I"m jealous of those that have the space for more than 20 birds!

We just moved into this house in October, so no more moving for me. Ever. Moving is no fun at all!
At least I CAN have birds here. We were renting before we bought this house, and couldn't have anything in the yard before. I was pushing it by hiding a garden behind the shed.

I don't think we are allowed turkey or quail here in town, I think it's just ducks or chickens and then only 20 total with no roos.

Trish - about the rabbit on the wrong wire. Until you get the wire changed, can you put a board just big enough for her to sit on in to keep her off of the wire? I knew someone that raised big heavy rabbits and that is what they did so the wire wouldn't hurt their feet. They just used scraps of whatever wood was laying around. Just a thought.

Tweety, to be 'farm exempt' and be able to file your income on animals or crops, you must make a certain amount of income from it. I don't remember what that is-- but it's several thousand dollars. Otherwise, selling eggs or birds is simply a 'hobby'. I have a business too-- so I know the difference between hobby and business. I have to file on my LLC each year. My dad is farm exempt. He doesn't do the actual farming himself, but has tenants. But he farms only a little over a couple hundred acres, so it's really small. The rest of his land is rented out for pasture. But it does not get filed like regular taxes-- you have to file it differenly under farm/agriculture. There are different laws for it. Anyway, if you decide to sell eggs or birds, it's nothing you're going to have to worry about... unless you decide to really make a legitimate business of it (not a hobby) and start a business front and get a tax id for it. But even then, you have up to 2 (maybe it's 3 years) to prove that you are making the kind of income that qualifies for it. If not, they will strip it of you.

Well, I think I'm going to throw out the eggs in the incubator today. Going to do a last check on every single one and make sure they all look clear. Otherwise, looks like I'll be starting over again. I sure hope the eggs I'll be collecting are fertile! This was such a disappointment!!

20 is really quite a good number - more than I've heard of from most municipalities. Here in Wichita, we are allowed only 5 without a permit. We can get a permit (pay an annual fee) to keep up to 12, but that is the most you can legally keep inside city limits. And that is also hens only. We can keep ducks (not sure about guineas or turkeys) but in addition to the total number of animals, there is a limit to the number of species you can keep. I think you can't have more than 3 species of animal period. So for example, if I have a dog, a cat and a couple of chickens, I can't also get ducks because that would take me over the limit on species.

Hawkeye - the two eggs you posted pics of do look clear, not growing. The one looks like it MIGHT have a blood ring in it, You said two were so dark you could not see in them. That could be chicks growing. It is at that stage that I have a hard time seeing any movement from the chick. They grow and fill the egg and therefore it is hard to see into the egg. Unless you are talking about dark shelled eggs that are always hard to see into, or if the dark inside was always big and did not grow with time,

Maybe post a pic of the "dark eggs" before you toss them?

They are dark shelled-- but I can't seem to see much into them. I'll post pictures of those two before I decide what to do with them. :) I doubt there are chicks in them.. just because it would be unlikely since all the others don't. But I'd keep them if they did!

You may need a stronger flashlight. I picked up a little LED flashlight at one of the office supply stores (maybe OfficeMax?) for only a couple of bucks, that works great. Even when I incubated Marans eggs, I was able to see into them no problem. What I do is take the eggs into my bathroom, since it is an internal room with no windows so is pitch black when the lights are out. Then I make an 'O' with my thumb and forefinger and put the egg into the 'O', pointy end down. I then take the LED flashlight and place it on the big end (air cell end) of the egg, so that it is basically sitting ON the egg, although I'm supporting it with my hand. The end of the flashlight is only about 1" across, so it has contact with the egg all the way around. With this method, I was able to see quite well into my Marans eggs.

Okay-- my dark eggs are clear too. I tossed every one of them. Le Sigh. I'm going to start collecting today from the girls. Even if they are blanks, I want to give it a shot and see! :) I can't stand waiting around! LOL

I guess I'm going to go get a small LED. I have trouble seeing through some of my quail eggs, and this sounds like just the thing!

Have a good day, and c u around.

I have a very nice one from Lowes. It's a little LED "torch" and I paid $30 for it. It's MUCH brighter than my other flashlights. Totally worth it. I did wrap tape around the end so I could set the eggs into it so they rest on the lens. I think my issue was having a dark enough room. :)
