Consolidated Kansas

Danz, I was so exhausted last night I couldn't even wait for my DH to go to bed, he was disgusted with me, but I couldn't help it. I slept until 11 today I was so tired from yesterday. I have things to do today too, I have to go to Ark City to pick up rabbit hutches I bought from my friend. I'm really not looking forward to unloading them here when we get back, they're 3 holes, so they're pretty long. DH said maybe next time he can go with me to the sale up there, hmmmm.

Wow, that western town is quite the thing, I can't believe someone would pay so much for something like that, but I'm sure someone will.

Yeah I agree Candace I got there at about 9:20 & a lot was already sold before I got there. I guess you have to get up before dawn to get there early enough for the really good stuff. The guy I bought the Mini Rex rabbit from had gotten some pretty wood ducks, but he was probably there very early since he was selling things.

*lol, I wanted to sleep in, but the BC's said the alarm didn't go off so we're here to wake you up! Then 4 of them umped in the middle of us at 7:15! Worse than 2 legged kids I think!

Yeah, we got there a little after 9 too, unloaded then went over the the small animal area, I do think I'll be getting there lots earlier next time! (as if I need more!) It was pretty kewl. Did anyone see how much those swans went for? Not that I wanted them, but I know they can be pretty pricey!

I haven't done anything yet today. I just can't seem to get the energy to move. Long day, but it was great to spend time talking to Candace and Trish. Yeah Candace has one of the pups, Ivy.
I have another buyer who I'm having trouble getting hold of. I sure don't need anyone else backing out.
Those Wood ducks were pretty but they were older. I imagine that is why they were being sold. And since they were moved this time of year they won't lay, so he'll have to keep them an entire year before they lay eggs. Some of these pretty and exotic birds are pretty stinky about having their habitat changed.
Those peacocks were beautiful so now I'm more anxious than ever to get mine. Need to get my buildings and pens done.
I just got ready to order antigen for NPIP testing. A bottle now is over double what it was, partly because of ridiculous shipping charges. It has to be kept cold and arrive within 48 hours. One lousy little bottle is going to cost me about $180. Ouch! I was figuring about $90 because that was the cost the last time I looked.
$60 some dollars of that is shipping. I'm beginning to think testing for other people no longer is going to be financially feasible. With the cost of the papers and the cost of the serum that really hurts.

Oh Danz, I figured out what my little hen is, she's a golden penciled hamburg. She sure does make a funny sound, not like any chicken I have ever heard before. She is a pretty little girl, she just caught my eye & I decided I had to have her. I really didn't go there intending to bring home any chickens at all, but at least it was just one so that's pretty good. I'm about to crash now, so I think I'll see you all tomorrow.

Trish, Look up Russian Orloff. I am pretty sure that is what she is rather than a hamburg. Beautiful bird!

I hate to tell you that you're wrong... but you're wrong! LOL He has a respiratory infection. The yawning and head scratching-- often accompanied with a head shake at the end-- that is respiratory. You need to get him VetRX and antibiotics asap. They don't always have anything coming out of their nose. I doubt the eye problem is an injury, either. It really sounds like he has an infection.

Yeah, I have them (the peacock and hen) separate, I'll read up on that, but I don't think it's a cold after watching him when I went to snap his pic, or respiratory, I've had birds where they have a repository before, congested and stuff, this is different. Anyway, when I was out there, I do think it's he hit his head on a piece of wire or something on the cage, it's like an abscess, he kept scratching it and mashed a little puss out of it...That's when I was thinking definitely abscess, the yawning is like he's trying to stretch it, if that describes it right, he'll yawn then scratch it...But there is nothing coming out his nose; but he is pushing some puss out when he scratches it and when he pushes against a wall.

Danz, no I looked at the Russian Orloffs & that definitely is not what she is. She looks more like the golden penciled hamburg. She sure is a calm little thing, I have her in a plastic crate right now to isolate her in case she picked up something at that sale & she just looks at me when I look in on her. She is a pretty girl though, I just couldn't seem to leave her there. I sure do wish people would identify the birds & animals in cages at that sale, it would be nice to know exactly what you're looking at. To me it is a no-brainer, but I guess not to a lot of people because I saw a lot of cages that only said hen or rooster or whatever.

I agree Candace it does sound like the symptoms Hawkeye had with her chickens. I would be proactive with it before it spreads to your other birds or you lose that one.

Yeah, lol, I said I'd start the Vet RX, never said it wasn't respiratory, just I said I didn't think, with the antibiotics, I forgot what I picked up for that other rooster, but I hadn't had to use it, just the Vet RX last night, he was already acting like he was feeling better last night before I used it the Vet RX, but used it anyway, he looked lots better this morning.

The antibiotic I got was a water soluble, but I don't remember what it was, I got it at Bluestem, just give him some of that? Should I go ahead and treat the peahen also? I'm not concerned with it spreading but to those two, but that's why I was asking, I've never seen respiratory or anything present like this, but I wanted to ask to be sure, I never say I know everything about everything, but I do question!

That's how we all learn. Should I treat them all? I mean they all were at the sale (the pheasants also)? If so, are pheasants treated the same?

Trish, post a pic of that lil hen. Did you pick one up too? I'll look at it, I have silver penciled, like the ones I showed you yesterday, only difference in the gold and silver, is the color, the two hens I have don't sound like the other hens, and have funny sounds.

Candace, I would treat the two that are in together if you're putting the med in the water. I would just keep an eye on the pheasants for now & watch for any signs of anything. I don't know anything about pheasants at all, so if they develop anything you should ask someone who has them.

I will post a pic when I get a chance, but it will probably be tomorrow, lots going on today, in fact need to get off here & get to it. Yes, that sounds like you have the same kind as this hen, she definitely makes a different sound than any of my other chickens, its unique.

Candace don't give the birds antibiotics if they aren't sick. In fact if you can cure with just using vetRC that is better. Unfortunately it looks like the peafowl needs the antibiotics. You know, Trish, it's been close to 24 hours and as tired as I was she could have been a purple chicken for all I'd know.
I have got to get my butt in gear. I am wasting time and better weather.
