Consolidated Kansas

Well, I didn't get anything done that I said I would. LOL. It did get the materials for the trellis, but that's about as far as I got. It was absolutely crazy in town today. KU won against Missouri, and while I'm not a huge sports fan it was hard to not get wrapped up in it. Traffic in town was horrible and I was shocked at how many stores were playing the game over the speakers. People were just standing in aisles listening, and I'm like "move your darn cart.. I'm trying to shop here". LOL Grocery shopping took me over 2 hours in just one store it was ridicilous.

I did get to go to my step-son's house today and see his chickens for the first time! His mom and step dad are out of town so he asked if I wanted to come over and help him herd them into the coop. He knows how much I love chickens and it was cool that he thought of me knowing it would be awkward if his mom were there. Anyways, he has a BR, RIR, two easter eggers, two silkies and one of the biggest roosters I've ever seen. The RIR, BR, and one of the silkies were super friendly and let me hold them. You have no idea how exciting that is for someone that hasn't ever held a chicken before! We fed them and put them into the roost. Funny thing is, my hubby went with me - and now he wants silkies too! LOL. He couldn't get over how adorable they were. I told him that we'd either need to get them when we get the other new chicks or wait a year. He was right there holding them and petting them all with me! I also got to grab a couple eggs that had been laid during the day and ate my first ever fresh from the nest eggs. Fried them up and OMG were they good! I can finally see what everyone is talking about! This has gotten me so very very excited about getting my chicks in a little over a week!!

Hawkeye - Sorry the windows aren't turning out to be what you expected. Such a bummer! Coop is looking great though!!

HEChicken - My daughter is obessed with carhart jackets. She owns 5 of them (that i know of). I have one and yes, they are just about the best jackets out there. I'd love to get a full suit, but I'm a shorty and I'd have to seriously alter it to get the stock sizes to fit. 5'0' is a hard size to buy pants for. LOL

and on and on...

Sold some more chicks today. Thank you BamaProud!

Danz-I am so excited to see my puppy. Monday work for you?

Hawkeye-Your little coop is looking great. You are a talented girl. On the AI thing. Really, the spoon works well. I had an older gentleman show me how and he has bred bantam cochins for years, and you can't get those flufffy bottoms fertile without AI or some major feather plucking. With the pipettes it's actually harder to "suck it up" than it is to just scoop it up with one sweep of the spoon, set that roo aside pick up your hen and just wipe that whole spoonfull right on the vent and the vent just sucks it right up. Interesting system they have there. Kind of

. Checoukan and I call it "flippin chickens" because you flip that rooster's rear up and "scoop it up." You can go so far as warming your spoon up to body temp before using it by sticking it in your bra while you work with your roo. My mentor suggested putting the spoon in your mouth to warm it up, but the associations I got with that thought have never allowed me to try that!

Hello Consolidated Kansas from El Dorado ! I'm a chicken newbie but a lifelong animal lover and rescuer. I will be at the Yates Auction tomorrow and would love to pick anyone's brains about starting my flock. Especially concerning things to have on hand that might not be obvious (meds, instruments, etc . . .) I know this is a late post, but I'm kind of a dracula. Anway call or text me at 316-807-5625. You will find me near the birds or the Llamas. Thank You!

Marc. I rote your number down yesterday morning and left it laying on the table. I intended to call you at Yates Center. It wasn't much of a sale. They probably didn't have a tenth as much as they normally do.

Chickies, duckies, I saw that newscast. I wondered how he would get it moved if he sold it on Ebay.
Well the Yates Center sale was a bit of a let down. I really was disappointed in their selection. I'm paying for it this morning. My joints are throbbing today. Too much cool air I guess. At least I got a pup delivered to Candace and spent a great day with Trish. I so felt for her driving that far, doing without sleep, and then not really finding what she was after. The selection just wasn't that great. I was pretty disappointed that people didn't mark their cages well so you had no idea how old a bird was or in some cases even what it was. They were pretty poor about that in the auction itself this time. Usually you just want them to get on with selling and quit telling stories. I really was very tempted to buy a pregnant mini mare but DH would have killed me when I got home.He was pretty tiffed at me anyway for ruining his day.
I need to get around and get ready for church. TTYL

Well Hawkeye your coop is looking good, looks like you're getting closed to finished with it before too long.

It looks like it was kind of quiet here today with everybody at the Yates Center sale. It's been a long day for me, I'm not used to getting up at 6 a.m. & I had 4 hours of driving today too. It was a fun day & interesting. I guess there weren't as many animals as there might be later in the year, but we did see some interesting things today such as Yaks & Zebus, lots of mini horses, mini donkeys, llamas, & a muntjac to name a few. There were some gorgeous pheasants & peacocks there today, very tempting. Congrats Candace on getting those beautiful pheasants for your hubby's birthday! I came home with a blue Mini Rex buck, not exactly the color I went looking for, but he is a pretty boy anyway. Oh Danz, I figured out what my little hen is, she's a golden penciled hamburg. She sure does make a funny sound, not like any chicken I have ever heard before. She is a pretty little girl, she just caught my eye & I decided I had to have her. I really didn't go there intending to bring home any chickens at all, but at least it was just one so that's pretty good. I'm about to crash now, so I think I'll see you all tomorrow.
Well, glad you were able to resist the other animals. LOL! Sounds like you had a great time and got some beautiful animals! :)

Sometimes the day just gets away from you-- sorry you didn't get your trellis worked. We built a more "frank loyd wright" one-- it's squares instead of diamonds. It's so sturdy, I can climb on it. ;) That is great that you got your first taste of fresh eggs and got to hold the chickens. Sounds like a lot of fun! I talked to my DH about my windows-- he says we'll just replace the rotten parts and he has the tools to rabbit it. Sigh.

Thanks! I hope to get more done on it today! I'll be checking these eggs today or tomorrow... then I'll be resorting to the spoon if they are clear. I WANT me some babies!!!!!! Yeah, I don't think I could put the spoon in my mouth ahead of time either. Does it HAVE to be warm? I wonder if it will be fine if I just stick it in my pocket. Darned fluffy butt chickens! Can't wait to see which puppy you picked out!! SO exciting!!

Danz, sorry about the lack of selection. I'm sure people just didn't want to get out when the weather was ify (cold). So, a mini mare that was in foal?? I bet she was cute. Although they often have a tough time of foaling and need a lot of help or vet care afterwards. I've only had ONE good experience with foaling and my mare did a great job--she'd done it once before and it was fine also. My other mare unfortunately, foaled, lost the baby and then ended up having complications and got really sick. We thought we were going to lose her. She got an infection, foundered, and then went off her feed and water entirely for days. Ended up having to take very invasive methods to keep her alive. Anyway-- not so sure I'd do that again! LOL Although, we now have an awesome equine surgery center here now. That wasn't there back when we were doing this. I'd probably have an ultrasound done the next time around to be sure everything was looking right and do better prenatal care. We supplemented with extra calcium (ProManna), before, during and after, but know I know they need a lot more than that.

But it IS fun!! When you get a healthy foal. I was in HS for our last one, and he ended up being my baby. I drug him everywhere with me. I had him in the kitchen of my parents house until they caught me and threw us out. I used to haul him to all my shows and trail rides. He turned out to be incredibly laid back-- probably because of all the "torture". hehe! He was broke with Parelli-- that was back when Parelli HIMSELF did the clinics down here!! I went once a week to our Parelli meetings and then once a month we'd have a clinic and every now and then Parelli would come out. Back when we first got married, I would buy really cheap green horses or unbroke 2 yr olds and train them and sell them a year later for profit. They all turned out awesome. The last one I did nearly broke ME. He was so stubborn, but a year later he was still showing some fiesty traits I was worried and posted him for an experienced rider. I sold him to a guy who intended on using him for his 6yr old boy. I warned him, and said I'd take him back if they had troubles. They called me a couple months later and said that horse was absolutely perfect. I use the John Lyons bits and mouth theories for keeping light mouths-- but otherwise, all Parelli. Ah good memories... boy I can really go on and on about that! Sorry!

Chickies-- WHOA-- that is an amazing town, but how the heck would you move it?!? And $20K.... REALLY!?!?!? WOW!
