I am getting some info about some people from the Madison area, which is in Greenwood Co. that carry the Turpin name. Guess that doesn't help you if you are looking for Johnsons.
One thought on looking for a "place" by that name - it could have been a cattle pen on the old Katy railroad line. The Katy ran N. of Madison to the South. Virgil and Gridley are in Greenwood Co. and might be on the old Katy line. So tracking through that area might give you some clues. Someone I know worked with a turpin in the 60's and could give some possible names for more current times. Let me know if you would like any of this expanded on.
By the way, the "town" I live in was once a thriving cattle railroad town. Complete with schools, motel, etc. Now, only a handfull of houses are here and there is nothing to be bought, not even a can of pop. A ghost town from the cattle, railroad days.
I have NO idea why they were there in the first place in Kansas. Possibly cattle would be my guess because they were farmers here in Illinois. It was such a short time there they would be at in Kansas before they decided to move back to Illinois. Turpin Station is all it was written down for one of the daughter's birth certificate. It might have been a cattle farm or ranch, who knows. However I know that they resided in Greenwood Co for most of the kids being born there. It would be neat to find out for sure! Great Falls is another one that popped up in their birth certificate but did not give location where they were born, just city and county and state.
I know Ashley Johnson was a Civil War calvery soldier for the 2nd MO, Company B and after the war, he went and got married and had 7 kids. He was in KS sometime in 1871-2 which his first son was born, went to IA in 1837 for his son, then went back to KS after 1837 and stayed there until 1885 for his last son born in Green Falls, KS.
So I dont know if there is a land rush going on at that time or something motatived him to go to KS for some reason. However he did come back to IL to stay sometime after 1885 which he died in 1889 here in Illinois. Died of comsumption, as his death certificate said.
Anyone knows why people rush out there around that time?
I know someone that has a hobby of tracing the towns in that part of Ks that have come and gone with time. Some just gone, some have changed names and even location through the years, I will give him this new information on names, people and places. He may already know something,
Search the Katy railroad information as Turpins Station could be a cattle station.
I would imagine the flint hills were a difficult place to live in at that time.
