Dr. Mendoza at the Emporia Vet Clinic will see fowl (but he doesn't pretend to be an expert). He would be better than someone who has NO experience, though. I know he sees some 4H show stock on occasion. He told me that he doesn't do internal surgery on chickens, but I don't know about ducks. He will tell you if he doesn't want to treat them. He is NOT an avian specialist, though. You can tell them I sent you (they make their car payments from my pets)

I use Gentle Care Animai Hospital, and I know both Drs. Rausch and Ermeling will see chickens, but I'm unsure about ducks. I don't think there's any reason they wouldn't see them, too, as I know Dr. Rausch has seen turkeys.

I hope all is well!

Sharol, I bet you'll be in good condition before you go. I have to leave for 10 days, too, and my hubby will be doing my chores on top of his 2 jobs. It's hard to leave others in charge, knowing how much work it is and hoping they'll do it to your standards.

I'm too far away, but I really like my vet. They are a group of 3 Dr's and they see everything. I know they see snakes, exotics and birds. But mainly they are a dog and cat vet. But he did a good job with my turkey, and I know he treats little birds- I've seen people bring them in. He knows about the main diseases they get- not sure on how up he is with more complicated stuff, since I've never had to use him in that way.

I'm so lucky that I have a good selection of vets around here. I have 2 vets (clinics) for my horses- one is great for easy stuff and debriding wounds and eye punctures and abrasions. The other one is a surgery center and they can take drastic measures with colic and founder, deep wounds, and other things that come on fast and need immediate care or even surgery. The surgery center is the one I called when my mare got stuck in the bog down by my pond and after it took us 5 hours to get her out (with the fire dept, 6 sheriffs, and animal control, and various other county people--- yes, we made the evening news with that one) he came out and gave her IV's all night and several drugs to keep her out of shock. She barely pulled thru, but with the amazing vet care, she was great! Oh, and the very next day, I ordered two huge loads of LARGE rock to fill in that area, it will never happen again. Now we have mini boulders out by the pond.

I got a lot of work done yesterday on cutting the trusses. Today I need to work on the braces and then getting them put together. Hopefully I will have some pictures to share soon if I make enough good progress worth sharing!

Thanks for all the info. I will call Dr. Mendoza in the morning as I know he is one some of my friends use for their dogs. I think I have the problem figured out. I have a couple ducks with eye problems. Looks like some kind of eye infection. I did some reading and found several references to high heat and dirty water that would cause this. Of course with ducks the water is always dirty even though I change their pans 3 times a day. I think this may have something to do with algae growth which I can't control in the bigger areas.
I appreciate all the references. If one vet can't fix it I will call another. I just wish my own vet who is really great with larger animals had some interest in treating poultry.
I'm going to my youngest granddaughter's 1st birthday party today. Her birthday is actually a week and a half away but they had to schedule when people could attend. My second youngest granddaughter's 2nd birthday is in less than a week. She was born on 09-09-09 about 9:00. I think that is awesome. It's the only one I can remember without having to look it up to confirm.
My oldest daughter also turned 41 yesterday. I can't believe it. That makes me feel very very old. (Of course I was a child bride and had her when I was young. That's my excuse!)
ISN'T THIS COOLER WEATHER AWESOME!!!

Child bride!

Maybe that's better than my diagnosis when I went in to have my kids. I was shocked when I read what the doctor had written:

"ADVANCED MATERNAL AGE"

I didn't think I was THAT old. I'm 56 now and still no grandkids.

This is likely just a pinkeye event- we had a round of it with some of the chicks in one brooder due to them getting it from a kid...imagine that!

There are some easy fixes: Ciprofloxacin or Tobramycin drops for humans, one drop twice daily for 5 days. If you know anyone with toddlers in preschool or kindergarten, they have likely got some in their medicine cabinet. You can use the Vetericyn eye gel from the farm store to treat this, too, or the typical Terramycin eye ointment you can find, again, twice or three times daily for 5 days should fix it.

Good luck! If you can't find the stuff to treat, you might be able to get a vet to prescribe it for you without even charging for an office visit. Conjunctivitis usually looks like the inner membrane is pink and swollen and covering more of the eye than usual.

This is a white foamy covering. It does wash off but the eyes look bleary underneath. And of course it comes back after a few hours. I am sure it is a fungus kind of thing kind of like pink eye. I would much rather just have my vet give me something than haul ducks to the office, especially since the nearest one to treat poultry is 40 miles away.

Also Renee, while I was searching for information there were a ton of comments about how helpful you had been with problems people had. I think it's great that you are willing to help. This eye thing is something new to me.

That's so sweet to say!

I think one of the most important things about this community is the help that folks can provide when they have knowledge, or experience, with something. I always hope I'm helpful.
