HELP!!!
Okay, I got some ducklings today and I'm already worried about them. I got them all set up and comfy in my workshop, same as I did with my chicks last spring. When I set the feed and water out and got them all drinking one started getting a string of slime hanging out of it's mouth and shaking it's little head to get rid of it, I presume. I got a piece of tissue and wiped it off then set it back down. Pretty soon they're all doing the same thing, slime and bubbles out the nose and mouth. My hubby thinks it's just the feed dissolving in their mouths after they started to eat and drink. There was no feed in the tank when I bought them at Orscheln's this evening. They seem to be eating and drinking okay but what the heck is happening. I'm going back out to check on them in a few minutes. I may be sleeping out there tonight.

Try giving them water and food separately... I'm relatively new to chickens but I learned alot managing a pet store, it's not natural for most "pets" to both eat an drink at the same time, and when it comes to babies it shows! I always wait 10-20 minutes before giving water! Usually goes away! With the drooling issue I dunno, maybe the food is too large? Maybe they prefer it almost a power at the moment? Anything to maintain vitamin levels! Heck... I've syringe fed babies!

Hope everything works out...!

How are the babies doing?

First of all, ducklings are slobs. Lovable, cute, slobs.

Probably what they did was just overeat. There is just so much room down there for food and when more goes in, well, some comes out.

You said there was no food in their pen at the store. Was there water in for them? If ducklings are without water for a length of time, it can trigger a situation when they do drink that is not good for them. If you are still having problems with them, send me a PM and I will discuss that more with you. Even yet tonight.

Ducklings NEED water when they eat so they don't chock. They need water that is deep enough to get their bill into to clean out their nostrils. They need to stay out of water so they don't get wet and chilled. How to accomplish all of that is the trick. Read the duck forums for some ideas.

Again, PM me if you are needing anything more tonight. Hopefully they filled up and settled down and are sleeping. If they have food, water that they can't get into and are dry and warm, they should be fine.

Chickies-duckies-etc
Oh, thank you for responding so quickly!! I went out to check the babies as soon as I posted last and they were cozied up together under the light. Their water is in the same water jar fount I used for my chicks and I think the water is deep enough for them to get their noses in to keep them clear. Their feed is the un-medicated crumbles that was recommended in posts and other literature I read on ducklings. I'm excited to finally have duckies. Since they are hatchery choice from the farm store I don't know for sure their exact breeds. As soon as I am able I will post pics so others, in the know, can hopefully identify them. I looked at feathersite.com a while ago to see if mine look like what I was going for and I think I may have gotten two or three right. I don't know....... I doubt any are runners, which is what I wanted most.

I found out the Estes, which supplies Orscheln's, will ship as few as two ducks or goslings," so you don't have to raise more than you want". But there is a $12 small order charge. They also seem to have a $$ minimum of $35. So if I want to get 7 ducks from them or two, they'll ship for the $35 min plus $12 small order charge. Wow! So I got my 7 ducks on sale for $3.79 each at O's, for around $26.50 + tax. Pictures coming soon.

Thank you for the welcome.

CarolAnn,

I hope your little duckies are OK. I had thought about getting some, but I remember as a kid how messy they are, oh and stinky ......LOL but cut as a bug with ears.

Are there any good places to get some new birds in this area?

Valley Feed in Bonner springs, plus Orschelins in Lawrence, and some of the people on this thread have amazing birds

Is anyone hatching out any guinea keets? I've been watching craiglist, but so far, nothing. I know I might be getting a little impatient, but I want them out in the garden gobbling up bugs ASAP.

Cucumber beetles...

Really chilly at the Topeka Swap meet this morning. I wish I'd had my winter coat. There were more sellers than buyers but a really good turn out just the same. I was kind of disappointed more of the BYC people on this thread didn't show up. I really wanted to meet more of you. Had a great time chatting chicks anyway and still made some $$$.
It's so nice to hear perfect strangers tell you how great your birds look. Makes me feel like I am doing something right.
