Consolidated Kansas

Every once in a while my girls throw some straw out of one of the nest boxes. It always seems to be the same box, so it might be the same girl. They seem to have their favorite boxes and they'll perch and glare (yes, chickens can glare!) at the one in their favorite box until the other girl either gets out, gets finished or she herself gets distracted or decides to pace a while. Mine don't like very much straw in the nest, so what looks cozy to me isn't so much for them. Go figure!

My Black Australorp pullet turned out to be a big beautiful roo. Hubby suspected it long before I mentioned it. The smarty pants! But he grew upon the farm, I didn't. Now I have a partridge cochin roo to find a home for. Two roos in my hen house wouldn't work during the confining cold months. Thinning my flock I also need to sell 5-6 of my youngest pullets. RIR's and NHR if you know of anyone interested.

Anyone know where to find DE in Wichita? West side would be great. I guess I need to get some to help with the fleas that my dog keeps bringing in... hoping that it will help - and not harm the chickens either...

I hate to spend a fortune shipping it!

Day 20 and I have baby ducks pecking and cheeping through the shell. Mama White rock is so proud she flufs at the sight of me. I should leave her alone but I cant help myself; I have to check in on progress. Counting chicks before they hatch and all else I expect suckling duck for Christmas. Yeah but I said that with their parents at easter and didnt eat one. However I have outsourced the killer in trade for one of his own to eat. Well I am at least that planning this late fall hatch will pay off.

We live in Admire. I just called all the farm supply stores in Topeka until I found one with a person whe knew what I was talking about. If the person whom I asked, said, "Huh?" when I mentioned DE, I told them diatomaceous earth, if that was also met with non-recognition, I moved on to the next store.

Just be sure to specify "food grade" the other stuff is too coarse.

Let me know if you have not found any by Saturday as I plan on going to the swap meet at Premier farm and Home in Topeka. It was mentioned a few pages back that they carry it and I can bring some back with me if you like (free shipping). Just let me know before I leave.

Well my suspect (pullet turned roo) decided to try crowing at 6AM this morning. So he is sleeping in the garage tonight to keep the neighbors from hearing him tomorrow. Put an ad on C asking $5 but I'll take less for a good home. He has to go!
