Consolidated Kansas

So, DH went to the TSC to check out the Carharts on sale and came home with an unexpected surprise:
(needless to say, I had to rush around and create a new brooder... I call it Ducken Math.. LOL (or would it be Chicuck Math?)

Meet Quackers and Ducky

LOL - and the fun begins. And you even updated your signature already!!!! Although it looks like they're not due to hatch for another 3 weeks yet

ROFL! Good catch! I fixed it. Guess I was too excited and wanted to share :) We are letting them sleep for a bit and getting warmed up before we go stare again for a while. LOL

Now that is a good man!

My father keeps threatening me with ducks if I bring some chicks and a coop over to my their house. My mom grew up on a farm and really misses this aspect of farm life. I may just do it! The kids would go crazy with ducks!

In other news took the 7 year old DD to the Dr today only to find out she has an ear infection and pneumonia! Sigh! Her 4 year old brother goes in tomorrow and may be diagnosed with the same thing. This is why I will have a full head of gray hair by 40!

Cute! I wish my husband would bring me home some ducks or chicks! Then he really would be the perfect man!!

Quackers and Ducky are so darn cute!

Weren't your chicks shipped today? So excited for you.

Yes, they were shipped today! I'm going to be anxiously awaiting the call tomorrow or Wed! It'll be nice to raise them all together (different brooder), but we'll let them run and play outside when it's nice out there, then move them into the coop at the same time in a month or so.

Awww, tweety, cute ducks, what a nice hubby! I wish I was closer to a TSC, but it's about 40 miles to one for me. I do like buying my feed from there better than Orschelyn's, but I have to get it where I can most of the time. If we happen to go to Wchita for something & I have time we try to run by there once in awhile to pick up feed. Their bags are 50 lbs. versus 40 lbs. at Orschelyn's for close to the same price. I was surprised that the CO-OP in Ark City just has pellets from Purina & they're $2 more a bag than at Orschelyn's. Their own mix of feed is the granules & I just think you waste more feed with those, so do you really come out ahead? My hens are used to the pellets too, they like them. Of course I think they would eat anything I put down, they're pigs. Oh & tweety, pics when your chicks get there, we want to see!

My little hen seems to be getting better each day, so hopefully in a couple days I can put her in another cage & start introducing her to the other chickens. I will still keep her out in the run, but they will be able to see her at least & get used to her & she to them. She makes this strange noise when she hears the rooster crow outside. It's almost like a wild sort of sound rather than a chicken sound.

DH took off work today & spent the day putting up the garage door opener, he just now finished up. I'm proud of him, he did a really good job getting it put up. It's a different type than the one we had, so he had to take down the old one completely & start fresh. This new one sure is quiet compared to the old one & so smooth. Technology sure changes in a short time, new things all the time.

KarenS, congrats on the new incubator, I'll bet you'll have fun with that. I can't wait to see your Aloha chicks you come up with. I wish I could have joined you this year, but I just have too much going on this year. Maybe next year. I have to get my breeds separated so I can hatch pure breds first. Oh, by the way, my Ameraucana laid an egg today, one of them did anyway. Then when I went to go retrieve it, they had laid it in the doghouse & the rooster was in there & freaked when I tried to get it & the egg got cracked.

. Hopefully they will get to laying now. I put a new nest box in their run, so maybe they'll like it better, I hope anyway. I had a gal call me today wanting chicks again.

Trish-I'm glad your ameraucanas are starting to lay. It seems like mine lay in spurts. The best layers have been the wheatens. They crank 'em out pretty regular. The latest to start have been my silvers. I think I've only had one or two eggs out of that pen.

Tweety-Cute duckies! What a sweet surprise. Yes, a cardboard box always works for an emergency brooder.

Pikeman-Sure hope your kids get better quickly. That doesn't sound like fun at all. Good thing you got your daughter in to the Dr.

I just came in from the barn. I made some modifications on the upper deck of my bantam pens. They kept kicking all the shavings out so I put linoleum in there that folds up the front. When I clean it out all I have to do is bend the linoleum down and sweep it out. It worked great on the lower deck, so I put some up top, too. I think it will be a lot nicer for the birds to be able to have deeper clippings in there. I had to move the birds around while I was doing all this. I tell ya, I just love my old english and my rosecombs. They are so sweet, calm and gentle. I would HIGHLY recommend them for anyone who has kids that are going to be starting with chickens in 4-H or FFA.

Mike and I moved the new incubator into the basement today but I still have to clean the whole thing out before I fire it up. It was running well when we picked it up so I'm not worried about it not working correctly.

pikeman94 -- sorry to hear about your children's illnesses. I took 4 of my 8 to the Dr. Friday and everyone is better today. Our family Dr. calls my family his retirement plan.

Hope yours are well soon.

trish44 -- sorry about your Ameraucana egg -- silly Rooster. Tazcat & I are sharing Aloha eggs being delivered from Arizona this saturday. By next year we should have some really great eggs, chicks or birds to share with you!

Tweety -- can't wait to see pics!

The kids and I fed the chicks from our hands this evening for the first time. It was a hoot! They came near at first but wouldn't take the treats. Finally, one chick got brave, snatched a treat and ran. The others dived in. It was a chick riot!

I saw a couple chicks with really, really full crops and managed to touch them while feeding the treats and they seemed pretty hard. I'm going to check in the morning to be sure their crops have shrunk back to a more normal size. They really went crazy for the sand -- hope they haven't sandbagged themselves! Has anyone ever had a chick eat too much sand? They have feed 24/7 so I can't imagine why they would prefer sand and maybe I'm worrying for nothing. Oh well, wait and see.

Thanks! We actually put them into one of the dog kennels that we have, I just put up some cardboard to keep the shavings inside :) Posted a pic below I hear that they make a much bigger mess than chickens.
Do all ducklings lay down while they drink? They are so cute. I've been watching them for hours and they'll hop back and forth between the feeder and the waterer and between walking back and forth - plop down to eat and drink. They are loving the clipping of wheat grass. I don't think TSC fed them greens at all.
Also, another question that I can't find the answer to - do they respond to dawn/dusk like chickens? Here at 9 pm they are going full speed ahead with the playing and eating and pooping. LOL
