Consolidated Kansas

Hawkeye those look pretty clear. Knowing myself I'd give it a few more days to be sure unless you need the incubator space. This vet charged $28 for less than half a bottle of Batril. No bargains there for sure. I just gave the roo .5 cc. That was the easiest shot I've ever given. Wow! I was surprised that I didn't have more resistance from the feathers. If he dies tonight I will be convinced I killed him. I just can't find a vet around here that knows anything about treating chickens. At least this one had some batril and my normal vet didn't. I had to laugh. He was very concerned I was going to be eating him or his eggs. Not gonna happen! I had to convince him that this roo was here just for breeding and nothing else. How many days did your vet recommend you vaccinate. The website I found said to do it for 3 days. I was thinking you did it for 5. Just want to be sure.

I did 5 days-- that is what my vet said to do. :)

Danz-I HOPE your vet realized you would NOT be eating any eggs from that rooster!

Ivy I had the same thought. I told him this was a rooster BEFORE he asked if I would be eating any eggs. What do you think he wasn't listening real close. This isn't my normal vet but he did have the meds I needed. Did you notie th enote I left your earlier about giving your name and Rosie's name to a gal (Sara) about buying chickens from you?

Danz - Do you go to the vet clinic on the west side of Emporia on Anderson St? There is (or was) a vet there that worked with the geese at the zoo. When I had a situation with my geese I talked to him and we figured out what the problem was and he told me what I could use. It was mold from the wet spring and the geese would get under the old grass to get to the new and it was moldy under there. Got it stopped before I lost a bunch. He probably knows more about chickens than anyone I am aware of. They also sometimes have K state interns there.

Sorry Loralee - those eggs do look pretty clear - nothing developing in them

. Hopefully Zorro's bath will have helped him to get the job done and you'll be able to try again in a few weeks.

Danz-Yes, I got your message. Thank you very much. I am still waiting to hear from her. Maybe Checoukan has, I'm not sure. I've been gone most of the day and it's been kind of a crazy week. I'm meeting with someone tomorrow that wants some chicks (hopefully!)

I just took some more out of the incubator. Several wheaten ameraucanas. They seem to be doing well. I put a few more eggs into lockdown. One of the eggs I had candled looked really weird. It looked like it was mostly developed, but perhaps had stopped. It had an air sac on the big end, and then it was like it had another air sac on the side adjacent to the other. Weird. I had never candled one like that before. It did not look normal or viable so I didn't put it in the hatcher. Frankly I would rather throw away an egg than a chick that won't survive once it hatches.

I had another escapee in my hatcher. A little wheaten managed to push up out of the tray and ended up under the hatching tray. I'm going to have to figure out a little different lid for my trays. The one I have is so lightweight they can push it up if they get rowdy.

I'm still not getting the hatch percentage I would like, but at least I have had good luck with the chicks that have hatched. I've had only one or two chicks that had a minor pasty butt, and that has been all. I hope it stays that way.

What a fun evening of filing taxes.. LOL

Just curious about those that sell chicks and eggs, do you file taxes on them, if so, do you get tax write-off for the equipment, feed, etc for the birds at all? No - I'm not the IRS or tax man, just curious. I won't report ya if you don't. giggle

I keep track of what comes in, and what it costs, and what goes out and its price, minus a few cash transactions for eating eggs I forget about.
I just keep little doller store notebooks for each species (ex. khaki, peking, turkey). If the amount changes me on taxes (which its unfortunately never been high enough to do) Id report it.

At the least, its a good record of where all my funny money goes. The view in the backyard!

Emporia Vet Clinic. The guy there (I can go get his name if you need) once removed a wing off a silkie of mine that got it mangled by a dog. He was awesome. They are our regular vets now, he is very open to fowl.
