Guineas? Oh, I love those goofy birds.
I had a bunch when I lived back at Solomon, but it got so I was feeding one a day to the bobcats, so I sold them.
Since moving to Hiawatha, we've got the great pyrenees dogs, so I can let some of my birds free range again. I bought 4 guineas at a swap meet. I "thought" I had 3 hens and one cock.
The one I was SURE was a cock turned out to be a hen, just older. The ones I thought were hens turned out to just be younger, and I'm pretty sure now that one of them is a hen and 2 "might" be cocks.
I've got some eggs in the bator right now, but they've got about 3 weeks to go yet. I hope I get a good hatch. I've heard if you get older birds like I did that they often don't stick around, so I want to raise the young ones to let them free range. With the number of wild turkeys I have around here I'm sure the older birds would take off.
It seems since I got these 4 guineas that we have been seeing a lot more pheasants in the yard, and hearing them all around. I know the guineas called in some turkeys. I suppose the turkeys were just curious as to what that bird was that was making all the racket. Do you think the guineas might be doing the same thing with the pheasants?
