Yes, the knife test should work on this like it does on a cake. Mine does always gel up but there was one time I had to keep putting it back in over and over again and it took closer to an hour and a half. I'm trying to remember what I figured out the issue was. I know it had to do with the water. Either I had used a different quantity of water or the oven temp was different. In any case, the temp wasn't sufficient to heat the water sufficiently to cook the custard - I know that was the end result. If you start with very cold water or a very high level, you will need to adjust the cook time accordingly as it is the oven heating the water to the right temp that ultimately cooks the custard to perfection, if that makes sense.
I lost track of how long it took mine to finally get done. It was more than 1 hour 10 minutes but beyond that, I'm not sure. As others have said, it turned out well, though next time I make it, I'll probably add more sugar to it. :D It is a great way to use up extra eggs though. I've still got 5+ dozen on hand taking up room in the fridge though. Looks like I'm gonna have to start advertising some very soon!

I spent the morning deep-cleaning the kitchen. I've been so sore and laid up for so long (from a car accident I was in back in January while 10 weeks pregnant... turns out whiplash and pregnancy are a wicked combination). This whole house has gotten to be a really big mess. It has really started bothering me. SO, now that I am slowly starting to feel better, I've been trying to slowly clean up different parts of the house and KEEP them that way. Keeping them clean is the hard part with 2 kids and a hubby, especially since I've been spending so much time on PT and doctor visits. However, I am trying. It is still frustrating to be sore still and to be so far behind still but I am doing my best to make due. This accident sure has given me a fresh understanding of what those with chronic pain go through. The only difference is that I still have the hope of getting better. I feel so bad for those that live with pain day in and day out.

Hello fellow Kansans,

Do any of you have hens you're trying to get rid of or for sale? Today all but one of my flock was killed by a fox. My whole family is extremely distraught, but especially my mom. She absolutely adored our chickens, and with me being in college this year, she loved to take care of her chickens to take her mind off of my absense. I want to surprise her with some new hens to help alleviate her sadness.

I don't really care what breed. If you are selling/getting rid of any hens or knows anyone who is, please let me know!! I was about to buy some hens from Murray McMurray until I saw the cost of shipping was almost twice that of the birds, haha.
I'm in the Kansas City area, specifically Olathe. (This is where my family lives, I'm at KU about 45 minutes away)

Thanks so much.

Talk to @chicken danz She isn't too terribly far away and has LOTs of birds to choose from. Personally, I wish I lived closer to her (rather than clear across the state).

Has she gotten the security under control? The fox will probably be back if they didn't remove it.

I'd contact @chicken danz

Welcome to the group @ChickenPeep . You are welcome to join in our group and discuss things on the forum. We always like to hear from new people. Yes as we talked I have lots of young girls for sale. All very nice quality and purebred. My son lives in Olathe and I can get to his house in an hour and 15 minutes. Lawrence is even closer.

I got somewhat caught up on things outside today. Everyone got fed and watered. So much to do before cool weather hits. The mud is unreal out there though. I sure hope it stays dry this coming week.

Great, thank you so much! I've actually posted here occasionally over the years, but it's been a while!

@ChickenPeep I agree, check with chicken danz, she is closest to you & may have some extra hens she needs to sell. You can send her a private message on here, that would be best so you can converse about what she has available.

Well I got one more thing marked off my list yesterday, I got the wire put over the chain link on my new rooster pen. It was just another one of the things I needed to get done. I have more to go out & do today & get feeding & watering done early. My DH is finally off for a day so he wants to go see a movie this evening. Things are getting checked off my list so I'm getting there but it all just takes time. I was so glad to get all of the hay for winter yesterday & get it all stacked in the barn/shed. I have already been having to feed hay because we ran out of grass in the fields. Sheep are hard on grass, they eat it down to the ground. My goats have eaten all of the trees up as far as they can reach out there too. I usually don't feed hay till October but had to start a month early this year.

I have 2 or 3 little pullets in my main coop starting to lay, yay! My others have started into molt so I'm not getting as many eggs now. I hope more of the young ones get started to help fill in. Those little pullet eggs are so cute, it take two to really make much to eat but they're working at it. I will have more starting up in the next couple of months. I need to start culling out old hens that aren't laying any more. There is no reason to keep feeding them if they're not producing. They're not pets for me, they need to earn their keep. I do have one EE hen that will stay till she dies, but she is special. The rest have to pull their weight.

My sneaky broody hen's chicks hatched and for a couple of days all was well. Since she hatched them in a stock tank brooder, it was easy to add food and water and let them get started. But yesterday she decided it was time they learned to free-range. She did her darndest to show them how to get out of the brooder. "Look chicks - all you have to do is jump up to the top of the brooder and then jump down on the other side". She showed them over and over again. However a stock tank is way too high for chicks, and of course as soon as she disappeared from sight, they panicked and started chirping loudly for her to return. In the end I took pity on her and picked them all up and carried them down to the chicken yard. I put them in a nursery pen there and she seems happy enough with that. I think even the hen had it figured out by the time I rescued them and though she wasn't happy about being picked up, she didn't fight it either. She groused all the way down to the chicken yard but didn't try to get away from me and when I put her in the pen with the chicks, she immediately set to showing them how to forage. The pen hasn't been used in months so is very overgrown - a perfect environment for her to teach them, yet safe as well.

My egg production is down as well and a few hens are in molt. I must admit it is kind of a relief though, not to have as many eggs to deal with every day as I do in the height of the season. Collecting, sorting and packaging dozens of eggs a day does take time.

That's cute about the hen in the brooder HEChicken! You have a much different situation there than I have here. I have so many farm cats here that I couldn't let a hen out with chicks if I wanted to. I have had a few get loose & they're gone in minutes. I just don't have a safe place for a hen to raise chicks. Those little buggers can get through chicken wire like it's nothing.

I'm still working down my list & today have a few more to do things on there to get done. We got the corner post moved in the sheep pen yesterday. My DH pulled the post & we got it moved so that we could have more space to get the wheelbarrow through with hay & such. That pen was there before the fence that we put up to move the sheep to the field so it wasn't exactly perfectly straight. It gave us at least another foot to get through there which will help a lot. I've been working on repairing things that have needed to be done as well. I'm sure I will be glad I have done all of this work this winter as it will make things easier.
