpingtons can all look like other breeds and then the coronation sussex also look like them. It's crazy. I have a few barred rocks and they only way I can tell them from black orpingtons is the dot on their head and their legs are darker.

Danz... that's a LOT of chicks in 1 day! Whoa!

Sorry you got locked outside. I had that experience about a month ago. The latch from the mudroom storm door to the backyard broke. It locked the door and I couldn't get in. The front door was locked and the garage door was down. Of course I left my cell phone in the house and DH was taking a nap (he was supposed to just take 1 hr nap but by then, he was napping for almost 2 hrs!). So I rang the front door bell multiple times until he came down to open the door. Needless to say, I wanted the latch fixed. I ended up putting the electrical tape over it to keep the lock from dropping down every time the door was slam shut. I can't lock it now from the inside either but that's OK since it is just the storm door. I can still lock the regular door.

I found some duck eggs hiding in a different nest away from their regular laying place. Have no idea how long they have been there so I'm just going to cook them and let the dogs eat them.

Guys and gals... Tax season is over for me! Yay!!!

Good heaven, what's with this cold weather! I thought we were supposed to hit 53F today but it is only 39F right now! Where is Spring?!?! I need some warmer weather so I can get my seedlings harden off! I also need warmer weather so I can do a major cleaning in my chicken coop. Poor coop has been neglected for quite a few weeks since I've been so busy. I am hoping I could get it done today after work but I'll just wait till Saturday to do the cleaning.

Good thing I left the plastic tarp on the 2 walls because the blowing wind has got to be chilly! I plan to take them down when the night time temp gets consistently above 55F. So hopefully in the next week or 2 they can come down and I'll do some more patch work on the wall. My walls aren't the most secure so I'm thankful that the dogs are keeping the birds safe. They are enough to keep the dogs away but certainly not enough to keep the coon or other animals away from eating my birds.

Lets wish for some nice warm weather before we jump straight into Summer weather.
